though it all had been only a joke to play along with him, his answer plants a tiny seed of worry in her head. there's too much noise in that mind of hers to really tell what goes on in it, but a good half of her thoughts or more are screaming danger. vera can't believe she didn't ask this sooner.

"why? what's wrong with your id?"

the longer she waited, the more pokémon she'd have to fight against if things went south. vera is still hoping it doesn't come down to it, but a league member has to always be prepared.

"do you at least have a name?"

she doesn't notice the little shinx walk up to her, caught up in all that tension. she looks down and allows herself the time to pick it up while the new impasse with the young man reaches its conclusion. "hey there, boy," she whispers in his ear, fingers running through the shinx's fur.

Leonardo shrugs. He doesn't want to show it to her, but he supposes after he's gone and demanded hers a little while ago, it's only fair that he return the gesture.

It's escaped him for the longest time because he doesn't tend to flash it when he walks like everyone else at work seemed to do. Leonardo only used it to enter and exit labs. He really should have his picture reshot for it.

The wild sandslash has the decency to wait for introductions to be over before sweeping into the scene. It's rolled itself into an ice ball that, had it touched any of them, would likely be deadly. The huge ice shards on its back aren't made of ordinary ice, he knows. They're hard as steel and sharpened like the blades of a knife.

Leaving it out in the wild would pose a considerable threat.

"Garchomp. Same tactic."

Trapping the alolan sandslash in another sand tomb proves as hard as it had been with the lairon. That is to say, it wasn't hard at all. The sandslash hasn't tried digging holes under the ground yet, which is a relief. It shrinks at the ground-type attack until its sharp claws retract. That's when Leonardo tosses the pokéball at it.

his name matches. so does his picture, even though leonardo really wasn't lying when he said the picture wasn't very flattering. vera laughs again at how endearingly goofy this serious young man had turned out to be. it's really adorable. her eyes continue south and linger on a specific line of the id.

"applied physics department," she reads aloud, the name vaguely familiar. wasn't that the name of the team that had moved in next to hers a month or so ago? honey-colored eyes light up in recognition. "that's right next to my lab!"

the shinx in her arms whines. vera turns her attention to him, worried that something may have happened to it despite him being literally guarded by her. "what's wrong, buddy?" a quick visual inspection reveals nothing wrong, but the frown is evident on its cute little face.

vera hums in thought. "are you hungry?" she asks, and the minun hanging on top of her shoulder butts in as if she'd been talking to her the whole time. she

the shinx, before looking up to stare at vera with the same big puppy eyes that the shinx is staring at her with. vera laughs. "are you both hungry?"

she searches her pockets for snacks. it is one of vera's quirks, the fact she cannot leave her apartment without some sort of sweetened goodies. today's haul seemed to be berry bars. three for the three pokémon, and then some more.

vera crouches down next to the pokémon as they eat. she has a treat for leonardo's garchomp, too, should he decide to accept it. one of her hands runs over the shinx's head, petting it. "did you like it? there's more from where that came from, if you wanna join the team." vera extends her hand for a high-five.

Now that she mentions it, Leonardo does vaguely recall there being a chemistry-focused team working at the lab right next to his back in HQ. What an odd way to finally meet each other.

A durant passes by while they eat, but it doesn't look too aggressive and Leonardo doesn't want to interrupt their pokémon's meal. He lets it go.

"the boys have to wait 'til our boss leaves the lab before they can play a-ha," she laughs, amused and mortified all at the same time. she always thought the walls were thicker than this. seems not. hopefully nobody at leonardo's lab hated them for it. "is it that loud?"

vera smiles when the garchomp sits down next to her new babies. the dragon may be huge and intimidating compared to the electric types, but sitting down like that it seemed as amiable as any other. "what's his name?" she asks, before turning to the pokémon leonardo was already pointing her to.

this time, the ginger doesn't have to do much in terms of convincing the pokémon to come with her. it knows the minun she'd found only moments ago. they seem to be really close friends, too—maybe even a couple, judging by the sweet, intimate

when the minun offers half its berry bar to the plusle, vera gives them one more to even the numbers, and that seems enough for the plusle to decide she's a nice human.

Leonardo doesn't laugh, but the cheer in the woman's voice manages to bring a smile to his face. It stays there while he scans the area ahead and his eyes settle on a shinx.

The comment is meant as a tease that she wouldn't be given enough time to answer to. Another question, more serious than the last but only slightly so, follows immediately after.

Leonardo doesn't have a strong opinion against or in favor of the band, himself. Pop is okay. Pop from that decade was okay too.

Earlier, he'd missed his chance to capture the shinx that ended up joining Miss Lindt. Now that she already has one, he doesn't think she'd argue against him taking this one.

The shinx comes in with a crunch, to which Garchomp answers with another perhaps deadlier crunch, followed by a sand tomb that would leave the shinx blinded until Leonardo tossed a pokéball at it.

genuine worry washes over her body at leonardo's first impression after her tale. normally, she wouldn't worry too much about taking newly met people as confidantes for trivial details like what playing music after her boss left the lab should be, and yet this time it's not so trivial because the young man literally works in the lab nextdoors.

just as soon as it came, it passes. the sigh that escapes her lips is too long for the amount of time she kept the air in her lungs.

"a-ha is a classic, but i'll admit i'm more fond of more recent music. ambient, new-age, electropop..." vera turns to him, a finger resting against her lips as if to shush him, the would-be threat of telling on her gone and a joke placed in its stead. "don't tell the others."

when she turns her eyes ahead, vera sees something she hadn't been expecting.

"what are you doing out of your pokéball already, girl? were you hungry? did you want another berry bar?" the woman relinquishes the treat easily, petting the pokémon and pressing the button of a pokéball to allow her in, oblivious to the fact that this flaaffy was indeed a different flaaffy from the one she'd befriended earlier.

Leonardo had been alert, watchful despite not always being able to rely on his sight. Five pokémon now had come to the woman willingly, without putting up any fight.

It's a curious thing, what she manages to do in this way.

"They all like you."

He's not exactly envious of the skill, as he prefers the more traditional battle as a way to capture wild pokémon. A traditional battle would be what he tried on the approaching aegislash.

It comes at them, or rather at the alolan graveler trying to find a savior in them, with a swift slashing attack, which his Garchomp luckily manages to catch with both hands. They struggle for a moment, neither of them giving in, until Garchomp goes the extra mile and shoves the aegislash to the floor.

The aegislash's attempt to get up fails when Garchomp proceeds to step on it, forcing all of his weight onto the steel type. Leonardo tosses the pokéball before it can fight back.

vera blinks at leonardo's comment. she's never thought pokémon to be particularly attached to her. she's never thought of her way of approaching wild pokémon as particularly different or outstanding, either. looking down at the alolan graveler, though, it's hard to dismiss the thought.

"do you like me, sweetie? is that so?" she asks the pokémon, her hands reaching down to each side of its face.

looking at it straight in the face proves to be a hard task. the pattern in which the rock on its face compressed over the years makes it look like a grumpy old man with big, bushy eyebrows. an extra pair of lines next to its eyes add on to the illusion, and everything together makes vera giggle.

"i like you too," she decides, nodding in agreement with... herself. she smiles and extends a hand to it. "wanna be friends?"

after placing the alolan graveler inside a pokéball of its own, she turns to leonardo. "my pokémon are all my friends, so i suppose they ought to like me. i'd be worried if they didn't." a minute of silence passes during which vera just watches him. "what's your approach? i do think your garchomp likes you as well."

Leonardo doesn't have anything to say to that. He considers his pokémon friends too, but he has to wonder if the feeling is mutual in all cases. With Metagross and Scolipede, for sure. With Alakazam, the connection is difficult to describe, but Leonardo supposes he would be his dear friend as well.

Leonardo looks at him as if trying to decide if he wants to ask him something or not. Ultimately, the decision would be to not ask.

He simply nods and lets silence fall between them. For him, it's comfortable. He's not used to talking much. He's not even sure what he'd want to say either way.

The two new pokémon he catches glimpses of are left alone. An aron and bronzong only passing by. They don't seem like a threat, nor do they look like a pokémon Leonardo would be interested in.

silence. vera doesn't like silence. it reminds her of her father's house and of a childhood spent alone. it reminds her of life before alric. so, as she's done countless times before, vera opts to fill the silence with mindless chatter.

"do you come down here often?" she asks. for some reason, vera can actually imagine leonardo scaring away multiple trainers just the way he'd scared her when they met. as far as her own experience goes... "it's my first time in new mauville and i have to admit it's a lot darker and emptier than i expected."

vera's mental picture of new mauville used to be one of postmodern architecture and luxury. fancier even than mauville hills. it's no wonder, too: last time she heard of new mauville, it was an ambitious real estate project where her father had obviously pre-purchased a property.

years later—today, that investment could only be considered uncollectible debt.

"i do like the new mauville, though. a lot more fresh air up there." at least, the indoor city has more fresh air circulating in it than this abandoned one does.
