How was there such a thing like gold in a region like this?[break][break]

Well, to be fair there’s a lot of things that you can find in a cave… but are you serious? Real gold? That’s quite a stretch… Alexei thought to himself as he’d arrived on the Verdanturf side of the Rusturf tunnel—and was not surprised to see that there was a shitload of people making mad dashes into the cave, carrying little pans and then swirling them around carefully.[break][break]

“Yeesh, really?” he mutters to himself, softly enough so nobody can hear. He’d heard rumors that there were also wild Pokémon sleeping in the caves and they didn’t like being bloody disturbed, so… well, there was that, too. What would happen if the noise and the racket of the digging caught them unawares and woke them up?[break][break]

Abject chaos.[break][break]

All the same he made sure he was prepared for any inevitable attacks, looking over his choice of six companions before venturing into the cave.[break][break]

The moment he’d stepped in, the racket—it was like fever-pitch. People chipping away furiously at a new passageway, some were running out with those ridiculous pans, and yet others were hauling out boulders that had gotten in the way.[break][break]

Well, can’t hurt to keep an eye on them now, would it? he pondered quietly, leaning against a spot of wall where there was nobody making a loud din while looking for the elusive mineral.[break][break]

Gold.

"That's not gold, you dingus!" Francie bopped a miner on the head, a few of the miners surrounding them letting out some laughs. "That's barely even dirt! Don't waste my time thank you!"

Asked by FERNANDO SILPH, Francie was there to make sure the claim of gold didn't get too out of hand. She'd already threatened all the miners with their damn jobs if they lied to her, so this little practical joke was getting them all an extra three hours without break.

"That's it! Another one of you try and pull a fast one on me, and I'll tear the cave down and let you rot in here until Rangers get here! And they take forever given short numbers, so don't test my patience!"

A huff of air out of her lips and she was turning toward the mouth of the cave, a piece of her hair falling away from her face as she blew at it. The sight of somebody at the mouth of the cave made her blink her eyes a few times. He looked fami--

"Alexei?!" It was! Without much warning, or care, she ran over and jumped into his arms in a hug. "Ohmygodshey!"

From going to tear their balls off, to jumping in the arms of a stranger in excitement. Yep, Francie Myrtle everybody.

He could hear the uproar, and looked up from his private musing.[break][break]

There was a young lady who was standing watch over the ‘miners’, if he could call them that, and was practically threatening to collapse the entire tunnel system on them and leave them buried alive unless they squared up and got serious.[break][break]

It was so hilarious he couldn’t help but chuckle softly at the outburst.[break][break]

Of course, with the way he was positioned near the entrance of the cave, he was bound to see people heading in and out of the area so there was literally no escape. What he was not expecting, however…[break][break]

…was the fact that the young lady was someone he’d already met before! Looking up at the familiar voice, he barely had five seconds to process the incoming wall of delighted young woman, before his mind screamed at him that it was fucking Francie![break][break]

“Whoa!” he began, unable to contain his laughter at her reaction to his presence. “France, where the hell have you been?! It’s been so long,” he says with a grin on his face.[break][break]

“You’ve missed a lot of shit happening here—“ he continues, before seeing another bunch of miners running out with their ‘pans’ to see if they’d found something.[break][break]

“Gee. Mention gold once and people are all over the damn place…” he adds with a bit of a grumble.[break][break]

Clearly, some things never changed.

"Yes, well, people will be people."

Francie's words linger for only a moment before she whips around to face the miners, standing beside Alexei. She crosses her arms and furrows her eyebrows at the workers.

"There aren't any locals, thank goodness. These are all professional miners that've been hired by the league to go digging. Thanks to the Silph Company, of course. If there's gold to be found, they want their claim. All for one and one for the region or something."

Honestly she was too excited to see Alexei to even realize what she said might not have made sense.

"But I can't believe you're here! I was going to head to Tree Town here soon--" Francie interrupted herself and laughed. "Wow, sorry, 'Tree Town.' I've been hanging out with my siblings a little too much."

“Oh? From the way they were acting I thought they were locals, they were so excited. You should see the outside right now, it’s one huge bloody mess,” he begins with a sigh, tilting his head to where the entrance of the cave was.[break][break]

It isn’t until she mentions the Silph Company does he do a double-take, and for a few moments a concerned frown crosses his face.[break][break]

Silph? I’m quite dubious about them… I don’t know, but there’s something that doesn’t sit right with them. Like… there’s something that I can’t put a finger on, but at least the Councilman I’m very wary of. Borderline leery. I don’t know… he mused to himself privately, deciding to save his qualms for much later—when they weren’t in the presence of the hired help.[break][break]

“Tree Town? Hey, now that’s not a nice way to call my city,” he continues with a hint of a grin on his face. “Where have you been? Things have gotten really interesting in the time since you left. Someone else is in Petalburg’s Gym now,” he shares.[break][break]

“A lot of the leaders that you may have known in the time you were a Gym Leader have either resigned, gone missing, or their whereabouts are unknown,” he adds quietly, looking over and seeing another wheelbarrow full of rocks being taken out of the cave.[break][break]

He could overhear the chattering conversation of the miners, but he paid it no heed—he wasn’t going to meddle in their business unless some random, weird, crazy shit happened.[break][break]

At his quip about what she called the town, she simply grinned. There was no stopping how bubbly and happy she was to see that Alexei was doing well. She hadn't seen Alexei in forever, a good friend of hers, and she couldn't help but enjoy how she was doing Fernando a favor by being here and overseeing everything.

Alexei bringing up the previous Gym Leaders had Francie letting out a small sigh. Not of disappointment, but instead of contemplation.

"I know the Gym Leaders have shifted and changed, and that some have gone missing or retired. In a way, I understand. I went missing in order to go and take care of family... I had to disappear, to keep them safe." Francie glanced around at the miners, but decided they could be trusted well enough.

Besides, she dared somebody to come and threaten her family now.

"Silas threatened me. Said that if I didn't become a sort of spy for Rocket, that he would kill my family." Francie narrowed her eyes in thought. "At the time, I didn't trust my family well enough. I immediately ran home to protect them... in hindsight, they could have protected themselves just fine."
