The ball shakes twice. That's expected. After the two shakes, it goes still and the characteristic click of a successful capture seals the deal. That's also expected. What's not expected is the cool crunch of grass under the pressure of anything other than her feet.

Erin's reaction is quick. Her head snaps to the source of the sound, pink strands flipping and bumping against purple. She's not sure what she's expecting, considering she's literally just a few steps outside of Lilycove City, but one could never be too careful.

Oh. Just a man. No Rocket uniform or particularly suspicious outfit. Her gaze moves on quickly from the task of inspecting him to checking on the motorcycle she'd left waiting by the fence. The bike is still there, safe and sound. Relief washes over her face.

"I'm sorry, I thought you were..." She smiles, letting the silence fill in the blanks for her. Why lie when she could let the man's imagination be the one coming up with her cover? A short pause. "Are you here to catch pokémon? Mars and I wouldn't mind the company, if so."

Upon hearing his name, a gengar appears from behind her, or perhaps beneath her. With her mind focused on the newcomer, she wouldn't have noticed if her gengar decided to hide in her shadow in an attempt to give the man a scare.

the way she reacts to someone else's presence is the same as his own. the only difference is that she acts upon it wherein he'll feign ignorance. perception is reality and there's merit in refraining from letting others know your capacity. those on edge often have good reason to be so—he's no exception but he wears the mask of someone else, something kinder and unworried.

"oh, thought i was who?"

his name, his title, his visage is one that sets the world of pokemon ablaze. it's taken the perfect cocktail of time, skill, and luck, but the face of fernando silph is one that most of hoenn knows. kim cole-essam and ALEXANDER STONE are the few that match his infamy in regards to being a household name but even they pale in sheer reputation.

to be confused for someone else is a new one. his look is distinct and her cliffhanger has him on the hook.

he may not be able to replicate DISARMING VOICE but his smile should suffice. it's the one he wears in lilycove, when meeting new people, and most importantly, when he plays to the image of a benevolent councilman.

"i am. please don't mind me."

This man is either too dumb, or plays the game too well.

Erin tilts her head, feigning confusion at his own confusion. "Why, there's only one organization that keeps everyone on tiptoes around here, as far as I'm aware." Though her initial plan was to ride on the man's imagination, the Rocket name is as good a fallback as any, and honestly the first thing she thought would come to anyone's mind.

Seeing that she was wrong about that, she laughs it off. "I must be letting the rumors get to me."

The man smiles and the charm he exudes is quite disconcerting. It only succeeds in making her more wary. Erin can't shake off the feeling that she's inadvertedly come across someone important, or very dangerous. Maybe even both. She hates the feeling of not knowing. Play along is all she can do.

The gengar wanders farther down the route in search of new playmates as she moves to bring her motorbike along. The safety stand is released, but rather than ride it, she pushes it forward, making it walk next to her.

Her tone is friendly, but not too interested. She's gauging him as much as she thinks he's gauging her.

the implication is not lost upon him but fernando allows himself to smile at the comment. it may seem off but once she realizes who he is, if at all, his reputation will explain the rest. there are few who stand against rocket with an earnest, optimistic outlook that rivals prideful boasting. fernando silph, hoenn councilman, is one of them. his public image tailors around putting and end on the growing menace, doubling down after the vicious media scandal involving dahlia goode 's rescue.

"i'm not looking for anything in particular. i'm not much a trainer so i'll make due with what i can get my hands on."

he says so as he freely tosses a pokeball up and down, toying with it as they continue down the beaten path.

A simple 'ah' is all she gets from the man. How anticlimactic. Erin would have to reconsider signing up for acting lessons sometime soon, because her results at the moment are disappointing her.

The truth is Erin isn't too familiar with local celebrities and most of the faces that make the news around Hoenn. In the short days—literally days—she'd been in the region so far, there's been so many faces, titles and names to memorize that her brain kind of shut off after the lost and recently rescued Commissioner, the Champion whose name was in the mud after she stepped down from the post, and the many pretty faces prompting readers to click on their ads.

She'd set her news feed to reader view without images ever since. It doesn't help his case. Perhaps in a couple more days she'd be able to recognize him at a glance, but not today.

An opportunity to test the extents of his definition of 'not a trainer' shows up shortly after. Two do, in fact. It would have been perfect, had she been interested in such a thing to begin with. The girafarig doesn't seem too aggressive. The solrock is hard to read. Erin ignores both of them, but slows down just in case the man does wish to catch one of them.
