slateport smoulders.

dominic can taste its death, acrid on his tongue. smoke plumes into the sky not unlike the coils from his houndoom's blood-flecked maw. the pokemon paces at his feet, still tense with adrenaline. dominic occupied himself with reading the updates on his phone, sporadic as they are due no doubt to the ongoing power-outage.

someone's failure. not his.

it's enough for him to hear the footsteps to identify the man. dominic jerks his head back to look at the silas, scrutinising him through narrowed eyes.

"the power is still out."

a simple statement that they're both aware of.

the inhabitants of slateport flee like rattatas deserting a sinking ship, but there are some who choose to stay only to be flushed out like pests. he doesn't offer them the luxury of fleeing. he makes them dread their decision.

screams are muffled and lost in the emptiness of the city.

when he nears the outskirts, he's greeted by a familiar face. "no shit." simple statements don't need to be said: he's not an idiot.

rhyperior joins houndoom.

"you should have been there. but you weren't."

"no shit," he repeats. a second passes before he continues, he voice dripping with a mockery that he couldn't pass up but won't push any further.

mockery is met with venom because he will not be disrespected. especially not by an underboss regardless of what dynamic their relationship holds outside of rocket.

dominic is vicious but he's also foolish. lapdogs must be trained. "you tell me." sizing up the underboss, he crosses his arms over his chest.

he wouldn't be doing his duty if he left his superior unchecked, hierarchy is a system of checks and balances. for now, dominic bites his tongue. no doubt silas was on edge, even if the invasion was by all current accounts a success.

the lapdog knows his place: knows when to hold his tongue because the alternative would be noxious. perhaps even deadly. and while it's difficult to measure hypotheticals, the underboss should have at least made an effort to.

"it's difficult to measure your worth, too."

two pokemon make their entrances: the flashy rainbow one catches his attention. it's an interesting enough pokemon that he decides not to take its life; instead, he'll own it.

it only has one type disadvantage; he'll exploit it immediately. rhyperior stomps forward with tremble in his step that causes the EARTH to QUAKE. the ground splits only underneath the alolan muk; sharp edges pierce into its skin as the impact sends it backwards.

it's stronger than it looks because it manages to survive the hit. silas might even be considered impressed. he throws a pokeball at it.

he doesn't respond, doesn't take the words to heart because they're meaningless posturing intended to intimidate him. he knows as much, he's seen it before.

regardless, dominic doesn't flinch back even though he knows what silas is capable of; his prior actions in kanto, every moment leading up to this one, are all in combination a testament to his worth and questioning it is naught but an empty threat.

dominic raises a shoulder in a languid shrug at his words, but his answer is interrupted by his superior's capture of the pokemon. dominic watches with little interest until movement at the wayside attracts his attention. the houndoom lurches forward, flames licking at his paws as they strike the ground.

he grabs the pokemon in his jaw with the crushing force of a crunch, head inclined slightly to read his trainer's response; live or die. dominic flicks his hand dismissively, and the swalot's fate is decided as an inferno catches it in its blaze.

the result? a purple puddle on the ground.

"i'm sorry you feel that way, silas. ezra and i are the best you have." unfortunately.

the houndoom side-steps the melted remains of the swalot, giving a thorough shake of his boy to get rid of any droplets that may have remained on his sleek, black fur.

he was trotting back to his trainer when a sound in the rubble forces him to halt in his tracks, swiveling his head side-ways as if to ask permission to investigate. dominic grants it with a dip of his head, and the pokemon springs into action once more, quick to locate the pokemon with an odor sleuth, and even quicker to pull him out, clenched in the crunch of his jaw.

dominic tosses a pokeball because he always did have a soft-spot for that species. what a lucky encounter.

silas hasn't moved, and dominic wonders if the man is aware of the amoonguss eyeing him, specifically, from a few meters away. he doesn't bother to point it out lest he receive another rebuke. the second the pawniard disappears into its new capsule, a flick of dominic's hand sends the houndoom galloping at the mushroom pokemon, spitting a flamethrower.

the pokemon won't die because the option of it being a tribute to silas is available, but it will be incapacitated.

he sees the mushroom pokemon long before dominic does but he doesn't make a move because he doesn't have to waste his energy on such menial tasks. that's why he has underlings. that's why he has dominic sinclair.

FLAMETHROWER licks away, burning as it makes the mushroom pokemon regret ever existing. but a pokemon that can take that level of pain and not die is something else. in these days it's rare.

he doesn't have to order because it's a tribute to him. an offering. and like the benevolent god he accepts it. he tosses a pokeball at the mushroom pokemon.

he is still not appeased.

silas doesn't wait for his lapdog this time even though it's been thirty-six hours and one solo wild post because any thread with noodles comes last.

all will know his might; rhyperior cracks the ground with a piercing STONE EDGE that smacks dead against bulbasaur's tanky body. the impact sends it flying upwards, spiraling in the air as its VINE WHIPS look to stabilize it in a fashion that's almost similar to a helicopter. it's amusing.

but it only lands to another STONE EDGE that pins it against the ground. silas tosses a pokeball.
