One glance at the growing queue has her wishing she'd called for delivery instead. It's a little late for second thoughts now, she supposes. Another customer leaves with their order placed, and she steps sideways towards the counter. One step closer now. Only thirteen more to go. She sighs.

Given her dissatisfaction, it's inevitable for Erin to wonder which part of the process is holding this queue up: the cashier, the machinery, the process itself, or all of it. The cashier seems at ease talking with customers, but not so at ease with the screen in front of her, though that's not necessarily her fault.

Without a closer look at the UI, she has no way to come with a definitive conclusion. Too many variables led to too many different conclusions.

A hasty customer destabilizes the queue. Erin is caught between a plus-sized woman and a thankfully more average-sized man. When the collective takes a forced step back, she knows she doesn't want to be in the woman's way.

The bump is inevitable. She turns to the man with a muttered "Sorry."

conversations in their queue were sparse, the ones standing idly only meaning to get their orders and leave just as quickly.

kim was no exception, his face stuck in his phone to avoid any unneeded attention, and when it was aimed his way, he’d give a quick wave in their direction, eyes still locked on the screen.

he only wanted to get a bite to eat and be on his way getting back to his usual grind in a timely manner.

as he pecked away at the screen of his phone, a bump brought his face up, eyes locking with the one who he had made contact with.

a girl, shorter than him, had pushed against him, her avoidance of the one before him leading to a collision with him.

he wasn’t bothered one bit, in fact, he was delighted to have met someone with such an admirable aesthetic.

“your hair looks pretty.”

he said offhandedly, the phone slipping into his pocket as he smiled at the woman before him.

“did you do it yourself?”

This couldn't be happening.

Men tend to feel too intimidated to make any advances on her, and quite frankly she doesn't blame them. From sassy quips to glares to off-handed comments that send them crying to their moms, Erin knows how to keep unsolicited attention at bay.

If there's one physical trait she's particularly proud of, however, it's her hair. This man clearly has good taste, and his compliment is welcomed until she recognizes whom it comes from.

She falters but it's not because of the pretty face (okay, maybe it is a little). The seemingly molded jaw, the tousled dark hair, the playful smile. Erin doesn't recognize him as much as she recognizes his features: it's the very man she framed for a heist not too long ago.

He has the kind of face that stops people in their tracks and Erin supposes he must know it, so she hopes and prays to a god she's too cynical to believe in for her pause to be weaved into such a narrative, for the man to be narcissistic enough that her pause is weaved into any other narrative.

"I go to a stylist to touch it up every month."

She turns away. The conversation would end there, she would get her croquettes after eleven more orders, and her crime would fade into nothing.

he tilted his head, a slight sense of confusion forming on his face as she turned away.

while he would usually take this as an end to the conversation, her body language interested him.

it was something he couldn’t exactly pin down, even with as much practice in the field as he had gotten.

was it embarrassment? annoyance? anxiousness? whatever it was, he felt the need to push a little further, examining her body with a watchful eye. (:smirk:)

“what stylist? i’d love to give them a try. it's obvious they know what they’re doing with how alluring your hair is.”

She hesitates. On one hand, Erin wants nothing more than to leave this instant. On the other, the man is giving her enough reason to want to answer him, if only to crush his hopes. It's been two times that he's mentioned her hair, and it would be twice now that she falls for it.

Her tone would have been more playful if she hadn't caught herself and eased it into something between cheekiness and cold judgement. Flirting with someone who could link her public life to Rocket is the last thing she needs to do.

"She only offers her services on appointment and is very picky when it comes to her clientele. Doubt she'd give you a second look without a referral."

The quip enveloping her answer satisfies her. It's not her best work, but it's certain to offend the proud.

a soft smile would form on his face, chuckling following soon after, her words catching him off guard yet doing minor to perturb him.

“i don’t think stealing the spotlight from you would be too hard.”

he thought to himself, speaking aloud promptly after.

“what's wrong with wanting to see you again? you seem like a delightful person to be around.”

it was hard to pinpoint whether his words were backhanded or not, the cadence in his voice both patronizing yet genuine.

“and if i’m not enough of a referral for her to give me the same treatment as you, why don’t you help me out with that?”

it was far from his intent to make any new acquaintances today but with someone this- sharp tongued- before him, how could he resist.

The sarcasm is evident. His tone may be misleading, so hard to read it's evidently practiced, but Erin's behavior has been anything but delightful.

When she turns again, it's only partially. Just enough for her to hold his gaze in a half-hearted side glance. If she could hear his thoughts, her reaction would likely be much more different. As things stand, she only offers a curious "Is that so?"

She knows she can't afford to garner the man's attention any longer, yet there she is, doing nothing to end the conversation.

In her mind, two paths lay before her. She could keep trying to ignore him and most likely keep failing because if there's one thing Erin can't stand it's not getting the last word in an argument. On the other hand, giving in meant he'd get what he wanted and would therefore have nothing else to talk to her about.

"What's your name?" she finally asks.

those who choose not to look to politics are truly a blessing, their ignorance of the topic aiding him when out in public. she seemed to be no different from the rest in this respect; though she may have just as easily have been feigning ignorance. and second guesses were lost on kim, his sense of common courtesy overtaking any ill thoughts towards her.

“kim cole.”

he’d respond, his features turning lax as he looked her over one final time.

Erin has heard the name, of course. She's read it multiple times. Now that she sees the face paired with it, she's not sure what to make of it. How many bad turns had she taken in order to be in this situation? Not only had she framed a councilman for theft, she'd also had the misfortune of running into him only days later.

Her expression betrays each of her thoughts, showing a façade of calm instead. "Alright. I'll put in a word for you."

Is it only to get rid of him, or is it also some twisted way of making up for what she'd done?

Diverting her gaze has two purposes: to check how much time she had to wait until this agony could end, and to effectively avoid his. "Call me Erin."

Her name is safe. So is her surname. She'd gone through painstaking measures to make sure of it. Yet she still can't will herself to give it away. The situation doesn't call for it, and she's certain that deep inside he'd only offered his own full name to brag.

a finger could not be placed on her thoughts exactly, but a change in body language caught his attention, his expression stifling before softening, a light smile forming on slightly glossed lips. it seemed every attempt made on her part to push him away only made him want to reel in that much more.

“what a lovely name.” he says offhandedly, as he looks forward, the line shortening with each sentence shared between the two.

“i’ll be sure to remember it. and you as well.”

for now, their time together was drawing to a close, her turn to order coming up promptly as he looked forward.

“i hope to see you again, erin. maybe next time we can have a longer conversation. i feel like information from you could fill me up better than any food court croquet could.”

slightly smug were the only words that could describe him as he uttered those final words, upturned lips a little too devilish in their demeanor to be anything less.
