He swore to himself that he wouldn’t return to Sootopolis as long as he lived. But the circumstances proved to be a particular exception, at least this time around.

He didn’t know how he was able to get the courage to ask her if she was free, and if she wanted to go somewhere with him, alone. How did he even manage that? He couldn’t remember. I’m pretty sure I didn’t drink anything… how did I manage it without even breaking down and making a complete fool of myself?! He thought as he shook his head.

He hadn’t returned home, not ever since he left after swearing to get his siblings out. He made sure that nobody would recognize him—and figured that he had the perfect way to hide it. Touching the right side of his forehead and coming away with some matted blood he realized how he’d conceal himself.

After renting a room under a pseudonym and flying back to Verdanturf to get some of his nicer clothes and some bandages, he made a hasty retreat back and began preparing. He’d asked her to come meet him at a certain time in the evening, seeing as that was the best time to actually show her what he wanted to share with her without giving away the surprise.

In the years that had passed since his time away from the city, the place had grown somewhat—and there was one café that sort of qualified as the highest of ‘fine dining’ that was available there. Once he’d booked a reservation for them both there, he then returned to his preparations.

Several hours later, he turned to face the mirror and check if he looked alright. He’d decided to wrap some of the gauze around the obviously injured part of his forehead, and then brushed his hair back. Sure… they all know me with my hair down… might as well go the opposite way and take to my other style… he pondered quietly as he reached for the bottle of gel and began styling his hair.

Once he was done, he took one last look at himself in the mirror, and hoped that nobody would recognize him. One of Sootopolis’ prodigal children had come home—if but for an evening with a friend.

Or were they more than friends at that point, he didn’t know anymore!

Stormy was honestly excited. Several days ago Laurence had asked her - in person because he was confident - if she was busy in the next couple of days. Apparently he had something really beautiful to show her and he was positive she might enjoy it.[break][break]

The woman had not seen many things in Hoenn, so the prospect of beauty and awe was a welcome thought for her.[break][break]

Unfortunately, due to her bum leg and sour attitude because she felt useless and slow. She hated feeling useless.[break][break]

Lars had requested she show up later in the evening when the sun had gone down. This was strange and honestly made her more than a little bit nervous. The dark wasn't something she particularly enjoyed, but she would push through her own anxiety if only to make her friend happy.[break][break]

The whole plan was a bit mysterious. She had been asked to wait inside of a local inn in Sootopolis at a certain time. [break][break]

Due to her bandaged leg and her crutch to keep the weight off, Stormy had taken to wearing a lot more loose-fitting clothing. That usually meant dresses and skirts. Trying to pull on pants was incredibly painful, after all.[break][break]

So, just a couple minutes past the time she had been asked to arrive, Stormy sat waiting in a chair at a table, trying to fend of servers as they pestered her about who, exactly, she was waiting for. [break][break]

"Just let me sit down, would you?"[break][break]

She was growing impatient, but not with Lars. [break][break]

he got a lot of explaining to do!

Where had his bravado gone now?

He could only sigh as he closed the door to the room he was renting for the evening as he made his way down the stairs as quietly as he could, contemplating if he was going to wear the scarf he had tucked into the jacket pocket of the overcoat he had on—but was still indecisive about it.

It didn’t take too long for him to overhear a commotion coming from the dining hall, and so he turned his attention there—quickly heading in so that he could quell the voices that were trying to get a…oh.

Oh, whoops.

“That’s alright, she’s coming with me,” he said in a gruff-sounding voice, before some of the staff let out a tiny little squeak at the sound of his voice.

“Ah, we’re so sorry, Mister van den Berg! Sorry if we bothered your date for the evening,” one of the lankier wait staff apologized, before ushering his companions out and leaving them alone for some private time. Once he was sure that they’d cleared out and were pretty much alone, he then pulled up a chair and sat next to Stormy.

“Some hell we’ve been through, huh,” he said quietly. His eyes caught sight of her injury, and he sighed again. “We’ve been through some shit, and I can tell you’re still upset… but…” he trailed off, before resting his head on his arms, which he’d placed atop the back of the chair and letting out a long sigh he didn’t realize he was holding in.

“I wanted to show you something. But first, we have to get something to eat. Look, don’t worry, I’ve got it all covered… shall we get going?” he asked her after a few moments of silence passed. He was pretty certain she was going to ask him about why he was known as van den Berg and not Anderson among the inn’s staff, but that was a question he’d answer for later once they’d left the place for the evening.

He then stood up and straightened his jacket, before moving to carry her bridal-style, hefting the crutch along in his left hand at the same time he literally swept her out of the chair and into his arms before heading towards the back exit of the inn, off to go to the small café where they had a dinner reservation waiting for them.

Lars startled her as he approached. He spoke gruffly, scaring away the servers who had previously been harassing her. They had only been concerned that she was loitering and holding up a table that someone else could use.[break][break]

But when they referred to him as 'van den Berg', she narrowed her eyes suspiciously. Stormy was positive that was the name he had asked her to use when she arrived, but it had slipped her mind because it wasn't his real name. But because he had insisted she use it, she hadn't uttered his actual name.[break][break]

When he sat down next to her, she blinked, watching his face carefully. It was then that she noticed the gauze around his head. She gasped, instinctively reaching to touch it. Thankfully, before her fingers graced his forehead, she retracted them.[break][break]

"Ah.. yes. Some hell indeed."[break][break]

Her chest pangs with sorrow as her thoughts go back to that fateful day. Her leg seems to clench up as well, a painful reminder of everything she'd been through and everything she'd lost.[break][break]

Lars continues to speak, not granting her the chance to address his new injury. But suddenly she's distracted, lured in by the temptation of adventure. [break][break]

"Wait, we're not eating here? You could have asked me to wait--"[break][break]

She was cut off before she could say 'wait at the cafe he had reservations for', because suddenly his arms were underneath the bend of her knees and she was lifted into the air.[break][break]

Embarrassment coloured her cheeks a violent shade of red, and her hands balled into fists against his shoulders.[break][break]

"I can walk myself, you know. I'm not some useless child, van den Berg."[break][break]

The way she pronounces his fake name is dangerous, and her body is tense with distrust. The way he was acting was strange, bold. It was out of character for him and it made her nervous.[break][break]

“Not in here, idiota, they’ll ask too many questions,” was his first answer at the sudden outburst he got from her. Once they’d managed to navigate outside to the back street of the inn, he then did what she requested: he let her down to the street. But not in a rough, ‘ehh do whatever you want’ kind of gesture.

Making sure that the crutch was nearby, he leaned it against the wall before letting her slide out of his hold, ensuring that she was leaning against the wall on her good leg. “I know I have to explain something to you, but not around here. You know the walls have ears…” he said in a harsh whisper, before grabbing a battered-looking Heavy Ball and sending its occupant out.

Backing up enough to make sure there was enough room, the hulking form of his Metagross made an appearance—before suddenly letting out an extremely confused grating noise—why were they back here?

“You can ride on his back, I’m sure Ro wouldn’t mind. Would you,” he said in the dual-type’s direction, before the Metagross folded its legs in and hovered down to a level safe enough for her to climb on. Once he’d gotten her secured, Ro then floated up with the help of Magnet Rise, ensuring that they were at least on a similar level. The crutch he grabbed at the last second and laid it near where Stormy now sat on Ro’s back.

“Okay… so you must be wondering why they addressed me with a different surname,” he began as they started heading toward the café, exiting the back street and hitting the thoroughfare. It wasn’t too crowded out, but the sight of a lady riding atop a Metagross accompanied by a man was a rather unique sight to see.

“Look at it this way. There… there’s a reason why I haven’t mentioned anything at all about my hometown until now,” he continued quietly, hoping that she would listen to what he had to say.

“It’s been… eight years since I left. Because I found out something about my father…”

Fury makes her face turn crimson. Did he just call her an idiot in another language?![break][break]

She was just considering giving him a swift kick in the pants and letting herself down when he set her down instead. Her hands reached for the wall he had her beside and she used it to regain her balance. [break][break]

Stormy's eyes are heated, watching Lars with distrust while he brings out his Metagross. He's hiding something, and Stormy's biggest pet peeve are people who aren't honest with her. She opens her mouth to speak, to get upset with him, but is cut off by reason.[break][break]

"You'd better give me every single detail."[break][break]

The woman begrudgingly climbs on Metagross' back, careful to mind her injured leg. When she's finally situated and secure, she places a hand protectively over the bandages on her leg as she watches Lars with a guarded look.[break][break]

"Yes, I am. Why are you lying to me, Lars? Is your name really van den Berg? Is Anderson not your real name?"[break][break]

Her eyes narrow suspiciously as he continues, alluding to something his father had done.[break][break]

"Are you a criminal?"[break][break]

and this is where he bears. it. all. well not all but most of it.

“Look, if I was a member of the opposite side I’d have kidnapped you right away. But I haven’t. I’ve already been with a fellow senior Ranger, I don’t know if you know her, Miss… Amavi, yes that’s her name, and we flushed out some Rocket activity over at Oldale. And, think about it: we were together in the rescue mission that went…well, you know how far south it went. If I had to hazard a guess I’d say some of the other companions of the Interpol Agents team may be suspect…” he muttered softly, walking as close to her as possible.

While he’d addressed one part of the question he hadn’t answered everything yet. So he decided to take this in steps, nice and easy.

“Look. If you think I’m suspect, then why didn’t I abandon you when the warehouse exploded?” he continued quietly, restraining the fury in his voice, a bit of a spark in his light-green eyes darkening them as he turned to face her squarely.

“If I was, I’d have left you and Kyle to die. I’d have saved my own skin. But I didn’t. I’ve worked with Kyle before, too. He may have nothing but dogs on the brain, but he’s just really like that. Rough exterior with a hidden goodness buried somewhere,” he continued, letting Ro set the pace as they went down the quieter thoroughfares, hoping not to attract too much attention.

“And, if I really was evil, Ro would’ve tossed you off his back. Think about it,” he went on, reaching into the pocket of the fancy coat he wore and pulled out one of his two wallets—this one had most of his identification cards in it along with some pictures. He then flipped it open and handed it to her, showing his official Ranger ID registered under Anderson, Laurence Michael. While battered and obviously chipped in some places, he’s had this since he started out seven years previous.

Well, shit, I just revealed my age right there, he thought absentmindedly, glancing over at her before seeing some of the pictures he’d stuffed in there suddenly fall out.

“Ah, fuck,” he hissed, quickly making to grab them—but a few had sailed out face-up, mostly showing him in a younger, pre-Ranger life. Only he wasn’t alone, there were two other people in the picture and it was pretty damn obvious they were all related. The Lars in these pictures looked nothing like the one Stormy was with—younger, more carefree, basically him before the harsh realities of everything set in.

Another one of the pictures was of his family, only for some reason the part where his father was supposed to be standing had been ripped off roughly.

(Just for uniformity's sake since all the older pics have him with his hair up, just think of it with his hair down, okay?)

The way he responds holds so much hidden fury that she's shocked. Perhaps even a little intimidated or scared. [break][break]

She blinks and sits back, listening to what he says. She doesn't attempt to interrupt at all, too afraid he may get angry with her.[break][break]

Anderson brings up the mission they had worked together, and it strikes a chord of grief in her. Tears build up behind her eyes, threatening to make rivers down her face. She bites her tongue though, forcing herself to maintain composure.[break][break]

He's giving her endless amounts of evidence, but Stormy still feels unsure.[break][break]

"Maybe it's an act. Not all criminals are stupid and reckless. How else do you think Team Rocket infiltrated and took down my home? It was probably someone my father trusted, someone the whole company trusted who backstabbed us all."[break][break]

Her voice shakes with fear and uncertainty. Perhaps she's made a mistake agreeing to come on this date with him.[break][break]

Fortunately, Laurence reaches for his wallet to show her his ranger ID. Her eyes look over it briefly, reading the name he had given her when he'd met. It's not much, but it strikes Stormy as truthful. And the fact that several photos fall out of his wallet face-up, showing her younger Lars and his siblings is enough to sway her.[break][break]

She hesitates, bending down slowly to pick up the pictures. Her thumb brushes dirt off of them gently, lingering on the face of her friend. [break][break]

"I-I'm sorry. It's... it's hard for me to trust, especially when people aren't totally honest with me in the beginning. I'm so afraid."[break][break]

Because, after all, she was a Silph. The Silph's had been a target in Kanto, who knew if someone was coming to kill the remaining ones?[break][break]

“Guess we have something in common, then. Only if in your case he may have been assassinated—for which I apologize for your loss—I did some digging to find more information on my father, and I find out he’s actually colluding with them. Acting as a weapons supplier…” he mutters bitterly, running a hand through his spiked-up hair.

“That, and ever since I turned thirteen he started acting strange. Inviting all manner of people over to my home in all ungodly hours of the night, drunken laughter, the stench of tobacco everywhere… hell, did you know that my younger brother was blinded by some of those idiots because he’d just gone down to get something to calm his upset stomach down one evening? Me and my sister were furious after we found out what happened the morning after,” he continued, scooping up the pictures and stuffing them back into the wallet before closing it and hiding it again in his jacket.

“We told our mother about it, and she said she’d do something about—well, she told us she’d try talking to him. And what did it get her?” he went on, stopping for a few moments before reaching into his jacket again and bringing out the thin, ivory pipe he hadn’t touched for a few years now and checking if there were leaves in the well.

Snorting a few moments, he rummaged around and brought out a small sachet of what faintly smelled like vanilla and mint, before scooping up some and stuffing the other end as best as his trembling hands could manage.

Once he’d lit up the pipe with the help of a match from a small box he carried with him, he took a long first drag to calm himself down. After a few moments, he then released a long, thin trail of smoke, relishing the burn he’d staved off for so long. The last time he’d actively done this was when he was twenty-one…

What, six years of going cold turkey all down the drain because of this topic.

“…we didn’t hear from her after that. At first we thought it was normal. But then, days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months… and then… word got out that they found someone floating there. Right out there,” he continued as he pointed toward the lake in the crater.

“…they found her headless body not too long after that.”

Another deep inhale; another slow, excruciating drag before a fresh cloud of vanilla erupted from his mouth.

“I’d had enough. Enough of it. I told them to get out of there. I don’t know where they are now. We lost contact with each other. But maybe it’s for the best… for their own safety.”

Stormy's eyes are wide with shock as Lars continues. He's shaking, and he's angry. He's telling her everything and it's now that she understands. He's telling her the truth.[break][break]

A weapons supplier?[break][break]

"Lars--"[break][break]

She starts, but is interrupted. He's on a roll, his hands are shaking as he runs his fingers through his hair. Stormy's shaking, too. [break][break]

Her own family had been similar in that they held unreasonably late meetings. For most of her years spent in the Silph estate she had rarely seen her father for more than a few minutes at a time. It was rare that he even sat with them for dinner. [break][break]

Stormy's eyes seem to glisten with emotion, feeling his pain as her own. Just like her, he's witnessed and experienced a lot of heartbreak and horror.[break][break]

Lars reaches into his jacket, fumbling for something. When he retrieves an ivory pipe she looks from it to him, seeing the indecision or the regret in his eyes.[break][break]

Just as he raises it to his lips to light it, his hands still shaking, her own hands wrap around his, holding them tight. Hopefully her skin is warmer than his own and may bring him comfort.[break][break]

He points out over the lake, and her heart sinks. [break][break]

"I'm so sorry, Lars. I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that, and I'm so sorry I doubted you. That was selfish of me to assume, I'm so sorry."[break][break]

She bows her head, dropping her hands from his.[break][break]

He didn’t realize that his own hands and arms had gone cold the moment he’d started talking.

It was one of the few topics to ever bring a chill to his skin, which was why he dreaded having to share it—there was this uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach the longer he talked, but at the same time he kept talking the more…relieved he felt; like there was someone pulling out something from inside him—albeit slowly and painfully.

His own gaze lingered for a few moments as he blinked at her reaction, the trembling in his hands stilled by the warmth of her fingers around his own wrists. He… certainly didn’t mind that, no, not at all. He continued to stare at her for a few moments before a cloud of heady vanilla touched with mint obscured his face as he let out another long breath.

“That… there was a reason why I hated this lake so much. It was because of that. But… at the same time, I remember something she told me. Well, not just me, but Léanne and Henri as well,” he said quietly once the smoke had dissipated from around his form and he flicked the pipe, knocking the built-up ashes into the wind as he turned to face the shore.

It was like Ro had noticed what he was up to—and a sudden shift of trajectory, they were eventually headed toward the water’s edge, following Lars before he came to a stop and turned to face her again.

“Do you… want to know something about this cratered lake?” he asked her a few moments later, in that same quiet tone of voice, waiting for her answer.

She can feel his eyes on the top of her head. Stormy looks up from her lap when the cloud of minty vanilla smoke rises from his face.[break][break]

"I'd love to."[break][break]

The Metagross seemed to have changed direction, and eventually Stormy noticed where they were. She could see water, and while at first her heart sank at the terrible memory Lars had brought up... it also soared.[break][break]

She gasps, eyes wide with surprise as she stared into the pool of starlight. It reflected the moon and the sky so perfectly, and the water was still. Nothing moved or breathed, it just sat in cold, beautiful silence.[break][break]

“There’s a reason why people flock out to see the view from here by the crater-lake, especially this close to spring… the full moon reflects perfectly on the surface of the water. But it’s the stars… they look like diamonds deep underwater, yet at the same time there’s the illusion of them floating to the surface,” he hummed quietly, looking out over the expansive lake.

Ro must’ve noted his intention, and deliberately edged himself closer to Lars so that at the closest he and Stormy were shoulder to shoulder as they looked out over the surface of the crater-lake.

“She told us, all of us… that if you could wish hard enough… you could reach into the water and scoop out a star from its depths. Only it’s not just a star, its a little diamond you can hold in the palm of your hand… and that whoever goes here for a… uh… for a date, would… would find happiness. Somewhere,” he stammered as he took another drag and exhaled another cloud of minty vanilla; his mind almost blanking out as he then cleared his throat and looked away just so he could fucking hide the sudden rush of color that rose to his cheeks.

He didn’t know if she was looking his way, but he was so thankful he was much taller than she was so he could just pass it off like there was something on his face.

However, his Metagross wasn’t going to let him get away with it and playfully nudged him in the thigh, jostling him out of his thoughts as he suddenly broke away from his flustered attempt at hiding his blushing face only to look down at his ‘wing man’ who let out a grating noise he knew was Ro’s ‘laughter’ at best.

“Ro! What the fuck,” he hissed in the Metagross’ direction, the color on his face more evident the longer he stared down at his Pokémon companion’s face. At the same time, though, he had a feeling she was looking at him…

She says this softly, that perhaps Lars hasn't even heard her. She's not intending to interrupt him, preferring to listen to him explain what kind of beauty she was experiencing.[break][break]

The Metagross shifted himself so he was closer to Lars, and the movement had Stormy stumble a little bit. Her balance lost, as she had been leaning up precariously to get a better look, caused her to knock shoulders with Lars just as he finished his little embarrassing romantic bit.[break][break]

He wasn't looking at her though, even though she was looking at him. There was heat in her cheeks because she was finally starting to see the feelings he had for her. This wasn't really a simple date, it was sort of something more.[break][break]

When he did finally look at her, but to hiss at his Metagross, Stormy glanced at her hands, embarrassed that he had likely seen her staring.[break][break]

"This is.. wow. This is wonderful, Lars. Thank you so much for showing me this."[break][break]
