he was being escorted to where the battle was to take place. they went past corridors as if he was getting a tour, and kyle got distracted as such. the architecture he was seeing was different from what he was used to after all.

it wasn't long, but soon enough, kyle reaches the area where the battle was supposed to happen.

"this looks nice," he compliments.

he approaches the pool and peers into the water. he wasn't sure if the layout was natural or not, but he takes note of the motif. very cute, he judges it. it wasn't tiled or anything, which he had expected. on hindsight, having it tiled was bad design considering the nature of what takes place in the pool.

he looks up from the pool, looking up to the gym leader. "so, when do we start?"

"Isn't it?" She replies. No corners were cut in the creation of the gym. It was made not only as a gym facility, but as a work of art as well.

Alice plucks a pokemon from her pocket and lightly tosses it up into the air. Only for it to fall back down and the cycle to repeat itself. "Well we're both here now, aren't we? Just whenever you've picked your pokemon, I suppose." With her final words she broke the ball's cycle by clicking it, releasing a blastoise into the water.

"It'll just be a standard one on one today, basically the same as before the league's regulations here. We didn't have any riddle nonsense before, thankfully."

「Blastoise is released!」

no riddles or anything fancy was good. the one versus one only made it better. it meant they can finish sooner and get a badge on his profile in under four pages.

"nice."

he plucks out his dragalge's pokeball, releasing it into the water to match the blastoise. the dragon quickly finds its way to the depths of the pool, situating itself into the water easily.

"toxic."

poison was released into the water, spraying and shooting in a jet towards the blastoise much like squid ink.

As blastoise swam into the depths of the pool to match dragalge it found its vision blurred and its skin stinging from the secreted poison. With each second that passes the pain grows worse.

When its vision clears blastoise's cannons lock in on the dragalage. Unable to hear its trainer so far below the surface it proceeds to take the battle into its own hands. Light begins to emanate from the two cannons atop its shell, which adjust position as the poison pokemon slowly moves in the water. Simultaneously both cannons fire, releasing the pent up light of flash cannon.

「Blastoise used flash cannon!」

the dragalge tenses at the sight of the incoming attack. instinct tells it to camouflage as a defense mechanism. the dragalge's dark pigmentation immediately blends with the waters, and along with it, changing its type to water-type.

the defense mechanism does nothing to keep it out of harm's way. the flash cannon finds its way to the dragalge, hitting it and knocking it back. its new typing lessens the damage it takes from the attack due to its advantage at the very least.

now colored in the same hue as the water, the dragalge swims away from the blastoise to blend perfectly into the background.

When the bubbles clear blastoise saw no sign of the dragalge. It was as if it vanished into thin air. Swimming in circles produce no clues as to where it was in the pool, assuming it was still there.

With no flash of red light nor a sign from its trainer to return blastoise assumes that the kelp pokemon is still in the pool. Lying in wait. Past experience with a certain alcoholic's vikavolt taught it hitting a fast moving target was hard enough. But an invisible target? That's near impossible.

With no viable offensive moves at its disposal the shellfish pokemon did what came naturally. It withdraws into its shell and sinks to the floor of the pool. Two could play at this waiting game.

「Blastoise used withdraw!」

the waiting game would benefit the dragalge with toxic in effect. all he had to do was to wait for it to worsen. the dragalge waits in the background. if the blastoise isn't making a move, so would he.

he made a move though, albeit a defensive one.

the dragalge released a smokescreen into the water, turning the clear waters murky to aid with the visual impairment. the colors of the dragalge would adapt to the change.

The poison crept through Blastoise's body with each passing moment. A crushing pain began on the left side of its skull, the first of the poison's many side effects.

Cold reptilian eyes dart towards the spread of smoke. The only movement in the whole pool. Slowly withdrawing itself from its shell Blastoise prepares its cannons to fire once more. They click into position, aim directed roughly where the smokescreen began. Light fires from the aquatic cannons in the form of flash cannon. It tears through the edges of the smokescreen, massively off its original target. Blastoise stumbling from the toxins threw its aim off. Its legs were numb now, unable to feel the rough floor beneath its feet.

Blastoise attempts to stay upright after its misfire. Its body shook and head throbbed. Alice's pokemon is fighting a losing battle.

the flash cannon misses. the attack clears good part of the area covered by the smokescreen where kyle's pokemon wasn't located. while it doesn't hit the dragalge, it triggers a retaliatory response from the dragon-type.

it fires off a sludge bomb at the direction of the attack and towards where the blastoise was located. blobs of poison shoot through the waters, further making the substance murky whether it hits or not as it explodes by the end of its trajectory.

the dragalge could simply wait until the poison does its job, but it gets rattled easily from attempts to attack it, especially without his trainer's presence backing him up.

Blastoise's palms are sweaty. Knees weak. Arms are heavy. There's vomit in the pool. Alice's spaghetti.

The shellfish pokemon succumbs to dragalge's poison. It courses through its body, carried by the bloodstream. Sludge masks the details of its face and impairs its already difficult breathing. With a final heavy and pained breath blastoise's vision fades to black.

The limp body begins to slowly rise to the top of the pool.

is... is it dead?

kyle stares at the clearly unconscious blastoise, walking all the way to the edge of the pool to take a closer look. he couldn't tell if it was breathing or not because of its shell, but he only hopes that maybe he won't be charged for killing someone else's pokemon with his own.

"oi. come back now."

he starts to call his dragalge from the surface. with the water getting murky from the battle and his pokemon not reacting to his voice from above the surface of the water, he starts to get worried. can't even aim his pokeball to recall him since his pokemon wasn't visible.

kyle crouches down and starts to play with the water with his hand. the motions and ripples eventually get the dragalge to come out of his camouflage and peek his head out of the water.

relief comes to him as he sees his pokemon relatively unharmed. he makes no visible action that could clue to it besides the easing of his furrowed brows.

"does this mean i win now?" he asks bluntly.

"Yes, Kyle," was Alice's reply. She glances at her blastoise for a split moment. The body hadn't moved. "Of course you can." Light flashes and blastoises body disappears, leaving ripples in the water. "Just follow me please."

She turns and sweeps herself into another room. There the badges and relevant paperwork for winners were kept.
