He’d already been there recently, and yet here he was again.

Lars knew he was cutting it pretty close to the end of the month to come by, but a lot of things had happened and he was kept too busy for things. At least now he had some free time to visit the Safari Zone again.

The moment he saw that there were Ralts on the list, he was in for it.

While he already had a Chikorita, he also knew that there were other Pokémon that he could potentially catch and make useful in his weird-looking army. He was trying to have a multiple number of varied and assorted companions for all sorts of situations, and it was the Ralts line that had eluded him for the single longest time.

Sliding the money across the counter, he then gets four Safari Balls rolled his way. Since he traveled light, he didn’t have to stay as long in the guard check, before he was let through with an all-clear signal.

Now that he was out in the wilderness once again, he had his target clear as day: find the Ralts, secure them. And eventually train them. He didn’t know how long it would take for him to evolve them at the same time, though…

In moments he has Ro out, and he’s seated atop the hulking blue beast’s head.

“Let me know if you see something interesting,” he says as he plants himself firmly atop Ro’s flat head, and the Metagross then uses Magnet Rise in order to start traveling through the Safari Zone, tucking its four arms underneath to make things go faster.

While Ro doesn’t go too fast, a flash of blue catches his attention, and he sighs. While Heracross looks appealing, he decides to leave it alone, because it’s not what he’s after. At least, not yet anyway.

“No, Ro,” he says calmly as the Metagross makes an excited grating noise. “I know you want to go after it, but… that’s not what we’re after. I’ll let you know what is when I see them,” he says, touching the top of the blue beast’s head softly.

While he hears a grating noise of protest, he can’t argue with Lars—he knows that when his human companion says something, he means it, and so they leave the Heracross to its devices. Watching in silent awe as the thing used its horn to heft up a log and fling it over its shoulder.

Yikes.

GET! 1 of 2 Ralts acquired.

It doesn’t take too long for Ro to come to a near-stop, almost throwing Lars off his head.

“Whoa, what the hell?” he exclaims, before the Metagross sets his limbs down and makes a grating noise before raising the front-right limb and pointing not too far ahead—the moment he sees what Ro has spotted, his eyes go wide.

“Why thank you,” he adds all of a sudden, hopping down and making sure he looks presentable. The little Ralts is busy sunning itself in a patch of grass, not knowing that there was a huge, hulking Metagross and a weird human several feet away from it.

Not until Lars accidentally steps on a branch does the Ralts look up in alarm, but the Ranger quickly raises his hands.

“No, no—I’m not going to fight you… I come with food,” and with that he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a few Oran Berries before slowly rolling them in the Pokémon’s direction before staying where he stood. Watching, waiting… for a reaction.

Sensing that there was a much-bigger Pokémon, the much-smaller Ralts lets out a cry of alarm, but Lars shakes his head. “No, Ro isn’t going to hurt you. You have my word,” he says, before standing there and awaiting judgment from the Ralts.

While it’s a nerve-wracking fifteen minutes of his life, it felt like the longest time… because he knew just how… emphatically connected the Ralts line were to their potential human masters, and he didn’t want to fuck this up. Looking down, he notices that the Oran Berries are gone, and he feels a very light weight settle…in his hair.

“Wha?” he says out of curiosity, and he looks up—only to find that there’s a pair of red eyes looking down at him at this point. “Whoa, hey—uh, hello,” he says to the Ralts, poking it with one of his fingers. He hears a cooing noise in answer.

“What, more Berries? I know where to find them… you want to follow me?”

2 of 2 Ralts, now what tf is he gonna do? XD

Thankfully, this Ralts went along without getting into a violent fight. Now he wonders why the small one is pointing excitedly in a particular direction. “What? What is it?” he asks, before he suddenly feels a tingly sensation spreading through his body.

Little did he know that his first Ralts knows Teleport, and so they were whisked away from where the Metagross was waiting for Lars. Back where the big blue hulking beast was expectantly waiting for his human companion to return, he lets out a grating noise of alarm because where the hell did Lars go?!

The Ralts had taken the human somewhere, to another part of the Safari—specifically, to where this Ralts’ crush was.

Wait, what?!

Anywho…

Lars feels his feet slam into a rough patch of ground and he almost falls off-balance. Wait, how did he end up—?!

“Where did you take me?” he asks, before the Ralts points again, this time showing him that there was another of his kind nearby. From the way this one moved, he would have to take a guess…

“A girl?” he asks, and he gets a very excited nod. “What do you want me to do now?” he asks, humoring the Pokémon this one time.

After several minutes of confused yet enthusiastic gesturing, he gets the hint and begins to look for some Berries. While he’s found some, they’re not as big as the ones he brought along with him, but they would have to do. “What, same thing?”

A shake of the head.

“You want to bring this over?”

A nod from the Ralts.

“Alright, can’t stop you… go do your thing, charm her,” he says with a hint of a grin on his face. In that moment he’s reminded that he’s alone—but only because he made this choice himself. Watching the interaction unfold, he can’t help but admire the tenacity of the first Ralts he’d captured.

Gee, I’m outclassed by a Pokémon. What the hell? He thinks to himself, holding in his mirth as his Ralts feeds this other one with the Berries he was floating with his psychic energy in an attempt to show off. While one of the Sitrus berries bonked on the first Ralts’s head, the second one didn’t seem to care.

After they both had their feast, the first one Teleported back to where he was waiting, Safari Ball in hand.

“Sneaky shit,” he says with a grin as he walks over to where the now-sleeping Ralts is and drops the second Safari Ball on its slumbering figure…

Meanwhile, over at where the Metagross was waiting, Ro couldn’t help but worry if his human companion had been kidnapped. But there was something within him telling him to stay put, and that he would eventually return.

In the meantime while time passed, a little fluffy Cottonee drifted into the clearing where the Metagross was, still standing guard and patiently waiting for Lars to return with the Ralts. Noticing that the big, hulking blue beast wasn’t doing anything, the little prankster of a Pokémon decided to ever so casually plant a few Leech Seeds here and there in an attempt to slowly sap the beast of his health.

While the Cottonee was able to get away with most of it, there was a slight figure of movement that caused the Metagross to look down—and a quick Telekinesis was thrown in its direction. Letting out a squeal as she was caught, the Metagross levitated the other Pokémon to his eye level, before grating in its direction.

An attempt at Grass Whistle was summoned, however it was met with a Bullet Punch to the face—and the little Cottonee said right into the face of a reappearing Lars, whose companion Ralts had chosen the completely wrong time to return.

“What the—oof! Hey!” he half-shouts, muffled by the cottony whiteness in his face. Peeling it off, he heard Ro letting out a derisive snort.

“What? It snuck up on you?” he asks the big beast, and gets an affirmative noise in answer.

“Who told you to let your guard down?” he adds a few moments later, tapping another Safari Ball on the hapless Cottonee’s head.

Thankfully, the little troublemaker of a Cottonee goes into the beam of red light without a second thought, and now that they’re back where Ro is, the Metagross lets out an inquisitive-sounding noise. Or at least that’s what Lars thinks it sounds like, mostly directed to the Ralts perched in his hair.

“What, Ro?” he asks the big blue beast, giving one of the legs a pat. “Don’t tell me you’re getting jealous now because of him?” he teases with a smirk, before breaking out into a chuckle.

The Ralts lets out what he assumes to be a chuckling noise, and for a few moments the Metagross just stares at the two before letting out what Lars takes as a sigh.

“Gee, you were exactly like this when Alpha came into our lives, you know,” he reminds the hulking Pokémon, patting the same leg again. “You threw a shit fit for a while when he was still a Riolu. Don’t tell me you’re going to do the same with the two Ralts I have? The prince and his princess?”

The Metagross rolls his red eyes at Lars, before folding his legs in once more.

“Already? Let’s go, then,” he says, getting atop the Metagross’s head before making sure the Ralts is securely perched in his hair. “Go, then,” he adds a few moments later, and they go past a Mienfoo, busy practicing its moves on a nearby rock.

Nope, it wasn’t what they were looking for either.
