the body he clutches to his own is still, but warm. his hands, shirt, cheeks are wet. the chaos around him has muted into a dull hum. he barely leans back in time to dodge a lethal swipe, back hitting wood with a creak. the top of his head hangs over the pier's edge.

a surge of fighting instinct overcomes him and yet, landon remains unmoving. his adrenaline only fuels his terror as he spies the glint of metal. a shadow falls over him, but he cannot focus on what it is. he can only assume it is the grim deliverer of his fate. he waits, still clinging to the body like a child with its doll.

and then comes a breath of cold.

the man stills, caught perfectly in his moment of attack. landon stares. he can still make out the grim set to his features among the frost and cracking skin. he lets his head fall back, staring into the sky with shaky breaths. he does not move.

the lapras, fearful that its attack affected more than intended, swims closer. a togekiss enters the scene, colliding with the grunt, unaware that he is no longer a threat. the frozen body splinters.

pokemon and pokemon look at each other, then move in silent agreement.

landon is as unresponsive as the body he holds and the man split into two, save the occasional sob. his togekiss drags him by the back of his shirt onto his escape ride. they are anxious to move before reinforcements come.

the trio glide into the fog, though only one carries another all three hold the weighty burden of survival. the body in landon's arms falls into the water with a soft splash.
