They're almost all the way back to Rustboro and the scenery greeting them back is quite nostalgic. If he squints, he can see the city's tall stone buildings looming in the distance. It's still early, the sun is high above their heads and the stone walls and cobblestone paths are still visible despite the distance.

Meteor Falls pans into view below them and as Leonardo's metagross starts its descent into Route 115, he gently shakes his flying companion awake.

she's been awake. she really has. the light shake from leo only alerted her of their arrival; she only leaned on his shoulder and closed her eyes to properly enjoy the moment, not to sleep.

"thanks for the ride, meteoro." she hops off the metagross' back with a bit of the pokémon's help and scans her surroundings. the big craters surrounding them is a dead giveaway as to where they are. they're standing on top of meteor falls—on top of one of the craters, in fact.

they had sneaked out here a couple times back in their school years, but it still makes for a very odd spot for a date. she turns to her now boyfriend. "you have a really weird understanding of the word date, leo."

Leonardo stops to consider Rhian's words for a second.

"I did say we were going on a date, didn't I? I lied. We're catching you a flying pokémon."

Normally it wouldn't be too important. The habit of keeping one pokémon for flight and one for surfing in a team is popular among trainers due to its obvious utility, but for a couple of scientists it's not always necessary.

As a physicist, Leonardo himself didn't go on field trips that often, though he did have a couple team members to get him places if need be. That's one thing Rhian is currently missing, and what they were in this place to fix.

"Air taxis aren't cost- or time-effective in the long run."

He walks by the sudowoodoo without a second look.

rhian doesn't

think leo's ever lied to her before, or if he ever did she at least isn't aware of it. the confession comes as a surprise, but the subsequent feelings of betrayal are offset by his reasoning for it.

leo noticed a need of hers that she never mentioned to him. furthermore, he took the time to plan an outing like this on his one day off, instead of just using it to rest or to have fun like he'd made her believe.

she smiles at him. that's keeper material right there. "you're a liar," she declares. loud, serious, moved. "but you're the sweetest liar i could have asked for, so i'll forgive you this once."

she doesn't even notice the sudowoodoo as she follows leo towards... wherever he was going. the azurill splashing in the water far below also goes unnoticed as she mulls over the real reason behind their outing.

"eh? but leo, there's a problem. i didn't bring any candies with me!"

Rhian's words make no sense to him.

"Candies for what? Stop being such a glutton. You'll really turn into a snorlax one of these days."

It's the only possible explanation he can think of, for her to be so hungry after an imaginary projection of their day to hunger for food already. This girl would make his wallet cry.

"We can have dinner at that Kalosian place you liked going to in Rustboro. My treat."

[break][break]

But first, he would have to catch that gigalith trying to pass off as another rock in the scenery.

[break][break]

Leonardo notices immediately. As much as it tried to blend in, like the sudowoodo earlier had, this gigalith's skin is too bright to look anything like the rock formations in Route 115. Even with all that dust on its body.

[break][break]

He calls his metagross.

[break][break]

As if they needed further confirmation that a battle was about to happen, a sandstorm begins thanks to the gigalith's ability Sand Storm. They have its attention.

[break][break]

Rock type pokémon are weak to steel type moves. This would be a breeze as long as they didn't let the gigalith explode. The last part isn't as easy as it sounds.

[break][break]

"Don't get too close. Shoot from afar."

[break][break]

It's the most sensical approach to this battle. Neither he or his pokémon would be in immediate danger even if the gigalith decided to go kamikaze on them. Metagross heeds its trainer's orders with a series of long ranged Bullet Punches that grow to look more like bullets than punches the longer it shoots.

[break][break]

Sometime down the line the gigalith's skin shines, product of an Iron Defense no doubt. That's fine. Anything the gigalith does would be fine as long as they kept their distance.

[break][break]

That's what Leonardo thinks until he's met with an actual Explosion.

[break][break]

The rock surrounding the gigalith crumbled under its feet, threatening to fall down the cliff. If Leonardo didn't want to catch the pokémon, that would be no issue. Seeing as he does, it is, and now he needs to rescue it before they lose it.

"Shit. Metagross!"

[break][break]

Metagross rushes to the rescue. It's not afraid of falling because it can levitate them, but the collision it feels from the gigalith's body falling on it would leave a bruise unless treated. Small splinters of rock that fly off and bounce on its body on its rush to the site of the explosion, it can ignore the pain of, but even then those bumps would need healing too.

Leonardo tosses a red-and-white ball before the gigalith finds another way to hurt itself.

That's when he sees one of the pokémon he's really looking for. A dragon.

Metagross may be aching, but it still can put up a good fight. He's trained it. However, the drampa doesn't seem interested in a fight when it slowly but surely flies down to Rhian's side.

how it's pointedly 'rustboro', not 'home' anymore.

she started calling their apartment in lilycove her home too, though to begin with rustboro never felt like her home. home used to be alto mare, where she grew up next to her mommy and daddy until mommy was gone and then so was daddy.

for leo, who really used to consider the city of stones his home, to say it though—it makes something in her stomach twirl. more than his comment about her being a glutton does.

"it's for the pokémon, silly!" she answers with a pout. "how are we gonna catch them if we don't feed them first?" she makes it sound like it's the most obvious thing in the world and that leo should know it too. it's because she genuinely believes luring pokémon with candy is the default way to catch pokémon.

her rant prolongs until after leo's engaged a gigalith in battle. "you know, the other day when i visited the safari, i brought so many sweets and it was the best catching experience in my life." it may have also been her first, not counting the few other pokémon she'd befriended outside of the safari.

[break][break]

in her recalling of past events, she doesn't notice the drampa that soon makes its way next to her. "oh!" she says, startled. later, she'd add a smile and a "hello there." rhian reaches up to caress the side of the bearded pokémon.

"leo, oh my latias, it looks just like a grandpa!"

[break][break]

rhian tilts her head when the dragon flies one circle around her, maybe looking for something on her. could it be berries? "i'm sorry, big boy, i didn't bring any sweets with me because a certain someone didn't warn me we'd be coming here."

she closes her eyes, pondering for a second. "hmm... hey leo? can't we bring it along on our real date later?" her eyes sparkle at the thought. "we'll eat lots of yummy pastries and you can have your pick at one!"

rhian presents an empty pokéball to the big dragon. how exactly she'll convince the restaurant's staff to let such a big pokémon inside, she'd figure out later. "what do you say?"

"There's a lot of questionable assumptions in what you just said, but sure, we can take the drampa with us."

Leonardo had intended on catching it to begin with, so having the extra mouth to feed and pay for not that big of a problem. It's more of a given already.

"So you're ordering a bunch and feeding the drampa only one?"

[break][break]

Karma has Leonardo stumbling on a rock at that moment. Looking down, he realizes the rock is literally part of the ground, until it blinks and he realizes it's actually a Pokémon.

[break][break]

A kabutops, to be specific.

[break][break]

Its scythe-like arms slash at him, threatening to cut him. Thankfully his metagross is there in time. Metagross easily pushes the kabutops back with its arm, before rushing at it full speed with a Meteor Mash.

[break][break]

The attack leaves a depression on the ground that makes it look like another of the famous meteor craters, although of a smaller magnitude.

[break][break]

Now with plenty of room, the kabutops gets to finish its Swords Dance. It gets ready to attack. Metagross doesn't let it.

[break][break]

The difference is of milliseconds, but Leonardo's metagross' Bullet Punch strikes it on the mouth just as water begins to pour out of it. Water splashes around the two, but doesn't reach farther.

"Finish it off."

A Hammer Arm pummels down on the kabutops, leaving it lying on the ground as straight as it had started. For the second time that day, Leonardo tosses a pokéball.

a small dedenne sneaking around while leo busies himself with the fossil pokémon and decides to follow it, both questions hanging in the air until they're each done with their small individual adventures.

"are you looking for berries all the way up here?" she asks the small rodent. it's cheeks are so big they look like they're overflowing. rhian can hear herself squeal internally at how cute it is.

that said, there's something odd about this dedenne in particular. one of its cheeks looks bigger than the other, which in itself is a pretty huge feat. both are so huge already. rhian tilts her head, intrigued.

the mystery is solved when the dedenne opens its mouth and presents the berry it had hidden inside to rhian.

[break][break]

"oh no, don't worry about me, i'm fine." she shakes her head and waves her hands to emphasize she didn't need the treat. "please go ahead and eat it." after all, she has her doubts about a dedenne's saliva doing well in her own digestive system.

[break][break]

"my boyfriend promised to take me to this super nice restaurant after this. the pinap shortcakes there are sooo fluffy, you should check them out," rhian happily continues.

another idea. "actually, don't you wanna come with us too? it'll be fun!"

since the money wouldn't be coming out of her pocket, rhian has no trouble offering the dedenne a pokéball of its own.

Rhian is offering more pastries to wild pokémon like it's nobody's business. Guess what, it's Leo's business. Now that he's offered to treat her to dinner, it's his money she's offering to give away.

"You do realize I'm not rich like your grandfather, right?"

Her grandfather, her aunt and anyone else in the family. Leonardo still remembers the first time he visited her house, back in Rustboro. He expected an average-sized house in an average-looking neighborhood and what he got was the judgement of a lady whose eyes could slit throats if she wanted.

Leonardo still shudders at the memory.

[break][break]

He wonders what became of the lillipup they had in the house. Leonardo never got to see it again after he moved to Lilycove. Even throughout Rhian's own moving process, he only had the misfortune of seeing her aunt.

The jangmo-o walks in on their conversation without a care in the world.

First it goes to Rhian, and then to Leo, seemingly looking for something. It couldn't be food because neither of them had any. Could it?

"Sorry, buddy. Outta luck here."

He reaches inside his pockets and empties them. There's a set of keys and a wallet, but no Pokémon treats to be seen.

her head at those words. she's been caught offering more treats to new friends, that much she can tell. with him being the one paying, she can understand why the thought would be alarming. however, what did her nono have to do with this?

her answer comes so naturally it's clear she hasn't thought things through, hasn't stopped to consider how leo may be feeling about it.

before she can ask, a small scaly pokémon surprises her from behind. it's there for only a fraction of a second before it rushes off to leo. rhian giggles. standing side by side, the similarities in their expressions are undeniable. the little pokémon has the same tired frown that leo does.

"it seems to like you, leo. ooh, we should bring it with us, too!" in her biased mind, it's a perfect plan. then rhian would get to dress both of them up and take adorable pictures for the new scrapbook she bought only the day before. she really wants it to happen.
