the sun is rising but the horizon is blotted out by tall buildings. it's still the early hours of the morning but already she can hear the city hum.

she used to stay awake until night bleeds to day by choice, now it's out of a combination of obligation to her job and a pervasive sense of unease that settles in the pit of her stomach.

the pokemon growls to announce an intrusion, and persephone snaps to attention.

the wild pokemon freezes up at the sight of the snarling umbreon's bared teeth and begins to back away; awkward little lops backward on legs that are too short and too long at the same time. the helioptile presses her ears to her scalp in a subservient gesture, as though to make herself seem even smaller.

persephone calls off her pokemon with a short whistle and places a hand on the umbreon's head, giving it a couple of quick pets to show appreciation for her protectiveness.

soothing her own pokemon is in vain. as soon as the helioptile turns her back to the pair, the umbreon lurches forward in pursuit, pinning the wild pokemon down as it whines pitifully. persephone furrows her brow at the uncalled for action but chooses to not chastise the her pokemon, tossing out an empty pokeball to cease the struggle.
