she's glad she beat the sunset; even if there's no way she could make it back to fallarbor town before dark by now.

perhaps it was a latent type of agoraphobia, borne of being raised under sootopolis' neatly enclosed rim.

here the sky felt too large, oppressive. seeing the edge of the horizon in the distance is enough to make her throat close up, and pressing her spine against a rock face felt safest.

maybe she just won't sleep that night.

persephone thinks she's imagining the sandstorm - a callback to slateport, to things she thought better buried in the debris and dust. she drops her head to her knees and waits for the stinging against her skin to pass, but it never does.

when she releases the lucario, she's almost pleading. "find it, please, get rid of it."

she drops her head again, partly to defend against the sandstorm itself, partly to defend herself from the memories it evoked.

the sandstorm stops as suddenly as it started; particles falling directly from the air to the ground. her pokemon is back shortly, and persephone feels him soothe her before she hears or sees him return.

the silhouette of a pokemon rising from the shadows is enough to make persephone withdraw further against the wall. first the sandstorm, his pokemon.

the shape is too familiar and she can't bring herself to look at it.

lucario is wordlessly dispatched to deal with it.

what remains of the krookodile's sandstorm passes with an unnatural speed, as if swept aside by an invisible hand. her lucario hasn't returned yet, and persephone tenses up again, pre-empting another assault (physical, on her mind, it doesn't matter) but too frozen and unthinking to reach for another pokeball.

the pokemon - its long and slender serpentine form - emerges from nothingness, pausing to contemplate her with a long, placid stare. she lays down a safeguard around her as though it is a peace offering. when the lucario returns, he regards the dragonair warily, dipping his head gratefully after a moment.

the night bleeds into early morning, and somehow, the dragonair leaves with them as if by her own volition.
