slateport was slowly yet surely recovering from rocket's occupation; the street cleared of a vast majority of the trash and filth that had been allowed to accumulate over the past few months. cait had volunteered her services, joining the multitude of crews that aided in the restoration of the city. her mere presence bolstered morale by a decent margin, the workers pleased that a gym leader had joined them in their efforts. 

"there's a bit of loose rubble over there. let's try at scraping it all together."

her tyranitar and nidoking moved to obey, prompted into action by the verbal order. cait oversaw their work and guided them along, sprinkling praise onto the pair as they did so. 

'let's hope we finish up before midday hits,' she thought.

it was only early morning now, the sky pale and the sun out of sight.

tyranitar lifted a particularly hefty clump of cement, relocating it to the meager pile of gathered rubble. the work wasn't difficult, though she couldn't help but find it tedious. a bemused rumble escape her the moment a mime jr teetered into view, the pink pokemon contrasting harshly against the urban jungle of the upper district. she'd instruct the petite male to move on, gesturing with a claw whilst bolstering a firm tone. 

the fairy considered her for a moment before complying, deciding that there was little to no point in lingering. this section of city had been picked clean of edible goods, after all. and he'd surely find something of substance elsewhere.

it was nidoking who encountered the fairy that bore a striking resemblance to a mushroom. he discovered it as he approached a slab of cement, blinking owlishly as he realized that a pokemon was resting upon it. he considered leaving it be, but realized that it would be best if he directed the pokemon to go elsewhere. he was civil about the whole thing, though his tone remained firm as he instructed the fairy to go elsewhere. 

immediately after the mushroom waddled away without a fuss nor a fight, he'd return to lifting the hefty piece of cement.

the chatot made for an unexpected sight, cait having noticed the presence of its gaze some hours into their work. it peered down at her from a high up perch, and she originally opted to ignore it altogether. the bird would likely maintain its distance from both herself and her hefty companions after all. but it appeared to be unperturbed by the combined presence of her pokemon, relocating itself closer with each hour that came and went. 

cait eventually shifted the entirety of her focus toward the bird when it had boldly situated itself upon a perfectly intact postal box several meters away, its dark eyes fixed upon her. 

"hello?" 

she hazarded a greeting, a surge of curiosity prompting her to do so. it cocked its head to the side in reaction before echoing the word.

"hel-lo."

the young woman blinked and was suddenly reminded that chatot possessed a tongue that had been confirmed to be no different from a human's.

'it can talk,' she thought.  

"hello," she repeated. 

"hello," it replied. 

the corners of her lips tugged upwards into a smile as she tentatively made her approach. she wondered if it had a half-decent grasp on human language and decided to test out its competency for the duration of its stay. 

"what's your name?" 

she spoke slowly and the pokemon appeared to consider her words, its head cocking from side to side. 

"what's your name," it repeated. "cha-tot."

its little chest puffed up after it had formulated a sensible reply, the pokemon appearing to take pride in its intelligence.

"good," she praised, nodding her head. "very good."

what followed was a extended exchange between the pair, cait delighting in the bird's presence and compelling it to perch itself upon her offered arm. it favored her shoulder soon enough and the pair would press onward with their somewhat halted conversation; their faces alight as they enjoyed one another's company.
