He never took any promotions even though he was eligible for them. Probably why he gets to be stuck in jobs such as these every now and then.

Clocking in too early in the morning, he arrived in the kitchen before everyone else assigned on the same duty. Preferable, since he doesn't want others to see him waste ingredients as he try his hand at baking for the first time. He liked desserts, but he never expressed an interest in creating them.

Taking out his phone, he'd send a quick message to one of his friends.

'Good morning bird girl. Quick, name a good dessert.'

He wasn't even sure if she was awake yet, but he figured he'd try anyways. If it doesn't work, he'll move down the list until one of them responds. Kyle wasn't too confident on his choices of confectionery that he could try to make for this event. He never was one of those fancy people with sophisticated tastes, like the ones they were supposed to cater for. At least if it didn't work out, he could blame someone else for choosing the wrong one.

Leaving his phone on the table, he'd start wandering around the kitchen, taking inventory of the materials and anything similar. Might as well get the job done soon.

kyle is not alone.

league head quarters is not void of activity this early in the morning but the kitchen is one of the dead zones that sees little to no activity. the cafeteria isn't open for hours so there's little purpose outside of a visitor looking for a small snack. yet, today fernando finds himself in kyle's shoes. rather then be assigned such a remedial task, he seeks to do it out of his own good will.

money can buy something that outclasses whatever he can concoct in both appearance and taste. however, it is the time he puts in toward the activity that he wagers persephone amavi will appreciate. it's a naive theory but one he's willing to waste his morning on.

the sign of another individual in the kitchen causes his eyes to narrow. "good morning," he announces, making no further gesture of suspicion. "quite early to be in the kitchen."

"Hey. Good morning."

The words were too casually spoken, with the usual tired and disinterested tone everyone would have early in the morning. He would only take note of the voice, which was familiar to Kyle but not enough to pin a name on it, as he reviewed what was available. He'd only turn to the figure after a moment, sparing another moment to stare in surprise and muse as to why he was here, before continuing.

"Early is good. It's quiet and there's less people to judge me if ever I lick the batter off the beater," he responded.

Ending his statement with a shrug, he goes to where his phone was. Still no response from evelyn silph . Should have been expected to be honest. She'd probably be busy making herself look pretty for the camera or something before she'd check her phone anyways. Placing it face down on the counter, he returns to Fernando with almost the same question he asked her.

"Do you know any good cake recipes?" he asks bluntly. "I'm rather, er, unskilled in this area."

fernando feels his brows furrow at the comment. he's not familiar enough with him to know whether he's joking or not. and, knowing the type of people that the league employs it could go either way. how uncouth.

"no. i'm not much of a baker either."

he says that but fernando knows exactly what he's looking for. finding it is a different matter entirely but navigating through each shelf and fridges becomes a swift matter. chocolate chips, cream, egg beaters and a spatula from a drawer. all necessary and tools that he intends for today's treat.

"i'm just going off whatever i find online."

"That's, uh, smart."

He realizes that the internet should have been the first thing he needed to approachin times of crisis such as this one. It always had an answer to anything and is more reliable than some people more oftenthan not. He prepares the most basic ingredients of a cake before he realizes that they have yet to set a goal.

"Anything you wanna do then?" he asks. "Something simple that amateurs wouldn't fuck up would be nice."

Such was a safe decision. If they were going to serve this to important people, he figured he'd rather keep mistakes to a minimum instead of going out with a bang with an intent to impress, only to risk failing. They do not have much time either, as the kitchen will be overrun with other cooks later and their freedom inthe kitchen will be limited later on.

He'd probably suggest chocolate cake if he doesnt have any requests.

it's not a request. fernando's adamant about his choice in delicacy because of the intent and practicality behind it. he knows better then to waste his time on something she won't eat or much less can't.

there's also no reply of a them or we. fernando has no qualms with them sharing public ingredient but this is not joint effort. his purpose is singular and kyle will have to make due with what he has.

a bowl is brought out and a bag of chocolate chips is emptied into it. a quick pop in the microwave will warm it up enough for him to add the cream. all he has to do is wait for the microwave's beep.

"Chocolates," he repeats.

He opts for chocolate as well, seeing as Fernando chose it. If anything goes wrong, there would be an option of asking the councilman for an input to remedy a mistake since both of them would be doing the same thing anyways. He wouldn't think the chances of it actually happening would be high though.

Kyle starts shifting through the pages of his phone for the recipe, following the same procedure that Fernando does. His actions were more sluggish and slow compared to Fernando's. He'd blame it on not having his morning coffee if prompted about it, but Kyle does so for the sake of copying the other in case he misinterprets what was written on the internet page about baking.

"You don't look too excited for someone who volunteered for this job," he points out as he waits for the microwave as well.

It was a given that he wasn't assigned for this post. No prior knowledge of baking and the lack of interest from what Kyle could visibly tell made him wonder if there were any ulterior motives, but he decided not to dwell on it. Fernando will explain about it himself instead if he chooses to do so.

"i'm absolutely ecstatic."

the sarcasm that drips from his comment is sweeter then anything either of them can bake but is void of any sass. the meaning is read but not explicit, like with all things pertaining to the most controversial of council members.

the microwave goes off and fernando pulls out the melted chocolate. now we can use the cream. in accordance with the instructions, he puts the cream in, slowly stirring it in with the much thicker melted chocolate. when it settles and the mix seems to be a perfect blend, he goes looking for more ingredients. glazed pecans, peanuts, toffee, oreoes, and whatever else he can think of that goes well with chocolate.

he empties each bag out into a respective bowl, making it easily accessible for the both of them. now all he needs is a proper tray.

Small talk doesn't seem to work. Kyle shrugs off the show of detachment. He knew he couldn't force it out of a person even if he wanted. He wasn't the type to talk if he wasn't prompted about it anyways, and so he decides to concentrate on his dessert instead.

The mixture was lazily made, setting it aside as soon as it was decent enough to be served to people. He reads the instructions given by the dessert site as they made the chocolate, getting to the next part at the same time as Fernando got to it.

"Ah, I got it," he volunteers.

He grabs a pair from the nearby cabinet, setting them in the table in a way that both him and Fernando gets to have one within their reach. He follows the next steps carefully, before eventually slowing down to watch how the other does it. Kyle knew he'd fuck it up some way or another eventually, but by doing exactly what Fernando does, he makes sure that he doesn't.

Worst case scenario is that both of them butchers their creations, but at least the difference between his and Kyle's wouldn't be too far off from each other.

what comes next should be painfully obvious but even fernando would've forgetten if not for the explicit directions. sheet paper is a necessary tool to prevent the chocolate from sticking to the pan. in a crude, but effective manner, fernando dons gloves and starts to make small balls of chocolates. in hindsight, using the scoop may have been better, but he's no baker. several ugly blobs of chocolate line his sheet and with his free, untainted hand, he starts to add in the different fillings. some only have nuts, some a mix, he plays with the different types because he's unsure which one persephone amavi will like the most.

like their trip in petalburg, he goes all-in. if he can't narrow down which one will be the most effective then he'll just try them all.

Kyle decides to go for boring, plain chocolate, forgoing the nuts altogether as opposed to Fernando's work. He'd say it was personal preference, but Kyle would rather just finish the task than waste his time trying to decide which one would taste best. Besides, he was certain there were people who preferred their chocolates without them.

Smaller blobs were neatly placed in rows within the tray. Having done the part sooner than Fernando, Kyle spent the few moments he gained for finishing sooner on sculpting a Poochyena head from the remaining chocolate. Deft hands made the piece of art recognizable enough, but Kyle's sloppy work attitude made it less appealing.

He continues working on the piece of chocolate, casually watching the councilman work as Kyle molds it like clay until he reaches the next step.
