cait stared in utter astonishment as the presence of a false god descended upon moltres's perch and laid claim to it. its wretched and shadow-drench aura was a familiar one, the beast having been present at the tail end of their ill-fated journey to ho-oh's domain. at first she was wrought with fear and the desire to distance herself from the tainted creature, but the presence of stormy inspired her to take action. it was her duty to defend - heal - and to aid in repelling all that was evil.

'i'll do what i have to,' she thought, determined.

"flygon!"

she required little in the way of further prompting, spurred into action once she was granted verbal permission to intervene on stormy's behalf. her flygon emerged from the pokeball that had been secured to her hip, and she took her rightful place upon the dragon's back. with a single flap from her narrow wings they became airborne, cait urging her companion to close the distance with every intention of drawing the beast's attention away stormy.

"we're in this together," she uttered, her words meant for her flygon as they flew together.

sweat rendered her flesh slick and shiny as the sacred flame's raw heat reached her, but her flygon didn't appear to mind this minor discomfort. instead she sought to duck and weave, playing the part of an annoying pest and attacking only when ordered to do so.

- cait summoned her flygon .

- cait and flygon take advantage of the latter's speed and seek to draw attention away from stormy while she continues her trial .

Her breath is ragged as the climb wears on her endurance. With one arm she wipes sweat from her brow and down across her lips, tasting the salt as she takes a minute to catch her breath. It almost feels as if the torch has grown heavier the higher she climbs, each lantern feeling even taller than the last. [break][break]

But still, she continues, refusing to show weakness or slow down for even a moment. She's confident that she can do this, because she feels that she has to.[break][break]

The two behind her have melted into her peripheral, she's lost interest in making sure they're okay to follow - she has a mission to complete.[break][break]

In fact, the only time Stormy glances backward is when the ground begins to shake and her first instinct is to see if Farhan is surprised or not. His reaction incites unease as she switches hands to hold the torch in her off-hand, her dominant one automatically reaching for her belt.[break][break]

She gasps as a dark shadow falls over them, only for a molten beast to land upon Moltres' perch at the top, its wings unfurling to reveal a horribly unnatural Ho-oh. [break][break]

Cait spurs herself by summoning her Flygon, mounting the Pokemon with ease before flying off to distract the sick Ho-oh.[break][break]

The bird's sacred flames eat up the already charred and dry earth, setting fire to the sprigly branches and trees and whatever undergrowth. It's unrelenting in it's rage and unbearably hot.[break][break]

"Pyrrhis! Get to safety!"[break][break]

She had hopefully managed to shield herself behind a shelf of rock behind the latest lantern she had set aflame. Her skin is raw with the heat in general, sensitive to the touch. [break][break]

Farhan steps up, shouting to Cait to help light the torches. Stormy is momentarily confused by this, having earlier been convinced (or overthought it) that the ritual could only be properly done alone, any help at all would deter Moltres from appearing.[break][break]

However, she isn't about to deny help when it is critically needed. She releases her Charizard from her belt, mounting the beast swiftly while still holding the torch.[break][break]

"Fly me to the rest of the lanterns, Wadjet, quickly! We need to protect this mountain!"[break][break]

Wadjet bellows in response, kicking up grit and dust as she beats her wings to lift her off of the ground. The pressure is on as the black Charizard pushes herself to finish the ritual before Ho-oh can destroy it.[break][break]

Stormy Silph is able to shield herself from the flames, alongside cait alfric's help. as the SACRED FIRE collides into the stone. the stone whitens. melts. it crusts and crumbles as the flames subside. [break][break][break]

as the stone crumbles away and glows hot, Stormy Silph discovers a mural inscribed upon the lanterns' base. the heat reveals the brightening etchings.[break][break][break]

she sees a a feminine figure lighting the same lanterns. on the other side of the lamppost, the lucent engravings continue. the figure stands at the top of the volcano in one segment before revealing that she jumps into the volcano's magma in the next.[break][break] [break]

a sacrifice.

farhan and pyrrhis toss soft glances at Stormy Silph, witnessing the impending revelation. with somber eyes, the guide manages a breathless reply: "that is how it was practiced in old days. of course, that is... just myth. fabrications meant to justify barbaric practices!" he winces as beads of sweat stream down his tan skin. whatever sorrow he holds for the desecration of this mountain is well hidden behind his cool eyes.[break][break][break][break]

above, cait alfric soars through the sky with her dragon, her green hair in dramatic ribbons in the wind as flygon weaves in between flames. thanks to her help, Stormy Silph is able to light each lantern, with the final one lit at the summit. farhan is not far behind. his torkoal fires PLUMES OF LAVA in retaliatory defense. menacingly, the ho-oh beats its irous wings and leaves moltres' stone roost with scorches.[break][break][break]

in a predatory swoop, the false ho-oh summons boulders of ANCIENT POWER and tosses them toward cait alfric and her flygon. two greenies. one stone. like blades of grass, the ill-summoned beast desires them to burn. shrieking, the corrupt bird of prey attempts to circle back, talons out to grab Stormy Silph... or to cleave her in two.[break][break][break]

Even though she'd hidden, secure, safe behind the rock with Pyrris, she still braces herself. She still raises both of her arms to protect her head, and for good reason. Despite the rocks temporary security, it's no match for the corrupt Ho-oh's flames. It forces itself against the crumbly surface, superheating till it screams and bursts apart. [break][break]

Some pieces brush her bare skin, immediately bubbling into burns. She sucks in her breath, biting her tongue hard so as to not scream. She had never been afraid of the fire before, she wasn't about to start now. [break][break]

Wadjet circles from above, keeping her distance, her own fear preventing her from growing any closer. Stormy had fallen from her back or had asked to be set down in order to protect Pyrris and set aflame the last pillar.[break][break]

Stormy watches as the Ho-oh circles around, chasing after Cait as she tears through the sky. But something else catches her attention, the illuminated writing and vision in the flames. She's watching a young woman complete the ritual by vaulting into the volcano. Her determination, her trust is unblinking, undeniable. The volcano swallows her whole and she turns to face her instructor and his sad smile.[break][break]

Once again she ducks her head and braces herself as she takes a step towards the man, trying to hear him over the bellow of Ho-oh's rage and the thunder of the lava beneath her. [break][break]

Fear pulses through her then as Pyrris uses lava plumes from his back to defend himself, but it's in preparation for her end. Ho-oh's talons lurch towards her, threatening to cleave her in two. The volcano is only a few steps away, an escape, but also her demise.[break][break]

There's no changing her mind, however. Farhan had told her that the ritual must be completed for Moltres to appear. And right now, they needed Moltres to appear more than anything - they needed the bird to defend its territory, it's post. The Ho-oh had already torn up it's perch, massacring it as he was about to do the same to her.[break][break]

"I promised I would finish this ritual, I'm not about to turn myself into a liar."[break][break]

She's saying this mostly to herself in that miniscule window before she either gets grabbed by the bird or leaps. She's chosen to dive into the heart of the mountain and complete the ritual. Hopefully Ho-oh misses it's mark, it's feathery wings gracing her back, perhaps even pushing her as she runs off the edge of the volanco, falling, falling.. falling.[break][break]

a stone had clipped the wing of her flygon, temporarily knocking the dragon off balance before she recovered and sought to avoid the rest of the barrage. the ancient power was terribly potent, and a direct strike would likely knock them out of the sky if they weren't careful. cait clung tightly onto her companion, her eyes squeezing shut for only a moment as her mount twirled and whirled within the air.

"stormy," she gasped.

her eyes snapped open, a look of panic present upon her sweaty features as she peered downwards at the distorted bird that descended mercilessly upon her friend.

"no!"

cait spurred her dragon into movement, hopeful that they'd be able to intervene.

'no - no - no - no.'

stormy fell before she could hope to catch her, the grass-type gym leader barely within reach of her friend in that crucial moment. flygon came to a halt, forced to veer upwards as the heat of the volcano grew intolerable. instead, they hovered helplessly at where stormy had once stood.

"stormy!"

cait screamed her frustration and despair, the young woman's eyes stinging with tears as she stared down into the pit. her flygon was silent and still in that moment, her expression pinched into that of a grimace.

- cait succeeds in dodging the ancient power's onslaught - but at a price - she's unable to make it to stormy on time.

- both she and flygon are unable to follow, the volcano's excess heat too much to tolerate.

Stormy Silph falls. as she plummets, it is not the false ho-oh's cries that ring in her ears. it is cait alfric's. the world peels away, cut by the jagged, unforgiving frame of the volcano's crater. the heat is intense. her skin begins to burn. for a moment, she may believe she has committed a fatal mistake...[break][break][break]

from within the magma, something stirs. having healed within the volcanic bath from a fight with its intruder, moltres awakens. the flame pokemon stretches their wings forth. before Stormy Silph bursts into flame from being so close to the magmatic guts of mt. chimney, embers erupt and wrap around her body. she splashes into the volcano. sinks. defying all natural laws, stormy's flesh does not melt. does not surrender to the intense heat.[break][break][break]

the fire gym leader can not see, for her eyes are held shut by the thick magma surging around her. wings embrace her. shift her body and suddenly, Stormy Silph finds herself bursting through the volcano's stomach.[break][break][break]

the false ho-oh is not deterred by the theatrics of human tragedy. farhan and his torkoal flee the absolute summit as the corrupted beast circles back, the shock of having witnessed someone dive into the volcano's stomach galvanizing their legs. as cait alfric laments on her flygon, the false ho-oh extends its claws. however, a burst of lava erupts from the crater.[break][break][break]

a gurgled shriek marks the false ho-oh's recoiling retreat as moltres soars into the sky. it spreads its wings with a dramatic flurry of embers, and on its back, a triumphant Stormy Silph stands, clad in flames. the moltres caws defiantly at its interloper, glaring at the debased fowl with renewed vigor.[break][break][break]

It hurts. It hurts and she's on fire and she can feel her clothes melting away, catching flame and burning her skin and consuming her. The heat of the volcano grows intense, so intense that when she finally disappears into the magma, she's surprised that she feels nothing.[break][break]

Her eyes are pressed closed, her body tense, expecting to feel horrible pain. She'd made a mistake, surely. Farhan had been right, this was just a barbaric ritual that held no meaning.[break][break]

But something in her gut had promised her that he was wrong, that there was truth behind what she had done, that there was a purpose and reason she had willingly jumped to her end in the heart of the mountain.[break][break]

And it had worked, she wasn't dead.[break][break]

After what felt like too long, the feeling of wings wrap around her and she's lifted and on fire, but there's no pain. There's only adrenaline. She remembers what she needs to do as Moltres carries her out of the stomach of the mountain.[break][break]

The bird screams and the false Ho-oh screams back, blowing another sacred fire towards them. Stormy, already having seen the severity of that attack earlier and realising that Moltres had dove into the volanco to recover, urges the Moltres away and out of the blast, or at the very least, attempts to dodge.[break][break]

"Cait! We need to drive it back!"[break][break]

She points at the Ho-oh, desperation making her voice tremble, but perhaps it is also because she was just reborn. Wadjet seems to regain confidence, watching her master come out alive despite being consumed by lava. From a distance, the Charizard uses air slash over and over to cut up the air and drive back the demented bird.[break][break]

cait scarcely believed her eyes, both she and her dragon counterpart appearing utterly gobsmacked as they bore witness to moltres's arrival and stormy's subsequent return.

"it's moltres," she mouthed, her voice barely above a whisper.

she trembles before the fire-type's might, momentarily transfixed before she stares at the freshly emerged stormy in awe. the silph had been drenched in heat and molten earth, and yet she had miraculously survived the literal trial by fire with nary a scratch. a wave of relief caused cait's shoulders to sag, only for the moment to be broken by stormy's plea.

'drive it back?'

the young woman cranes her neck to stare at the unholy abomination, her expression transitioning from awed to severe.

'if only we could defeat it properly,' she thought.

but they had little choice but to combine their meager power with moltres's in hopes that that would be enough, with cait firmly patting her flygon on the back.

"it's time, girl," she said. "we can do this. i'm with you."

her companion blinks and gives an affirmative nod, rising whilst bearing her mistress upon her back to meet ho-oh in battle. a dragon breath soon spills from their maw, the stream of dragon-infused power rushing toward the corrupted beast.

- cait and flygon snap out of their stupor.

Stormy Silph's charizard's AIR SLASHES fail to make purchase. the corrupted manifestation of this falsified deity is able to shield itself from the onslaught. however, the distraction allows cait alfric's flygon's DRAGON BREATH to surge across its tainted form. its beak expands horrifically, to a point where it might as well be unhinged before a gurgled caw splits the ears of everyone present.[break][break][break]

sensing imminent danger, farhan orders his torkoal to use ANCIENT POWER. old boulders rise from the earth. they fire at the false ho-oh as it begins to charge. the stones break upon the fiery feathers, but fail to topple the creature for the ho-oh begins to dive toward Stormy Silph and her newfound partner with a devastating SKY ATTACK.[break][break][break]

the moltres eyes their allies with gratitude before cawing at the fire gym-leader. the bird of fire seems to ask her to command her, some ancient trust having been forged by flame.[break][break][break]

Stormy winces painfully against the false Ho-oh's horrifying scream. It's pain reverberates in her core and she can't help but feel guilty or afraid. But yet her own drive to survive prevents her from backing down. Wadjet fails to stop the Ho-oh from approaching, and she can feel Moltres' muscles coil between her legs. She instinctively holds on tighter, her breathing slowing as she focuses on concentrating.[break][break]

She can see in her peripheral that Farhan's Torkoal has begun to use ancient power. There's a twitch in Moltres' shoulder muscles, an indication that there's something Stormy should also try to do. With a deep breath, followed by the legendary bird's caw. There's a power that seems to surge between the two of them, a form of trust and respect. She squares her shoulders as the Ho-oh descends with it's sky attack.[break][break]

And Moltres meets it with it's own ancient power. It seems to borrow from Torkoal's, but the bird's power surges even stronger. Larger boulders rise and quake as they bring forth a barrier. In the confusion, Moltres leans forward and propels itself and Stormy hopefully out of harms way with a burst of agility. [break][break]

Stormy's jaw is stiff from concentrating, from the fear that drives her forward. She can do this. She will defend this mountain.[break][break]

"We are not afraid of you, false Ho-oh!"[break][break]

Her cry is powerful, like her voice rose from the tips of her toes. She glances briefly at Cait and her Flygon, nodding firmly and offering the girl a brief smile. [break][break]

"It's time, Cait!"[break][break]

For what? Stormy wasn't really sure what she was trying to say, it just sounded strong and confident. [break][break]

Moltres caws again, it's body heating up rapidly as it prepares to meet Ho-oh in the sky for a sky attack, much the same as the false deity had done to them.[break][break]

cait was laden with fear but she does not allow for it to debilitate and to prevent her from acting. stormy had proven herself willing to dive into the bowels of a volcano and even combat the false god who sought their destruction.

'i need only follow her example. both of us will.'

"rock slide."

cait's words were uttered quietly, but her order was loud enough to be detected by her dragon. the flygon did not hesitate in the face of heat and flame, intent on ensuring that her mistress survived this trial. the false ho oh would be quieted and they would play a part in doing so. flygon invested a large quantity of her energy toward conjuring the pointed rocks. the number she accumulated impressively large as they surrounded both her and her mistress in a layer.

they'd soon be directed toward the distorted ho oh, the damage they'd administer in comparison to moltres's likely to be trivial; but the pair were unwilling to merely stand by and do nothing.

"fire!"

a storm of pointed rocks shot toward the ho-oh, a terrible fury that broiled within her flygon causing the attack to dramatically propel itself forward in a terrible spray.

- flygon uses rock slide on the distorted ho - oh !
