"say 'hi' to stormy, chikorita."

the pokemon appeared slightly bashful when confronted with a face that was entirely new, his mistress's gentle encouragements doing little to soothe that random spike of anxiety that resulted in him hiding behind her leg.

"stormy, this is chikorita. he's my meganium's son," she said, smiling fondly at the nervous pokemon. "he's old enough to start his training now - so i thought bringing him out here would make for a good enough start."

the pair and their respective pokemon had only just encountered one another; the meeting having been pre-arranged by text message and voice chat some days ago. cait had insisted upon it, her schedule free enough for her to spend a handful of hours by stormy's side.

"thanks for coming out here, by the way. i've been wanting to do this for a while now. but you know how busy i've been, lately."

the weather was good enough for a fair bit of training - and there was no talk of rocket being about - so they could both enjoy the climate and relax while doing it.

Stormy was smiling widely, ear to ear, at the adorable little green plant Pokemon. He was downright adorable, and best of all, he was one of Cait's Pokemon. That obviously meant that he was something special.[break][break]

When the tiny creature would duck behind Cait's leg to hide, clearly overcome by anxiety, Stormy would wink at him before standing back to her full height. While the Chikorita was bashful and shy, her own Torchic was the opposite. The little fire-type would chase after her new 'friend', intent on meeting him, whether he wanted to meet her or not.[break][break]

"Be patient, Torchic, don't wanna scare him, do you?"[break][break]

She chastised, clicking her tongue a little bit in disapproval. The tiny chick would pout, clearly put off by being told what to do, but would otherwise return to Stormy. She would kick her feet though, puffing up her chest and kicking up some dirt in the process.[break][break]

"Yeah, absolutely! I love hanging out with you, Cait. I'm always here when you finally get around to calling."[break][break]

Another wink, indicating she was teasing. Truth be told though, she hadn't heard much from the Mauville gym leader. Communication went both ways though, and Stormy had to admit she had been neglecting to text her, too. She herself had been preoccupied with seeing Alex and taking care of her gym. For the past couple of weeks she had been diligently training and strengthening her team.[break][break]

It wouldn't be long before she accepted challenges.[break][break]

"It's nice to finally get out and get some real, fresh air. I have to admit, even I grow a little tired of ash and smoke."[break][break]

"i guess he gets his temperament from his daddy," cait remarked. "meganium's been a firecracker ever since i caught her from the wild."

the woman appears amused by the pokemon's antics, her chikorita releasing a frightful squeal as his fire-type counterpart pursued him. once the torchic had been instructed not to pester, he remained pressed against his mistress's leg; left a quivering and tearful mess.

"let's get going then," she said, grinning. "we should work on training these two up."

cait led the little group deeper into the route, appearing to be in high spirits as she happily chattered away with the fire-type expert.

"i've heard things have been real peaceful over at lavaridge. it's the same on my side, too. rocket's been real quiet as of late."

yet their obvious lack of activity had made her nervous. the phrase 'too quiet' was one she used often nowadays and she had increased her respective city's manpower because of it. arranging the patrols and ensuring that everyone was making their rounds was a bit of a headache; but she felt as though it was absolutely necessary.

"oh! a mr. mime."

the pokemon was casually leaning against a tree, appearing unperturbed by the sight of the humans and their pokemon as his gaze slid toward them.

"go get 'em, chikorita."

chikorita proceeded to not 'go get 'em' and instead continued to cower away behind his mistress's leg. the wild pokemon noticed the grass-type's behavior and smirked before sauntering out of view.

"maybe next time then," cait muttered, a slight frown on her face.

Stormy laughs a little bit at Cait's comment, her gaze sliding from the bashful Chikorita who seemed absolutely terrified to interact with Torchic, to the spitfire little chicken herself.[break][break]

"You thought Meganium was a firecracker? I think that Torchic here might compete for that spotlight."[break][break]

While the pair of them continue along the path and Torchic is left to her own devices, thankfully not in the face of her other starter counterpart, Stormy is directed to a conversation regarding Lavaridge. She smiles, genuinely happy to think on the topic for a moment.[break][break]

"Yes, it has been peaceful. I kind of prefer it that way, even if having nothing to do is... boring. No rocket activity means everyone is safe."[break][break]

Like Cait, however, Stormy was also a little anxious about Rocket's lack of appearance. She herself had been regularly patroling the city - that being made much easier with the help of Charizard, and several helpful citizens who didn't mind the extra work of securing the entrances to Lavaridge.[break][break]

For the most part though, she wasn't too concerned about Rocket invading a volcano town. It just seemed like it would be too much effort to try and break through defenses, let alone effectively take over.[break][break]

Cait's sudden breakthrough of information regarding a Mr. Mime paused her train of thought. Torchic seemed to have found her own opponent on the other side of the path. The tiny, flightless bird was quite tickled to find she couldn't get up the trunk of the tree to pick a fight with a tittering Fletchling.[break][break]

"Looks like Torchic's met her match. Things that can fly."[break][break]

Stormy would glance between the immobile Chikorita and the Mr. Mime, who promptly sauntered off after not being attacked.[break][break]

Torchic, on the other hand, would continue to berate and chirp and kick at the base of the tree, to which the poor, confused Fletchling would soon be absorbed by a stray pokeball.[break][break]

"Maybe the next one, Torchic."[break][break]

the next pokemon to catch her eye was a wobbuffet; unfortunately it made for a poor choice when it came to pokemon that chikorita had a chance of defeating in battle. they were deceptively powerful from the woman's perspective; the blue blob more than capable of defeating the bashful grass-type.

"it's okay, baby boy. we'll keep looking."

she had been advised against babying her pokemon at this stage, but she couldn't help but grow weak when confronted by the grass-type's wide-eyed gaze. it took everything within her not to scoop him up and her fondness for both young pokemon and human children caused her to remain patient toward chikorita.

'he's lucky his mama's not around,' she thought. 'she wouldn't stand for it..'

"i'm use to sticking to one place," cait admitted. "it's not too bad - especially when there's so much work to do."

both her pokemon and her city kept her busy; which meant she didn't mind remaining stationary despite having grown accustomed to traveling.

"i think when we take back slateport i'll be less busy," she said. "getting our port back will do us all some good."

Stormy can't help but watch Cait with some degree of fascination and horror. Stay in one place? That sounded... boring and lonely.[break][break]

"I can't even fathom sitting back in one place. I need to be out there, doing stuff, exploring, seeing new things, experiencing everything that I possibly can. This gym leader thing is just another step towards that. It's a new perspective. But I'm not going to let myself become stuck in one place, that isn't who I am."[break][break]

Truth be told, though, Lavaridge had been nothing but excitement. She was learning new things about the town daily, she was exploring the mountains and caverns. She was building a life for herself in the quaint little city. But it was because she was getting so comfortable that she continued to take one step backward. She didn't like comfortable.[break][break]

Torchic was soon left behind, briefly, while the pair of humans passed by a Wobbufet. It seemed to stand there idly, facing no particular directon and appearing asleep. Or wide awake staring into nothing. Regardless, Torchic was appalled that the Chikorita had passed by on such an easy opponent, and looked after her group.[break][break]

Hurrying to catch up, she was quickly directed to the sky because of a shadow. It crept up on her rapidly, growing larger and larger as whatever it was flew lower and lower to the ground. Stormy would glance back just in time to see a Xatu dip low overtop of her Torchic, narrowly missing the little tuft of feather on her head.[break][break]

Unfortunately for the little fire chick, the Xatu had no intention of staying to visit or battle, and was gone just as quickly as it appeared. Dejected, Torchic would kick up some dust with her talons and eventually rejoin the group.[break][break]

"it's not all that bad," cait said. "but i can see why'd you say that. going from traveling frequently to going mostly stationary can be a bit much at times."

she dealt with that itch to travel by occasional taking on missions or distracting herself by tucking into her work. there was always something to be done around the city of mauville and that paranoia of being absent if rocket were to make a move was ever present; even now.

'i can't let them reach lavaridge. i can't let them have a direct route to stormy's city.'

cait cared dearly for her fire-type counterpart, deriving an immense amount of joy from her company.

'she already lost one home,' she thought, determined. 'i'm not about to let her lose another.'

"c-chik," her pokemon squeaked.

she snapped out of her thoughts as her grass-type reacted to the presence of a happiny. the creature looked harmless enough, but the stout grass-type wasn't at all convinced by its soft exterior.

"let bulbasaur handle this one, chikorita."

perhaps seeing someone who was both familiar and his age would make for an appropriate form of encouragement.

"saur!"

once the seed pokemon emerged from his respective capsule he'd happily greet whomever was present before facing his pink and egg-toting foe.

"use take down, bulbasaur!"

the pokemon charged upon his short legs, surprisingly fast despite his stature.

She felt immediate regret and embarrassment after she'd said what she'd said. Suddenly, after hearing it again in her head as a memory, she felt saddened on her choice of words. She also worried that Cait had misunderstood due to her lack of filter.[break][break]

"I just meant that I'm restless. I feel trapped sometimes, like I'm too weak to protect my home.. again."[break][break]

If she was being honest with herself, she hadn't really been bored in the way she was suggesting. Lavaridge had a lot of issues and complaints, lots of tasks that she had been handling. Every day she'd been out and about, working diligently to provide safety and security to her people. [break][break]

It was the fact that she felt she was doing trivial, frivolous things. Things that weren't as important - at least to her - as actively seeking to thwart and eliminate Team Rocket. For all she knew, Rocket spies were living and breathing in her town, taking advantage of her hospitality, blending in with people she trusted.[break][break]

She was desperate to accomplish more than daily errands and the rescuing of Skitty from trees. [break][break]

Chikorita's quiet voice dredged Stormy out of her gloomy thoughts just long enough for her to take notice of a rough and tumble Natu careening for her own Torchic. While Cait's newly released Bulbasaur went to take down the Happiny, Torchic was face-slammed into the dirt by the falling Natu.[break][break]

Stormy's words of encouragement fell on deaf, humiliated ears. Kicking up off of the ground with a cross squeak of anger, Torchic would whirl on her new opponent, kicking it in the face with her talons.[break][break]

Unable to suck in her pride, Torchic would furiously ignore her trainer, continuing to bat the Natu around while it continued to... sleep? Or maybe it was wishing? It was hard to tell, given that it wasn't reacting or fighting back at all.[break][break]
