wonder why Lars seems to dislike taking elevators...

Look, for some reason he didn’t like taking elevators.

But due to the nature of his own work as a Ranger, and the fact that he had to drop by every so often the Ranger HQ and drop off all the paperwork he would complete while he wasn’t on duty just made him…

Lars really doesn’t like small and tight spaces. That’s it, pretty much.

Kind of ironic considering how much I like the wide open spaces nature has… he thought idly, cringing internally when he had to get into an elevator somewhere in the residential area of Lilycove.

He had to pick up the paperwork of a fellow Ranger who had been too sick to actually get the hell out of his apartment and deliver the three thick envelopes’ worth of overdue reports on their behalf… and since for some unknown reason the stairs were under repair, he had no choice but to take the Arceus-damned fucking elevators!

“Fuck,” was all he could hiss, jabbing at the button and slipping into the empty space once it had opened. Jabbing at the button to let the door close, he then leaned against one of the walls and tried to control his own breathing because, shit, it felt like the entire place was closing down on him.

Ugh.

What a fucking nightmare… he thought crossly, his stare hyper focusing on his boots so he didn’t have to break out into a nervous sweat—well he already was, he just didn’t realize it—and began muttering under his breath.

Most of the words weren’t even understandable, either…

There was probably never a good day to be trapped in an elevator, but today, in particular, was not that day. [break][break]

For whatever reason, Stormy had not been having the most ideal day. Maybe training hadn't gone as well, or she'd run into a particularly nasty individual who had royally pissed her off. Regardless, when she bumped into Lars in the elevator she was shocked and not prepared to face a friendly face.[break][break]

Her good foot caught the elevator doors as they were about to close. She had her arms full of paperwork and her hair caught in her mouth. [break][break]

"Hey, pal, next time you see a lady running towards the elevator door, holding it open would be nice. Jeez, what the fuck happened to chivalry?"[break][break]

However, when she shuffled her papers to see who it was she was trying to pick a fight with, she was surprised to see Laurence Anderson. She hesitated, choking on her tongue as she tried to find the words to explain herself.[break][break]

"Uh, I mean. Heh... evening, Anderson.. sir."[break][break]

Her cheeks were bright red with embarrassment as she ducked her head.[break][break]

He didn’t know he was muttering, having slipped into his mother language as he tried to calm down and waited for the damned fucking door to close.

Fuck, I’d take stairs over this any day… he thought, his lips continuing to dry up as he waited for the dreaded ‘ding’ noise to echo throughout the small space and move downwards, so that he could get this messy paper run over with.

Was he hearing things? He wasn’t too sure.

He continued to mutter ‘lo odio, lo odio, lo odio,’ under his breath until he heard the voice speak a second time—and that’s when he snapped out of the little trance he’d sunk into. Looking up for the briefest of moments, he saw that he was no longer alone—Stormy had entered the same elevator that he’d taken but for some reason was…

What did she call me? He thought idly, blinking like an owl for a few moments before he decided to speak up.

“What…did you call me, Stormy? I thought we were friends,” he began, although his voice sounded so wound up it was like a squeaky toy had gone off. He was about to continue speaking with her when the entire elevator cubicle shuddered, before the overhead lights flickered and momentarily went out.

“Ah, fuck’s sake,” he hissed, the entire space temporarily being submerged into darkness before the emergency light flickered on. Just how far down had the elevator gone? He had no idea.

“Well, shit,” was all he could add a few moments later, before muttering something again, ‘odio questa situazione,’ and hesitantly reaching out to press the emergency button on the elevator panel…

…but getting no answer.

Was he.. talking to himself? In another language?[break][break]

Stormy wasn't really the perceptive type when it came to people being different than her. She wasn't too worried about people not understanding her, simply because she assumed they would. So when she heard Lars speaking to himself, and she didn't understand a word of it, she was thoroughly confused.[break][break]

However, his startled response to her referring to him as her superior threw her off even more. Hadn't she ever called him sir? [break][break]

And his voice sounded like it might die out, like a balloon that's run out of air.[break][break]

She shuffled her papers to one arm, careful not to drop any of it. He was acting strange, even stranger than she did whenever she got locked in an elevator.[break][break]

"We.. are. But you're also older than me, and my superior. I'm sorry?"[break][break]

The way she words it is a little harsh, but it also stems from how irritated she had been previously. Earlier that morning she had been visited by Fernando and interrogated on her actions during the rescue mission.[break][break]

Lars seemed to retreat back into his proverbial shell and go back to chanting whatever demon speech he had been previously. Her eyebrows furrowed, and she glanced from him to the door just as the lights flickered and the elevator jerked to a halt. [break][break]

Now, with her own heart pounding in her chest because her own claustrophobia was kicking in - and PTSD from her last few times being locked in a malfunctioning elevator - she looked back to Lars.[break][break]

"Hey, uh.. Lars? Are you okay?"[break][break]

Mostly for selfish reasons, she'd set her papers down and walk towards the man, her hands reaching for his own - to try and be comforting - but also to comfort herself.[break][break]

“O—oh, didn’t you know?” he began quietly, still in that unnatural-sounding voice of his. Fuck, why did the elevator have to stop now?!

“I—I actually like being more informal around someone I know or am familiar with… and one of them happens to be you,” he added a few moments later as he jabbed the emergency call button again—but just like earlier, there was no response at all.

“Why the fuck did… why the fuck did the elevator have to break now…” he groaned as he leaned back against the wall—unflinching as the envelopes silently slid out of his hands to settle somewhere near feet as he felt a lighter touch slowly envelope his own hands—and hell, he didn’t even realize that he was shaking until he felt that warmth touching his own.

Maybe that was what he needed to calm down? He didn’t know.

He could feel his heart going a mile a minute inside his chest, not because of Stormy’s contact, but because of the sinking reality that they were trapped in an elevator—and it was also Arceus-damned dark at the same time felt like everything was literally closing down around him and about ready to squeeze the fucking life out of him.

“I—“ he said with an abrupt start, blinking before forcing himself to return to the present and look down at her. “Shit, I’m s—sorry, I’m just… I hate… I hate small spaces…like th—this,” he forced himself to blurt out to her before slowly sinking to the floor of the elevator cubicle.

Never mind if he’d accidentally dragged her down with him as well to sit down on the floor.

He kept jabbing at the emergency button, which was now starting to make her heart beat faster. Someone really needed to fix these elevators, she'd been stuck in a broken one three times now.[break][break]

The first had been with Fernando and Cait following a terribly run battle against her brother. The second had been with Kim... following an equally terrible day where they had been fighting.[break][break]

It seemed that elevators breaking was a symbol for disaster.[break][break]

"Okay.. okay, I'll drop the 'sir.'"[break][break]

She shakes her head in slight amusement, trying to focus on him and not on the way the walls seem to be closing in on them in her imagination. [break][break]

Envelopes slip from his fingers and fall to a mess on the ground as she slips her fingers in his hands. Her hold is steadfast and strong, promising protection.[break][break]

But suddenly, she's being dragged to the ground as Lars sinks to the floor. Her heart is hammering, but only because for a moment it felt like she was being swallowed by the dark. [break][break]

Every once in a while the lights in the elevator flicker, promising freedom. [break][break]

Her hands squeeze his tighter as he admits his own fear. Her smile is kind, and she makes the decision to sneak a little bit closer, close enough that she might actually lean on him.[break][break]

"I'm afraid of small spaces too. It'll be okay, just take deep breaths in... and out."[break][break]

he sounds like a squeaky toy gone wrong

“Try…being shut up in a small, cramped space…and then left there for a f—few hours, because…because they treated you like sh—shit,” he breathed in, trying to calm himself down.

It didn’t help that his own imagination had gone into overdrive, all manner of worst-case scenarios suddenly flowering into life and haunting him, taunting him, causing him to panic even more—

—but at the same time her presence served to comfort him, which was a relief in and on itself.

“You…you are, too?” he continued quietly, turning his attention to see that she was now much closer than she was earlier. Maybe having her closer to him did calm him down, he couldn’t hear the hissing in his ears as loudly as it was going earlier anymore. That was a good thing, right? Right?

Attempting to steady himself, his eyes flickered up every so often as the lights continued to flicker on and off, on and off—and then stayed on for quite some time. Relieved that the electricity was still holding at least, he then turned to her—before wondering what had brought her here.

“So… what brings you here?” he asked, his own voice going soft. Catching sight of the sealed envelopes near his feet, his other hand then idly reached for them and pulled them closer, hoping that his didn’t get mixed up with hers.

“Also… s—sorry if I didn’t see you earlier,” he apologized her way a few moments later.

His own increasing panic was starting to affect her. While she was normally good at changing her focus to not freak herself out, the fact that Lars was stubborn in his claustrophobia was enough to crack her own protective armor.[break][break]

With a sad smile, Stormy gave him a heavy pat on the shoulder.[break][break]

"Yeah, small, cramped spaces aren't my cup of tea either. I'm also afraid of the dark."[break][break]

Fortunately the lights turned back on, granting them a little window of peace.[break][break]

Stormy would lean back, crossing her legs as she sat across from Lars. Now that the light had poured back into the tiny cubicle, she no longer felt that Lars needed her that close.[break][break]

"What brings me here?"[break][break]

She glances back at her own papers, her heartbeat picking up slightly at the reminder.[break][break]

"Oh.. I had a, uh.. meeting today with Fernando regarding the rescue operation and the... the part I played in those two men who were killed."[break][break]

Her voice trembles a little bit at the mention, the horrible memories all flooding back.[break][break]

Thankfully, taking deep breaths actually worked for him—even more so when she was around. For some strange reason his own panicky thoughts were calming down, the longer he homed in on the sound of her voice.

It isn’t until she mentions an unfamiliar name does he snap out of his little reverie, looking up at her once again and then blinking for a few moments. “Fernando? Who’s that?” he inquired, maybe a little too quickly, mind.

Now, see, Lars here is Hoenn-born and raised, so he’s not that aware of the fall of a region far away from where he’s spent his entire life. So his prying would be somewhat excusable since he’s not that aware of things that are happening outside of the region.

She takes a moment to not blow up in agitated rage. She's not mad at Lars, she's probably not even mad at Fernando. [break][break]

Lars' comment on her not killing them, while thoughtful to try and comfort her, was unnecessary.[break][break]

"I know, I know. But the footage makes me look not as guilty. It's fine, it'll all be sorted out. I know it was an accident, and so do you and Kyle and Thomas."[break][break]

Though there's some part of her that frets it wasn't totally an accident, and that Natsume had intentionally murdered those men.[break][break]

“Exactly what I said, who’s that,” he deadpanned in her direction, giving her a very flat stare—one that would rival the angry little glare she wore right now for the ages.

Clearing his throat, he continued, “Look, I don’t get involved with politics as much as possible. It’s all a big, corrupt mess up there in Evergrande. Again, why do you think I’m a Ranger and not part of the legions who so want a position of power in the League’s main headquarters over there?” before staring back down at a certain point of his boots again to spend a few moments to think quietly.

The elevator light overhead flickered again, before going out for a few moments, and then hearing a little zapping noise, came back on—if but for another few moments.

“Wait. That… that person you mentioned is your brother?” he asked, blinking in her direction now. “You… you never told me you had siblings. How many siblings do you have?”

Now was the time to turn the questions on her because shit, he wasn’t going to stick his nose in where it didn’t belong unless the original person opened up about it.

Nothing seen, nothing heard… that was his policy most days.

“Also, I prefer staying out of the limelight and just being one of the masses… although I don’t know, you think people might start coming after me and Kyle eventually?”

Stormy is honestly infuriated by his lack of attention to the world around him.[break][break]

"It's a big, corrupt mess because people like you turn away and pretend it isn't happening. Saying, oooh, I don't pay attention to politics because I don't want to get involved. The only way to stop it from being corrupt is to be involved!"[break][break]

There's a fire burning in her cheeks, and all of her claustrophobic fears have melted away. She's in her own world now, blazing away in a political battle.[break][break]

Stormy furrows her brow in irritation now that he's completely changed the direction of the conversation. [break][break]

"I have three siblings. Alex and Evelyn and I are all adopted though. Fernando is the only Silph child by blood."[break][break]

She barely notices that the elevator lights are flickering back to life. There's a clunk, like gears are starting to shift back into life. It won't be long now before they're freed.[break][break]

Stormy sighs, removing her hands from his. She's become heated, investing herself in an argument that probably doesn't need to even continue.[break][break]

"I refuse to be one of the masses. I'm out here fighting for Hoenn's freedom. In fact, I've just been named Lavaridge's gym leader. I plan on doing everything in my power to make changes, I can't sit idly by while corrupt politicians make uneducated decisions."[break][break]

“So you’d be lured over by absolute power? Don’t you know the saying… ‘Absolute power corrupts absolutely’, or something along those lines?” he began quietly, once her little outraged burst was done.

“Hadn’t I told you about what happened to my father? You already know some of it, right?” he continued, lowering one of his hands to the elevator’s floor and twirling it absently across the top of one of the three envelopes he was supposed to be rushing over to Ranger HQ.

“If you give someone that much power, or money, or Arceus forbid, even both, something’s bound to go wrong…” he trailed off, a hint of darkness creeping into his voice.

And of course, he didn’t miss the little quip she’d made about Lavaridge.

“Oh, so that was you, the one the little old ladies I deliver letters for were talking about a few days prior?” he mused, looking up to her, staring directly at her face.

Unflinching, unyielding.

“If it is, and I hope it truly is, then I offer you my congratulations. Although does this mean, you’re not going to be working in the wild as a Ranger anymore I take,” he added a few moments later, his voice going quiet as he said those words.

And then back to everything else.

“Look, my father got involved in something he can’t get out of. But he’s in too deep. It can corrupt. It will change people. What if it changes you into someone else, Stormy? What then? What would you do?”

Time to break out the existential, Lars.

Was Lars trying to pick a fight?[break][break]

If Stormy was still holding his hands to comfort him, she had long since dropped them now. In fact, she had even leaned back, away from the man. She could hear the faint footsteps of people coming to their rescue, but it was now apparent that the elevator had stalled before reaching the floor below them.[break][break]

"Not every person who comes into some degree of power turns into your father, Lars. I'm appalled you could think so low of me as to think I'll become corrupt like him. I am a Silph, and I will only do what's best for this region and for Lavaridge."[break][break]

She'd stand up now, hands visibly shaking with emotion. [break][break]

"I'm not trying to become the President of Hoenn. I'm helping bring a town back to its feet, to help prepare it for this war we're deep in the belly of."[break][break]

Lars' congratulations, while genuine, strikes Stormy as not entirely welcoming. Her eyes grow serious as she stares back. Just like him, she is unflinching, unyielding.[break][break]

"Do you doubt me? There are times when change is good. I hope that I change, that I become stronger. I pray that this new position grants me the ability to help people. Do you want me to stay the same feeble, helpless Ranger people think I am? Are you intimidated by me now?"[break][break]

There's rattling from below as if there are people knocking on the doors to where the elevator should be. In another minute, there's a lurch beneath their feet. The elevator is slowly but surely being released down, falling into place. It won't be long before they're freed.[break][break]
