there had been a lot of other steps that kyle had to undergo in order for him to reach the heart of the gym. he does not do well with caves, but he manages to survive the entire ordeal somehow.

there was no choice but to do so if he wanted another badge for his collection after all.

mutterings echo throughout the cave system as kyle traversed through it. the darkness was pierced with a flashlight at hand, something that kyle never leaves home with if he knows he was going to some cavern. even without it, he supposed he has his mightyena to guide him all the way to the other side.

the dark-type walked a step ahead of kyle. not too far that his trainer loses him in the darkness, but not too near either that he blocks every step kyle does. eventually, a bark reverberates in the air as the first signs of light come through.

"is this finally it?" he complains to no one in particular, eyes scanning around for the gym leader.

With every Pokemon out, she groomed them, waiting for challengers was a rather mundane and boring taste. She knew having the gym so tucked away was a bit of a challenge itself. However that was the point. Only those willing to past the challenges would get to challenge her.[break][break]

She heard some echoes, one was a bark, now unless one of her challengers liked to bark... Well she shouldn't judge. Likely though it was a challenger. Her Pokemon stopped their relaxing and turned towards the entrance. They heard it too.[break][break]

Being as large of a gym as it was to handle all types of Pokemon to fight compassionately, she saw her challenger before they saw her. Kyle! She said with a cheerful greeting. It was the guy from the park, the one she remembered with Firelily.[break][break]

She wasn't sure he would remember her or not, but hopefully this would be a nice battle all the same. Standing up, she had her arms spread. Pick who you want to battle.[break][break]

It wasn't playing favorites, it was how it went. Compassion, she would show it in every way possible. If it was recepucated, they would get the badge. It would see how Kyle would work for it. He had Arcanine, Leafeon, Lilligant, Terratort, HootHoot and Whimsicott to choose from.[break][break]

For a 1x1 a 2x2 or more of ailment attacks, both could withdrawl when they felt their Pokemon were doing unwell. He could do it first as well. It showed compassion and therefore could still earn him the badge. She smiled and waited for his selection, hoping he was able to get the badge, he was a compassionate person right?[break][break]

kyle did not recall his meeting with her from months back and just assumed her to be one of his old friends that somehow faded into obscurity after not being in contact for too long.

being given a choice of his opponent was a much more generous offer than most other gym leaders gave him. they usually showed their pokemon first, but giving kyle the opportunity to choose in accordance to what pokemon he brought with him was a much better option.

"uh..."

his mightyena springs forward, barking before pointing towards the arcanine. he would have considered something tamer, such as the hoothoot, though since he was going to choose the mightyena to fight with anyways, he supposed it would be fine. if he gets beaten up, it was going to be the dark-type's fault.

"i'm going for the arcanine, i guess."

he knows the theme of the gym. it was rare for him to take his time to research about a gym before challenging it, but the travel from the mainland to dewford gave him enough time to get bored and force him to do even the least entertaining thing there is.

At his reply, there was a small hesitation. Unlike Thomas who had no hesitation, she could tell Kyle didn't remember her as well she remembered him. Oh well.[break][break]

At her asking him which Pokemon he wanted, he took a moment to pick, one that his Pokemon picked for him. With a laugh, she nodded, Firelily it is. The Arcanine gave a strech before a happy yip. Jumping forward to get ready for the battle.[break][break]

Kyle agreed, which was good, as he was the actual one who wanted the badge. Had he wanted another Pokemon, she would have traded out Firelily for whomever he truly wanted to fight.[break][break]

With a nod, the rest of the Pokemon went into the perches, out of the way, when not in use during battles.[break][break]

Safely tucked away from any attacks that may go astray. Esme then put her hand out, guests first.[break][break]

This wasn't the compassion gym for nothing...[break][break]

compassion badge...

getting it has the most unorthodox way out of all the badges if kyle had to rank them based on their gimmicks. even the name of the badge showed that it wasn't one that could be obtained just through battling, like any other badges tho.

it's troublesome, but it's right up kyle's alley.

"taunt."

the mightyena enters the battlefield, greeting the arcanine not with a friendly bark, but with a scowl. unfriendly eyes would intimidate the opposition, showing off his fangs that would contradict the kind of value the gym tries its hardest to promote.

the display would end with a snarl and a shout from the dark-type, transitioning smoothly from intimidation to provocation, inciting the arcanine to retaliate with a damaging move.

kyle doesn't know if the gym leader is exempt to her rule, but kyle can deal with it regardless, or so he hoped to.

At the attack of taunt, Esme gave a giggle, not the reaction most would have in this situation. Though she could see what Kyle was likely trying to do. Not many liked how she ran her gym, so used to fighting, they wanted to fight. She wouldn't do so.[break][break]

Stuck only being able to use her more brutal attacks Firefly stood, dealing with the intimidation and provocation combo. Firefly! Sit for two turns. At hearing Esme's voice she flicked her ears a few times to shake off the strange feelings and sat like commanded.[break][break]

She then looked at Kyle, I hope you have more than taunt, or this may never end. She said with a friendly smile.[break][break]

As the Gym Leader of course she had to set a standard, how much of a hypocrite would she be if she just went around K.O.ing other Pokemon? So her Arcanine waited for the next move the Mightyena may use.[break][break]

Oh and I hope you know another status ailment. She said with a almost fox like grin. It may seem like the easiest of gyms, but unless you knew how to defeat it, you would easily lose by default by the rules. She had every right to kick you out, and even if you quote - unquote won. If it was by a KO she would have you kicked out for being uncompassionate. Hardly worthy of her badge.[break][break]

he scratches the back of his head on the response. he thought that taunt would be the solution for the gimmick she has for the gym, though she still hasn't ended the 'battle', if one could still call it that.

"you already can't fight back in this battle without going offensive," he points out. "why would you want to torment your pokemon with status conditions?"

he whistles, calling for his mightyena. the high-pitched sound causes him to glance behind him, the same sour expression still present in the canine's face as he does. there was a moment of silence before the two of them, before kyle raises a brow.

"keep taunting, delta."

it probably won't do anything other than provoke the arcanine even further, and maybe keep the itch to move against her trainer's orders going. kyle doesn't really care that much until he gets a response from the gym leader anyways.

lowering his front legs with his butt up high, delta gave a sharp bark. tail was wagging and a certain devious expression on his face would give the fire-type a suggestive look, tempting her to make a move, or at least, play with him.

At Kyle trying to point out that she needed to attack, and asked why she would want to torment her Pokemon with status conditions. She gave a peaceful smile.[break][break]

And I ask you this, why do you want to brutalize your Pokemon with full on attacks, that very well kill them? I never planned on fighting back. She said with a soft shrug of her shoulders.[break][break]

As he whisled calling to his mightyena, who took attention to Kyle, the command was to keep taunting.[break][break]

Esme just sighed and shook her head, Had you used a proper status ailment, I may have called the battle, compassion for my Pokemon, and by not harming my Pokemon with a full on attack you showed compassion. So far you are stalling.[break][break]

She didn't even had to say to the Arcanine who ignored the taunt completely, with a yawn and turning around a few times and with a thump laid down.[break][break]

If she attacks you, what kind of example am I setting? Keep trying. I have nothing better to do today as a Gym Leader. Though I do have to return home and I will have to kick you out eventually. She said with a smile of pity.[break][break]

"kill? are you stupid? when you engage in a trainer battle, do you always have an intent to kill?"

he breaths, collecting his composure for a moment.

"a gym battle is supposed to showcase a trainer's skill. fights are the most direct method of doing that, are they not?"

she tries to be intimidating and condescending, but all it does is portray herself in the wrong light with kyle. the word 'brutalize' in her statement elicits the idea that she's close-minded. he doesn't deal with those well.

"another question. does this gym have a direct objective or is the result of the challenge entirely subjective?"

the mightyena stares back at him after the arcanine's surprisingly lack of autonomy. kyle answers with a shrug, giving the dark-type free reign within the battle.

the dark-type's stance changes completely, ending all unnecessary actions. his eyes fill with blood lust, like a true hunter that he is. legs started sprinting towards the arcanine, strides full to cover the distance as quickly as possible.

the mightyena stops abruptly just in front of the fire-type. delta haughtily exhales air from his nose towards the larger canine's face as eyes locked onto the others. a faint glow, unnoticeable to most, would mark the mightyena's eyes as he activated swagger and attract on the arcanine.

Esme simply shrugged, Such aggression. That has to be the stupidest statement I have heard said to me in this gym. I don't battle besides inside this gym. I am not the one who wants to kill. If you don't like the rules. You are free to go. I know I am not the only one with special rules, some that are annoying. Leaning against Terra, she then continued to see if the Mightyena would continue to taunt.[break][break]

It seemed Kyle tried to compose himself, before tried to tell her how to run a gym. She rolled her eyes, I am not the one that feels I need to showcase my skills. If you need to do that, either go to another gym, or find a random person to fight. Or is someone not happy they can't just brute their way to success and have to actually think to win? She asked with a deadpan voice. She was getting sick of these people who just wanted to blast through her gym, instead of actually playing by the rules she put up. It was pointless to have rules if people didn't follow them.[break][break]

At his question she smiled, It is a little bit of both. Your Pokemon get harmed as you show off their skills. Do you even care about them? The point of the compassion badge is that you have compassion. You think the concept is difficult. The part that is subjective is when you pick what you send your Pokemon to do and I can to see if the Pokemon seems in distress. You'd be surprise how many Pokemon hate their owners. With a sigh she shrugged again, Ultimately it is a gym battle, so it is objective, I will lose, so everyone will win one way or another. But they never truly will win the badge.[break][break]

She then went silent. He got his answers and then some. She got a feeling he didn't want to talk to her in truth. Shame, she remembered Kyle as being someone else. Maybe something changed him. She looked at her Arcanine who looked rather drunk, and charmed at the same time. Well it seemed the Mightyena had more compassion then Kyle. After a moment in her adoration and confusion a large tongue ran up the Mightyena. With a soft smile at the reaction between the two. She walked over to the both of them.[break][break]

Midnight! The HootHoot flew over to her, and landed on her arm. Into her outstretched hand, a shiny metal was placed. With a flick of her arm, the HootHoot went to rest on Terra. Here, give this to your trainer.She said to the Mightyena. Placing the badge on the Pokemon's head. IF Kyle had trained this dog Pokemon, then it would do just that, with a great balance. She then turned around. Lilli, come over, we need to help Tigerlily snap out of it. At being called, the little flower bounced towards the large dog.[break][break]

She looked over her shoulder, It seems your Mightyena knows more than you. Shame. Well enjoy your badge or don't. Although I think technically your Mightyena won it without your help. Bye Kyle.[break][break]
