"A whole transfer huh...?" Dallas whispered to himself as he pulled up his raincoat in the downpour. The rain was coming down hard, as was the norm in this part of the continent, at least from what Dallas had read in the brochure. His boots were soaked throughout and his socks felt like spongy weights on the bottoms of his feet. He would have to replace them at the next sight of a Pokécentre, or at least a building of any sort. He heard rumors of a weather lab, but he had no sight of it. Continuing to walk uphill he searched for his partner Isla. They both arrived to Hoenn earlier that week by boat, posing as tourists so as not to bring any attention, but it mattered little as it seemed many residents took avoidance of strangers. It seems, Dallas thought, that Team Rocket had already made their presence in the region.
[break]
Peering through the mists stirred up by the torrential rain, Dallas caught sight of a figure in the distance. Letting out a sigh he approached the shadow, knowing the figure of his partner well. "Sorry I took so long! I got caught up in the local flora. I've never seen trees like this before back in Kanto."

  • Travelled to rendevouz point on Route 119 to meet partner Isla

They'd been transferred to Hoenn following the conquest of Kanto and, as if that wasn't bad enough, she thought she'd felt a small raindrop on her bare forearm. She turned her eyes to the sky, suspicious of the clouds that loomed above her. Just her luck, not only had she been sent to the middle of buttfuck nowhere by her superiors but also she was about to find herself caught in a torrential downpour. Welcome to Hoenn, she thought rolling her eyes. As if to say "Enjoy your stay," the rain began pelting down. The feeling's mutual, she sighed through gritted teeth and cast a final glare at the swelling storm before pulling her cloak over her head.[break][break]

It took Isla the greater part of the day to make it to her and Dallas' rendezvous point. The storm hadn't let up and, by now, she shared an uncanny resemblance to a wet litten—she looked miserable at best in her soaked through clothes and ready to lash out against the next person (or pokemon) unlucky enough to cross her path.[break][break]

The shape of a man shifted beyond the mist. Instinctively, she drew her honedge. It apparated from the scabbard around her waist to in front of her, poised inches away from her clenched fist. That's when she heard it—a familiar voice called out to her and Dallas Mc'Rebus—the man, the myth, the legend—stepped out from behind the curtain of rain. She heaved a sigh of relief, her arm falling to her side. Her honedge moved in synchrony with it, disappearing out of thin air only to sheath itself.[break][break]

Tch![break][break]

She shot him a disapproving look before turning on her heel and walking away in the direction of the archaelogical site they'd been tasked with seizing for the glory of Team Rocket or whatever. There was a pause. She waited for him to catch up before admitting, "So, I kind of...didn't pay attention during the debriefing. What's the deal with the rocks and do you know what we're in for when we get there?" What were the odds that Dallas had listened during the meeting, though? Shit. Fuck. Isla hated surprises.

"We're here searching for a deposit of fossils that were unearthed due to the change of seasons." Dallas said as he admired the scenery. "It seems that it has piqued a strong interest in headquarters and they think that they can profit by controlling the fossil trade. Not to mention fossils are rare enough to bring in some cash on their own."
[break]
The thought of fossils always took Dallas back to the first days of when he and Siege, his Bastiodon, had first met. He was always amazed at the technology that brought prehistoric Pokémon back to life. In most circumstances Dallas would take his time with a mission, leaving the tough work until the last minute. However, this particular job sparked a fire in his heart, and Dallas was excited to reach their destination.
[break]
"Speaking of the changing of seasons, we should find a place to rest very soon. The temperature will be getting colder and soon I expect there to be hail instead of rain. I came prepared and brought along some wool cloaks to keep us warm and dry." Dallas pointed to the damp pack he was carrying over his shoulders. The pack was water resistant, but Dallas knew that with enough rain it could become soaked throughout. "There should be a centre just up ahead. We will get changed and make sure our Pokémon are rested and healthy before we go further. From what I understand Team Rocket isn't the only group that has an interest in these fossils and we need to be ready in case of anything." He turned towards Isla and smiled, as if showing that he felt that everything was going to be alright.

  • Discussed mission
  • Made plan for cold temperatures

Dallas appeared to be a wealth of knowledge on the mission at hand. Isla raised an eyebrow at him, shocked. She'd read things about people recalling words they'd heard while sleeping. Were those studies being proven right here, right now? Or had Dallas actually been awake for the mission debrief? Whatever the case, the mission sounded right up their alley: find the site, secure the goods (in this case, fossils), and transport them safely to Team Rocket headquarters in Slateport City. Dallas and her had built quite the reputation for this line of work back in Kanto—acquiring items, people, or pokemon of interest and delivering them to their superiors with few, if any, hiccups.[break][break]

"Just another day at the office," she quipped. For a brief second, her teeth chattered. What was once rain had quickly developed into sleet. Each pellet bounced off her bare skin with a subtle sting that left her itching to take shelter and put on one of the (hopefully) dry cloaks Dallas had packed for them in preparation for the cold.[break][break]

"Alright, let's not waste any time. We can figure out our gameplan when we get to the Pokemon Center." Speak of the Devil—shortly after cresting a small hill, the Pokemon Center faded into view. Isla put a hand on Dallas' shoulder and squeezed. "See you inside," she said before taking off in the direction of the building. The sooner she got out of that brewing snowstorm, the better.[break][break]

Following Dallas' advice, she handed her party—Arcanine, Zorua, Gible, and Honedge—over to the woman at the service desk. A few moments later, they were returned battle-ready with maxed out health and stamina. There was no telling what sort of resistance they'd face but with a refresh they'd be as ready as ever. She found a seat at an empty table in the corner and, with the flick of her wrist, released her Zorua from its pokeball. It yipped and curled up in her lap where she started to braid the fur on its head. When Dallas joined her, they'd discuss their strategy for the potential battle(s) ahead and get changed into warmer gear.[break][break]

"So," she began when Dallas took his seat across from her, keeping her voice low so as to not raise suspicion in the public place, "if we do encounter 'poochyenas', I suggest we don't make a mess." Stealing was bad for publicity but bloodshed was even worse. "I don't know if they'd buy it, but my Zorua could use its abilities to play tricks on their minds and make them flee. I've heard superstition is in right now. If we're lucky, we could avoid fighting altogether. At the very least, it might scare a few of them away so we aren't severely out-numbered. What do you think?"

Dallas was always proud of the wits of his partner. She always had a plan ready regardless of the minimal efforts that Dallas was ready to put in (he liked to tackle things as they came, adapting to situations when needed) and her drive was something to be admired. There was a good reason she was his favorite person to work with, and it was the strong desire to push forward that she exhibited. She reminded Dallas of someone he knew, and that made him feel the need to take on a more maternal role towards Isla. He wanted to keep her and her ambitions safe.
[break]
"You might just have something there kid, reminds of the time you tricked me with the little guy the first time we met." He started to remove his wet raincoat and his boots, his clothing dripping into puddles on the floor. He felt guilty of the mess he was making but he knew that it was just the responsibility of the staff to take care of it (not to mention he was to lazy to make an effort to clean it up). To much of Isla's efforts, Dallas unfortunately was careless and when he began removing his boots and socks many of the other Pokémon Center patrons began to ogle and glare in the direction of their table, the public showing of ones feet almost being taboo. When Dallas noticed this he embarrassingly looked towards Isla to catch her giving him a glare that radiated of annoyance. The Zorua situated upon her lap shook its head and closed it's eyes as Isla continued it's grooming. He was very much proud of his partner, but his partner seemed to feel a bit differently at times.
[break]
Awkwardly laughing he quickly began to switch his socks with dry, clean ones, and replaced his raincoat with a thick Piloswine fur coat, sliding a second one across the table at Isla. Isla took it immediately and began to throw it over her own shoulders as she sniffled. Isla wasn't any more used to the cold weather than Dallas was. Looking around again he noticed the eyes turning back to their respective business, although annoyed. Dallas guessed it couldn't be helped and he'd rather deal with the annoyance now than deal with cold feet and flu later. If anything the two of them looked more like ignorant tourists than suspicious persons.
[break]
"Whatever happens up ahead," he said with a low voice, to maintain the privacy of their conversation, "just remember that we only need to grab what we're looking for and get out as soon as we can. Your Zorua can definitely scare them off when it can, but even reducing the numbers we may be in serious trouble if they are packing heat. We don't know what type of Pokémon they use. Let's make sure we play this safe and stick together." One of the nurses called out Dallas' name and he looked over to see that his Pokémon, which were given to nurse to be nursed back to health, were ready to be retrieved. Dallas stood up and slowly made his way over to the counter. Smiling at the nurse he retrieved his three Pokéballs (two balls that looked scratched and roughed up, and one nicer one decorated with an assortment of Pokémon stickers) and started to place them on his belt as he slowly walked back towards the table. On his way over he glanced sideways at a table that housed three rough looking figures, all wearing dark colored hoodies. One male, and two females were glaring in the direction of Dallas, and shifting their vision towards Isla at the table. Isla and her Zorua were staring back at the table with fierce eyes.
[break]
"This doesn't look good." Dallas said to Isla as he approached the table. "There's something suspic-"
[break]
At that moment the entire Pokémon Center began to shake intensely, with paintings and vases crashing to the floor. Various patrons were knocked over while some took immediate cover, although nobody seemed to understand the circumstance as to why the earthquake was happening. Isla had stood up and her Zorua was crouched in front of her in a ready stance, the two of them glaring towards the table of the three thugs from earlier. Dallas, who had fallen forwards onto the table that Isla and himself were sitting at, turned his head to see that the three hooded figures were now dashing out of the Pokémon Center, completely undisturbed by the current earthquake. Within a minute the earthquake quickly subsided, with everyone at the center still shaken. Dallas looked at Isla and gave her a look of concern.
[break]
"I think this is going to be a bit more than we bargained for."

  • Dallas changed his clothes and gave Isla a fur coat for the weather
  • Accidentally brought attention to themselves in Pokécenter
  • Saw three suspicious figures wearing hoodies
  • Earthquake happened and three figures took off

Though he wasn't much older than she was, Dallas had become her de facto father figure after so many months of being teamed up together. In more ways than one, she had grown to rely on him—he was one of the few people who could hold her back from any rash decisions or unnecessary cruelty and his pokemon have covered her ass in battle more times than she cared to admit. Dallas nurtured a gentleness that stirred inside her. He was the voice in the back of her head telling her to let it go...let them go. But what happens when he isn't there to talk her down? What happens when there's nothing standing between them and her and they won't submit? That's the darkest timeline, isn't it?[break][break]

She snapped out of it and looked up at the room full of people side-eyeing Dallas. Isla might have been lost in her own thoughts but Zorua didn't miss the mention of its past trickery. The small wolf-like pokemon puffed its chest out, its ego inflating twofold.[break][break]

Tch![break][break]

That familiar exasperated sound slipped through her teeth. "It's like they've never seen an ankle before," she said staring them down while Dallas removed his shoes and put on a dry pair of wool socks. Fuck 'bad ettiquette,' she thought, we just spent the last couple of hours walking through someone's broken sprinkler system. "Thanks," she said, throwing the cloak over her shoulders. This would have to do.[break][break]

Dallas wanted to avoid conflict outright. "Yeah, yeah, but where's the fun in that?" She poopooed his idea. He was right—they were called on to retrieve the fossils and then get the hell out of dodge—but she liked to play, too. She continued to braid her zorua's fur and scratch behind its ears. Zorua, naturally skittish in dangerous encounters, was prone to casting abilities that inflicted its opponents with horrible visions that more often than not drove them mad and caused them to flee or whimper at her feet. The sound of someone begging for mercy—no, holding someone's life in her hands got her rocks off. It was then, and only then, that she felt powerful. Indomitable even.[break][break]

Submit.[break][break]
Submit.[break][break]
Submit.[break][break]

Isla caught Dallas' eyes bouncing back and forth between a couple of (for lack of a better term) thugs seated across the room. They looked like a bunch of budget Team Rocket grunts. Were these the Poachyenas they'd been warned about? "Do they know?" she whispered, her hand hovering restlessly over the belt of pokeballs around her waist. Were they tipped off that Team Rocket would be attempting to seize the fossils for themselves, or was that just a given because of Team Rocket's obvious presence in Hoenn? Did they know that Dallas and her worked for them, or did they just look at everybody like that? All kinds of thoughts raced through her mind before the ground beneath their feet started to rumble.[break][break]

"You'd better catch up," she barked at Dallas, her zorua growling at her feet, eyes trained on the three thugs shoving their chairs away from the table and jumping to their feet. Not so fast, she thought as they made their great escape out the Pokemon Center's main doors. With her zorua hot on her heels, she took off in pursuit of the no-good trio. Bits and pieces of the Pokemon Center came falling down all around her, a ceiling tile nearly collapsing on top of her zorua who had rushed ahead. It knew all too well that she didn't want the attackers getting away scot-free, especially if they were trying to sabotage Dallas and her plans and make off with the fossils themselves. Isla stumbled backwards, narrowly avoiding the ceiling tile. Ugh! "Scary Face!" she commanded her Zorua, honing in on the (presumably) Poachyena grunt that took up the rear.[break][break]

Zorua gave out a sharp yip of compliance before taking off after the grunt at the back of the pack that Isla had singled out. Isla caught up to her quick-footed pokemon just in time to see it happen—her favourite part of the show. A devilish face apparated in front of the grunt, its pulsating red eyes hypnotizing to watch. As much as the grunt wanted to, she couldn't look away. As the face's mouth pulled up into a crooked smile akin to the Cheshire cat, hideous laughter rang through the grunt's ears. "No, no, no....Stop! Please! Oh, god...!" the grunt pleaded on her knees, desperately covering her ears in a feeble attempt to release her from her affliction.[break][break]

The other Poachyena grunts looked over their shoulders but didn't stop. Perhaps they had a greater goal? Isla's pace quickened and she reached for a pokeball on her belt. With the deft swing of her arm, arcanine blinked into existence. It stood over the grunt, lips unfurled to reveal teeth that could snap her in half if it had the mind to. She had chased them a good piece away from the Pokemon Center by now and there was no way in hell anyone was nosy enough to get up from under their tables and brave the storm to see her sic her pokemon on a human.[break][break]

"I think you're right about this being more than we signed up for. You could try questioning her but she might still be mad. Just leave her here. We can probably catch up to them if we go now." Isla stood with her back to Dallas and her pokemon, looking hungrily into the distance they'd disappeared into, chest heaving from giving chase to them. She clenched her fist, her body reeling with a mix of adrenaline and disappointment. We can't let them get away, she thought, unable to accept the reality that she'd let them slip through her fingers.

With Isla storming out of the Pokémon Center, Dallas was left alone to react. Grabbing his pack he bolted out after her, leaving the patrons of the center to fend for themselves. Dallas knew his responsibility didn't lie with them, and he was sure they and their Pokémon would be safe on their. Isla, on the other hand, was reckless and prone to getting herself into situations she couldn't handle. Her overconfidence scared Dallas on multiple occasions and he worried this was another one of those times.
[break]
Rushing out into the now chilly air, as hail pelted his face, Dallas followed the footprints that Isla had left behind as well as the footprints of what seemed to be the three hooded figures. He caught himself after almost slipping on the ground of the path, now slowly turning icy from the weather. Dallas noting this in the back of his recovered quickly and continued to run in the path. His boots splashed up water as he stomped through a puddle, soaking his socks and making him groan in frustration. After all of the trouble he went to changing his socks he was back to where he had started.
[break]
"...No! Stop! Please...!!" Dallas caught the tail end of the cry of the hooded woman. She screamed out in agony as her vision was tormented with the illusions created by Isla's Zorua. Dallas stopped a few feet behind Isla, watching her carefully as she continued her ritual. This wasn't a new face to Dallas, and although he sometimes didn't fully agree to it, he knew it was something that Isla needed to do. Over Isla's shoulder Dallas could see the other two grunts running off into the distance. He watched as Isla glared at them and called out her Arcanine. It blazed into existence and immediately tackled the crying grunt to the ground, pushing the fear and torment further. Dallas could see Isla tensing up further, gaining an awful sort of pleasure from the experience.
[break]
"...we can probably catch up to them if we go now." Isla said through her teeth. She was grinning and staring off in the direction of where the other two figures had run off. Like cat and mouse this was now a game of chase, with Isla being the hungry cat that licked its teeth in anticipation. Dallas eyed her carefully, and turning to the direction she was staring he nodded in agreement. They had to make sure that the grunts didn't reach the fossils before they did, not only because it was their mission, but also because Dallas needed the fossils. He had to get them, as they were an important puzzle piece to something that Dallas needed to do. Pulling a Pokéball from his belt he summoned Deona, his Rhydon, and she roared into awakening giving Dallas a nod of approval, already aware of what was to be requested. Although not as quick as Isla's Arcanine, he knew it was best chance at keeping up with the chase, plus, having his Pokémon out and ready for action would have him prepared in case of ambush.
[break]
"Let's get moving, we can-" Dallas hesitated for a moment and looked at the hooded woman. She was frozen from fear, but was beginning to freeze from the weather also. Dallas knew that both him and Isla were outlaws, but they weren't killers. Pulling out a second Pokéball from his belt he called out his Abra, Tien. He crouched next to his Pokémon, "I want you to bring her to the Pokécenter and meet with us afterwards. You'll know where to find me." The Abra's expression remained neutral as it approached the girl, placing its hand on her shoulder. Within the blink of an eye the Abra and the girl had disappeared. Isla had snapped out of her trance a bit as her prey had left the vicinity, although her hunger for more lingered in her eyes.
[break]
"Lead the way." With his word Isla hopped onto the back of her Arcanine, and Dallas grew a little bit jealous of the warmth she probably gained from mounting the fire type Pokémon. He likewise hopped onto the back of his Rhydon, giving her a reassuring pat before taking off behind Isla and her Pokémon, who had already run ahead, the speed of the Arcanine unmatched. Dallas felt a tinge of worry again, but held it back as he trusted his friend to stay safe.

  • Dallas catches up to Isla
  • Sends grunt back to Pokécenter in mercy
  • Summons Rhydon and follows Isla and her Arcanine towards the other two grunts.

They weren't killers.[break][break]

Isla's reputation for paralyzing her opponents with fear and, in extreme cases, trapping them in a state of delirium preceded her. Her ghost- and dark-type pokemon were masterful at crafting nightmare fuel that could make almost any thug who tangled with her run to the hills or get down on their knees. She owed everything to her pokemon. Without them to eat the dreams of her enemies or chase them until their legs gave out beneath them, she would be nothing. Powerless.[break][break]

Still, she wasn't a killer...although, the potential was there. All it would take was the death of one of her party or—she didn't even want to think about it—Dallas and she would go for the throat. Her arcanine stepped off the sniveling grunt and padded over to her, leaving the shaken thug in Dallas' capable, albeit gentle, hands. She kept quiet as he summoned his abra to safely transport the Poachyena member back to the Pokemon Center, staring vacantly into the snowscape ahead while she stroked arcanine's fur. Dallas was a good-hearted man. What was he doing chumming around with someone as volatile as her? Better yet, what was he doing with the likes of Team Rocket? Maybe these were all questions she should ask him.[break][break]

She looked back over her shoulder and watched as he clambered up his rhydon. "Ready?" she asked hoisting herself up and onto the back of her colossal dog-like pokemon. She hoped against all hope that Dallas could keep up. She couldn't risk waiting for him if the remaining Poachyena members had gotten their hands on the fossils they were tasked with retrieving at all costs. "Alright, see you on the flip-side." She grabbed onto two tufts of arcanine's fur before taking off after their footprints, the grunts' scent still present for arcanine to follow. She tugged on the clumps of arcanine's fur knotted between her fingers—mush, mush! They won't get away, she reminded herself. No one ever got away. "Extremespeed!" Isla shouted leaving Dallas to bite the dust...or, rather, snow.[break][break]

Together with arcanine she made it to the archaeological dig site. Snow had crystallized on her eyelashes and her face felt prickly and numb but they'd made it. No sight of the Poachyena members who'd made like a banana and split from the Pokemon Center just minutes ago, though. She slid off Arcanine's back and patted his side approvingly. "Thanks for the ride," she said as she swapped him out for a less noticeable pokemon: Zorua. As much as she'd love to, she couldn't stealth around the excavation grounds with a dog the size of a bear.[break][break]

"Don't be se—"[break][break]

Thwack![break][break]

Before she could even finish her sentence, Isla was sucker punched to the rib-cage and she keeled over as all of the air was knocked out of her lungs. What the—? A small, snarling pokemon leapt at her face but she was just quick enough to dodge its attack. Hungry jaws clamped onto thin air as it missed her by a hair. They seriously had poochyenas? Isla scrambled to her feet. "Zorua! Night Daze!" A dark purple rolling fog emanated from her zorua, knocking back the poochyena that had assailed her and clouding its vision for turns to come. Tsk, tsk, she thought as she drew her honedge having lost the element of surprise. "Shadow Sneak," she willed the honedge to vanish and reappear behind the Poachyena grunt that had caught her approaching. With a sweeping attack, it carved across the grunt's back, its sharp-edged blade drawing blood. "Uh oh. Where's your friend?" she asked, her lips curling into a smile. They were nowhere to be seen. "Hm...that's too bad. She'd better not be trying to make it out of here with our fossils."

Notes[break]
Isla followed the grunts' scent to the dig site.[break]
They were attacked by a grunt and his poochyena.[break]
Zorua used Night Daze to knock back and momentarily blind Isla's assailant. Game on.
