it's been almost an

entire day since the news arrived and rhian still can't contain her excitement. she'd never been as smart as leo, or as ambitious as the other girls in her year, or as charismatic as her cousin. really, it is a wonder she decided to pursue this career instead of just sitting back, relaxing and living off her remaining family's— moving on. rhian is just surprised and exhilarated all at once, standing where she is, a bundle of nerves trembling in front of the elevator.

she glances at the time. ten minutes early still, but that number would soon become five, and then one, and then —arceus forbid— minus one. with renewed determination, rhian passes through the metallic doors and takes in the sight of... an already occupied desk?

is this mr. lane? a pause. he looks shorter and, admittedly, more effeminate than i expected if so. but if this is mr. lane, then what of the doors behind? her mind is refusing to see the obvious, trying to make head and tail of the situation in the most roundabout ways. "i'm sorry, i think maybe i got off at the wrong floor," she finally says, gesturing back at the elevator. "i was looking for mr. lucas lane's office."

mister lane had very recently hired a fresh-faced assistant, and cait couldn't at all blame him for doing so. she had claimed the formerly emptied seat of mauville's gym leader, after all. and while she still managed to work from her new home by making use of her fax machine and her business email, her desk was more often than naught unoccupied due to her mounting responsibilities.

'i can't exactly clean his office or sign off on documents when i'm miles away.'

"you're at the right place."

cait eyed the young woman whom had just arrived and wondered if this was the girl that mister lane had accepted for the position.

"miss mcarthur, correct?"

'she's pretty,' she thought.

a pair of bright green eyes darted in the direction of the clock mounted on the opposite wall.

"right on time, too," she remarked, standing. "let's not keep mister lane waiting."

with that said, cait would escort miss mcarthur into her boss's tidy office after knocking gently upon its wooden door.

Lucas sat at his desk, which stood towards the back of a spacious office. Sunlight illuminated the room, pouring in through a large window. Pieces from his collection dotted the walls. The most notable being three masks, similar to those yamask carry. They hung on the wall behind Lucas.

He typed away at the keyboard, eyes glued to the screen as he wrote an email.

"What was it now?" he thought to himself.

is the right floor after all. this revelation is both a relief, because she wouldn't be running late on her first day; and a curse. after her embarrassing confusion, she wants to bury herself under the ground, never to be found again.

"yes!" rhian's body goes into attention at the mention of her last name. she's being led through the door and into her new boss' office before she gets a chance to ask for the young lady's own name.

rhian has to fight the urge to poke her head through the door rather than be a normal human being (could you tell she's pretty nervous?) as she mutters a soft "excuse us" to enter the room.

once inside, she is torn between waiting to be presented and presenting herself. she's desperately regretting not having asked someone about common etiquette in these scenarios. in the end, excitement gets the best out of her.

"good morning, mr. lane. my name is rhian mcarthur. i'm excited to start working for the scientist renowned for shedding new light on the fossil revival process!"

cait quirked a brow, admittedly taken aback by the young woman's boisterous display.

"miss mcarthur will be serving as my replacement," she said, simply. "and i wanted to formally introduce her to you."

'replacement' was indeed the appropriate term for it - seeing as the young woman's responsibilities brought her farther away from mister lane's primary office with each passing day. it was a pity that she had only just acquired the position some months ago, too. but cait had forewarned her superior of her intentions prior to submitting her application for the position.

"we've already gone over her credentials," she continued, addressing her superior directly. "and i'm certain you'll be in good hands, sir."
