it had taken several hours of research on her part to figure her way around understanding smeargle. they were curious creatures - their moveset heavily dependent on who and what they could copy. the move sketch was one that reminded her of ditto and its inherit ability to transform into the creatures it encountered. 

'but this is a little bit different,' she thought.

"let's get your education underway, boy," she chimed. 

she had only just arrived at mauville hill, eager to begin training her normal-type counterpart. 

"we don't have a lot of time but we should be able to pick up something."

her smeagle appeared unconvinced, his gaze shifting as he gave their immediate surroundings a thorough once over.

"stay with me."

the command was uttered when the gastly had slipped into view, its form hovering roughly several meters from the alerted pair. cait plucked up a single capsule from her belt before giving it a toss, a bipedal rodent emerging from its interior in a flash of light. 

"watchog," she said. "crunch." 

her pokemon eagerly rushed forward, intending to fell her foe as quickly as she could. the skirmish was brief, the gastly noticeably weaker in comparison to its brutish foe. 

"sketch, smeargle." 

the ghost-type had utilized a shadow ball despite it being ineffective against the watchog - and cait had decided to take advantage of its manifestation. 

"smear." 

her pokemon grunted as he grasped his tail and proceeded to copy the move. the gastly crumpled shortly after and watchog was returned to her capsule, a satisfied look having settled upon her mistress's freckled features. 

"let's see how well you can use that new move of yours."

"sketch, smeargle."

once again the normal-type went to work, the tip of his tail pulsating with power as it mimicked the move roost. the unfezant was eager to make use of it when confronted by cait's vikavolt, the bug's debilitating attacks resulting in repeated attempts to mend the electrical burns which littered its form.

"smear," he said, nodding.

once cait was certain the pokemon had followed through with her command she allowed for the flying-type to flee. her vikavolt was promptly returned to their respective capsule once it flew out of sight and she veered the entirety of her focus toward the normal-type. 

"that's two moves now," she said. "if we don't deal with another normal-type i'll send you out instead of the others."

"that's iron tail."

cait's eyes rounded at the sight of the furret as its tail adopted a metallic sheen. her raticiate wasn't at all pleased by the powerful strike once it was delivered upon his form, the thickly furred tail solidly impacting his midsection.

"sketch," cait said. 

the smeagle obeyed his mistress's will, his grasp upon his tail tightening as he added the attack to his growing collection of moves. 

"raticate, let it go!" 

her pokemon hissed his displeasure but remained stationary, his prominent teeth snapping at the air as he warned the furret to take advantage of his mistress's kindness and retreat. the normal-type hesitated briefly before doing so, its form soon vanishing after it had mounted a nearby hill. 

"that should be enough for now," cait said, satisfied with their progress. "we'll work on those moves of yours back home."
