Wild thread: Shoal Cave

Once upon a time, people had to physically come to the cave's entrance to check whether the tide was low enough or high enough to reach whichever path they wanted to venture on. Tide clocks were created some time later, which eased some of the burden, though not entirely.

Now, she only needs to check the Mossdeep Nature app on her smartphone to calculate the exact time she needs to arrive to climb down to the Shoal Cave's one and only ice floor.

Erin steps off her mantine with grace very unlike that of her first time surfing, not too long ago. They say practice makes perfect, and that's never been more true than with the ambitious young woman.

The water's receded to the point she doesn't need her water pokémon to advance farther. She returns the mantine to her pokéball, and turns to look at a face until then unknown to her.

sirius has been in dire need of something familiar. pleasant. training has progressed smoothly, but vanna isn't blind to the way he eyes every body of water they pass. the way he gets testy when they're too far inland.

there's still a feral spark in him, maybe it'll be there forever, and it needs to be fed at least every once in a while if he's to keep cooperating. so upon reaching lilycove she opts for something they can all benefit from: island hopping.

the waters of hoenn are vast and populated by all kinds of small islands and settlements. not to mention pokemon. a bit of a break from dry land could give the golduck a moment to catch his breath and vanna a chance to train in -- quite literally -- new waters.

they're on day three of this venture when she catches sight of a cave. she pulls back on his shoulders with her hands before pointing it out to him and he gets them there quick enough. it's not until she's dismounting that she sees another person had the same thought.

"yeah, i guess so."

she responds to the stranger's question, lifting a pair of goggles from her eyes before wringing out her hair.

"saw it from the water and just figured i'd check it out."

she continues without really looking at the other woman. instead, peeking over her should to make sure sirius is getting out of the water without issue.

Erin blinks a couple times, disconcerted at the level of care she receives from the stranger—or, rather, the lack of it. There's nothing directly rude about her answer, and Erin isn't particularly interested in what a stranger could think of her, but she sure isn't used to being disregarded.

She enters the cave after the girl and her golduck, and immediately realizes it's way larger than anything she had anticipated, going against all commonly accepted geological assumptions regarding sea caves.

Already she can tell that it was the right decision to take the time to come here, rather than import a specimen of ninetales from Alola. She just hopes she can make it back before the tide rises again.

She flicks another of her pokéballs open, allowing an aggron to take up the job Erin's recently recalled mantine previously had. An aggron may not be the fastest mount out there, but it's definitely better than traversing the cave on foot. He lifts her up to his shoulder.

Erin would have been perfectly content leaving the girl behind and going ahead with just her pokémon, but Avalon is a lot more gentlemanly than that. She watches silently as the aggron offers his other shoulder to her.

Whether or not she accepted the offer, they'd be well on their way down the cave when they spot a pair of wild pokémon.

vanna's acknowledgement of the woman after their initial exchange of words is little to none. first her attention is on sirius as he gets out of the water (making sure nothing unsavory follows him up) and then it's put on the cave -- her reason for getting out of the water at all.

walking through the entrance she's surprised at its size. it's not uncommon for caves to look smaller on the outside than they are in truth, but this one really is something.

she has no app to let her know when the tide is in or out, and doesn't know enough about the cave to understand that's even a factor. all she sees is an interior several times the size of its exterior.

"wow."

she speaks softly, eyes wide as she walks further into the cavern. her wet, bare feet slap against the ground and the swim trunks that poke out from under her rain poncho squish with the movement.

the view is enchanting enough to keep her ignorant to the action behind her. it's not until sirius is staring daggers at the aggron that she even realizes it's there. she's admittedly slow to accept its extended hand.

". . . yeah, i guess?"

she answers the silent question with all the confidence a random pokemon deserves before stepping onto its hand and allowing herself to be lifted to its shoulder. her golduck remains on the ground, looking mildly agitated by the whole exchange.

"hey! steady."

she calls down from her new perch and he calms somewhat. her words aren't as effective as a gentle touch but they, at least, make sure sirius doesn't stir up any unneeded conflict.

So slow. Had she been standing on the ground, her feet would be impatiently tapping on it. Lucky for both her aggron and her heels, the cold seeping through from the depths of the cave take preponderance over her impatience.

Her chandelure is called out to both light up their way and keep them guarded from hypothermia.

"Well? Is your golduck hopping on too or not?"

[break][break]

Avalon moves. Erin initially thinks he's moving forward, ready to explore the cave. She's proven wrong when she spots an ugly jynx and a less ugly piloswine. "Whis," she says, calling her chandelure to action.

Will-o-wisp

is another name for the flames adorning the chandelure's arms. They hover on his fingers, rise ever so slightly, and circle around the half-ghost, half-fire pokémon before being thrown in the ice duo's direction.

The attack would be enough to warm it up to the point it's feel itchy all over, if not to directly burn its fur away. The latter would be rather unfortunate, after all, for a pokémon the young woman had set her eyes on.

Neither of them is happy about being attacked, as one may understand. A double blizzard is coming their way. Avalon shifts into a

protective

stance, but Erin wouldn't be letting the ice pokémon get away with their attack. "Push it back.
Inferno
," she orders the chandelure.

[break][break]

The fire is so strong it starts to pour over to their side, but so is the collective blizzard. The moves end up cancelling each other, and only a thin layer of melting snow reaches Avalon's feet. He can't do much about it without putting the girls in danger's way, so he only

roars

at the threat.

Erin places a hand on the aggron's head, steadying him. "Let Whis deal with it."

New flames spring up to life on the chandelure's thin arms, bigger and warmer than before. They're not their usual purple this time. A warm, reddish orange bursts out and fires off, aimed at the piloswine. It's a beautiful

flame burst

She doesn't see the jynx anywhere and assumes it's either ran away or bothering the girl's golduck. Either way, Erin takes out an empty pokéball to toss at the burned pokémon. So much for ensuring its safety.

the warmth of the chandelure is more than welcome. the waves of heat its lanterns give off put a damper on shivers that had begun to set in and the goosebumps on her wet skin that accompanied them.

the stranger asks about sirius and she shrugs.

"unlikely."

once again she speaks without looking at the one she's speaking to, eyes instead focused on her partner below. sirius's agitation -- previously pointed at the aggron -- is now aimed deeper into the cave. following his gaze she finds his targets.

for a moment vanna's ready to start giving orders, but she's quickly reminded she's not the only trainer here. it's kind of nice actually. she resigns herself to a spectator role.

"sirius, steady!"

the golduck is bouncing about restlessly. he's used to being allowed to run in, or at least having a direction or two thrown his way, but this time vanna can't risk it.

she doesn't know how fast and loose her chance companion is. she doesn't want sirius running headfirst into a wayward fire blast or something.

her worries are legitimized by what follows. large moves thrown against each other violently -- a raw power struggle.

"excessive . . ."

she murmurs to herself. from her place on the outside she can't help but feel like there was wasted effort here. if the inferno could beat back two blizzards why not open with it? she can't argue against results, though.

the piloswine is knocked out and the jynx looks exhausted by all the heat it's had to put up with. it makes a move for sirius, but it's clear from the moment it comes stumbling up who's going to win.

several ice punches are met by defensive fury swipes from the golduck.

"push it back!"

it's tired, vanna's sure one good hit will have it running. it tries to throw sirius with a psychic, but his feet are barely off the ground before he counters with a hydro pump.

the jynx stumbles back, its concentration broken, and once it realizes its partner is no longer on the field it runs.

"good boy!"

vanna shouts down to sirius, who trembles in place. he wants to chase it down but he knows better. it's nice to know she doesn't have to be there to restrain him anymore.
