It was rare for her to get a call--[break][break]

No; it was rare for her to accept or even start a personal call, especially when she was on the job. Even when she was living her peaceful life running a small clinic, she never did set time asides for her little brother, sister, or family's disputes or matters in the grander company. The life of a doctor was taxing; the life of a head of a corporation even more vexing. Nowadays, she found little time to indulge in herself; she didn't even have time to even attempt to search for answers regarding her little brother and sister; not after they disappeared, at least. [break][break]

Her brother, though worried as she was, she knows he was capable. Her sister, on the other hand, was still missing even after the dispersing of Team Rocket. It was odd to her, and it sent alarms in her head. She found more questions arising in her mind, from the concern and worry topped with the fretting a big sister would have. Did she have the right? Especially with how out of touch she was from the family, and how little a part she played in their company. It felt like she swooped in, was called upon because there was no one else (it was exactly that, but never would those exact words be uttered from an employee's lips). [break][break]

Today, though, she was trying to find answers. [break][break]

And those answers started with a contact of her brother's who she has heard about in the news, now and then. It was more so in previous articles, but she was curious. She had tried to get into contact with him, and set up a meeting day and spot at a cafe nearby the company to speak. She made her way in, ordered a donut and some coffee, then made way to a booth by the large window. [break][break]

She waits.

he looks one more time at the notes he set up in his phone, making sure that he got the venue right. a double take later, he finally enters the establishment, swinging the door slowly, eyes studying the inside as it opens.

the regal air of a daughter of a large company makes her stand out. kyle immediately finds her among the crowd, standing out in a way that common people would be able to differentiate her from the rest. there was also the fact that he had seen her one time in alex's family pictures in his office, so it made identifying her much easier.

kyle asks a waiter for her as well, making sure he does get the right one.

he seats himself opposite to her in the booth, giving her the "good morning" only after he sat. he blanks out on what to say next, having never thought of a script before jumping in to the situation. the smile is present, his clothing much more casual than hers, and confidence was there, albeit feigned.

maybe she'll start the conversation instead before he starts to visibly sweat.

this wasn't business. [break][break]

it takes a while for her to register that in her head; it wasn't business. she managed to call someone out to ask questions regarding her brother and she had the entire thing planned out. she'd written it on a note the day before and, gods, she even tried to rehearse. yet when she sees the man sitting in front of her, she's at a loss of words. a greeting, yes. she needed to greet him, like a normal person-- like a person. she takes a deep breath and, in a poor attempt to maintain her composure, keeps a relatively stoic expression on her face. "good morning." she replies, abruptly. [break][break]

... that was a bit much, wasn't it? the blonde lowers her hands into her lap to twiddle her fingers under the table. "and you are kyle, correct?" once again, the flat, formal tone. she raises a hand to him, reaching across the table. ".. daphne. daphne stone. i believe you were familiar with my younger brother, alexander?" she asks. to calm her nerves she gently clasps her hands around the cup of coffee. "i'll start simple" she says, before taking a quick sip to warm herself up. [break][break]

"how well did you know my brother?"

her formal way of talking makes him stiffen. she gave a much more serious vibe than her brother, although he supposed that was a given since she was the older sibling, if only by a year or so.

still, the first few seconds was enough to give kyle a first impression of her.

"a friend. brings me to league meetings that are closed for cadets before i got high in the ranks. i think we can say that we're pretty close."

he leans back, raises a hand to signal a waiter, and orders his own coffee. he leans back on his seat as he waits for his drink to be brought to their table, clasping his hands together as he rests them on the table.

"any more inquiries?"

thank goodness. it'll be easier than she thought.[break][break]

he was giving her the answers she needed, even in the face of whatever pressure she might have put on him (unintentional, of course, but she can't tell at this point). she was never as gentle as her younger brother; he was always better at talking with others and easing them, than she was. but seeing him gradually adapt? she can see why her little brother chose to associate himself with someone like this. he always did have an eye for people, after all. [break][break]

a soft sigh escapes her lips - relief, she would call it - as she eases back into her seat. "that's.. good." that's good; that was very good (ignoring the embarrassment she might feel, hearing that someone else could be closer to her family than she ever was). she nods her head at his question, and returns to lean against the table. she rests her elbows against the corner of it and presses her fingers together. "did you hear any word of his departure before he left? where he was going? why?"

he was expecting this question to pop up somewhere in the conversation. the inquiry doesn't faze kyle, though he cannot say that he prepared an answer for it.

"nope. not a word, sorry. i don't often talk about personal things with him, unfortunately."

his coffee arrives: a double shot of espresso, served with nothing but its black goodness. he pauses for a moment, relishing in the smell of the freshly brewed cup. it only takes a second before he comes back to daphne, continuing the conversation.

"i was hoping to get answers too, to be honest. didn't know that even his family doesn't know."

he takes the cup close to his mouth, taking a sip immediately. the temperature scorches him, forcing him to get the cup away from him and bite the end of his tongue. he lets it settle in the table once more.

"are you guys not close?" he asks, blunt and straight.

suffice to say, his discomfort was called for. [break][break]

his surprise, even more so. it really should have been expected that his family would know; that's what anyone would assume. not to her, however. as much as she loved her family to the moon and back, she could never get a proper reading on her brother and, unfortunately, she never took the time to properly speak to him as a sibling since he'd taken up the mantle of hoenn champion. this, add onto her youngest sister's disappearance, left her baffled and at a temporary loss. where does she even start? [break][break]

clearing her throat, and nearly narrows her eyes at his words. "it's.. complicated." and anyone would be able to tell off the tone of her voice that he hit a mark. it was embarrassing to admit, and even more shameful to accept. a mistake on her part, that she didn't like to face. nevertheless, she tries to salvage her own pride for the moment. "we used to be, before he took up the family business." she says, taking another sip of her slightly sweetened coffee. "I was away from hoenn and only returned now and then to help with research. i was surprised to hear him suddenly step down."[break][break]

surprised? an understatement. frazzled, shocked, concerned and at loss? more likely. [break][break]

"i don't even know where to start with this.." she sighs and mumbles, more to herself than the man sitting before her. she turns her attention from the cup, however, and back at the league member. "and my sister, emma stone? do you have any knowledge on her whereabouts..? i heard that she was taken captive by rocket and i haven't heard from her after the disbandment."

he shakes his head at her. he knows as much about emma as he does about daphne, which is absolutely nothing besides their relationship with their former champion and his friend, alex.

"unfortunately, no."

he lifts his head up, hesitates, and then adds.

"if it makes you feel better, alex never seemed anxious about his family when he was still here on hoenn. i'm just guessing here, but maybe he doesn't have a reason. she's safe, i think."

kyle wasn't the type of person to know what to say to comfort anyone. he tries, and he hopes that the effort and sentiment behind his gesture was enough most of the time.

"if you don't mind me asking, what're you gonna do now? look for them?"

she mulls it over. [break][break]

indeed. if alex weren't too concerned over emma, then it'd mean emma wasn't in any immediate danger. still, she couldn't help but to feel the churning anxiety that came with her sister's sudden disappearance. especially when she was once so out there, in the crowds and made it clear to everyone in the world; she was a stone. a complete contrast to daphne, who would have preferred to stay in the shadows and away from her family's spotlight. [break][break]

taking in a deep breath, and sighing out softly, she tries to give kyle a small - though forced - smile in a poor attempt to show feigned relief. "i appreciate it." she says. he's trying, and she can recognize that much. it would be tactless to press him more on the matter, especially when she was the one who called him all of a sudden and came on so strongly. [break][break]

she takes a sip of her coffee and mulls over his question with a soft hum. she'd thought about it; what to do, and what to do next. she hangs her head, shameful enough to admit "... i'm not sure.", while putting her coffee down. "to be honest.. i'm a little bit lost. i was hoping for some lead on my brother and sister." she raises her head "... but I can't exactly wallow, so i will be prioritizing the company." [break][break]

the disdain wasn't well kept. though she tried to maintain face and composure, the concern was plastered on her tone if not in her eyes.

he gives her a sympathetic smile. he cannot exactly gauge how much she's hurting with the disappearance of her family, but he at least knows that she feels defeated from not getting any results from her efforts.

still, he wants to offer her more than just a subtle expression to ease her mind.

"well..."

the moment he opened his mouth, kyle knew he couldn't back off now. he regrets it now, having not prepared the next sentences he'd speak in his mind. everything was impromptu now.

"if it's alex, you can rest assured. he's probably taking an unannounced vacation or something. maybe pursuing a hobby he can't do before? i, uh, dunno. i'm just rambling at this point."

he falls silent for a while, before he suddenly speaks out once more.

"i-i don't know much about your sister, b-but yeah, alex isn't someone who goes into things without a plan. he'll probably contact you in the future, or something..."

this time, he truly runs out of words to say.

that was certainly some way to reassure her. [break][break]

even though the attempt was poor and moot, she could appreciate the effort. if there was anything she's seen or heard, it was that he was a generally quiet guy. that said, suddenly being called out by her must have been a surprise. to top it off, she couldn't help but to feel.. guilty? guilt was close, but she couldn't say for sure. it was more like she was burdening him; first with questions about her brother, and now her concern bleeding out from not knowing the whereabouts. [break][break]

she smiles and shakes her head, waving her hand dismissively. her lips curl into a small smile as she giggles softly. ".. i'm sure it's something he'd have liked to do. i will still be trying to search for him or get into contact," she pauses, tilting her head slightly "so i can give him an earful for putting me in his position~" she tries to lighten the mood, though she knows her attention at being carefree was transparent. but that said, she was still feeling just a bit bad for throwing this onto him. [break][break]

with a deep breath and soft sigh, she picks up her coffee in her hands. "if i recall, you're part of the league, aren't you?" she asks, now trying to change the subject. "i've been trying to get into contact with more people to talk about devon ties. would it be possible for you to connect me?" [break][break]

though she would like to do it herself, she already had her hands full.

he smiles at her attempt to save him from the pit he's been digging himself in. the pleasant expression quickly ends as he starts to get nervous once more.

"i am, but..."

he scratches his chin as he finds the next words to describe his stance on his position. he stares at his cup as he tries to get a vivid description of his job description.

"the elite four don't have that much political power to actually be relevant." he turns his head up while his shoulders give way to a shrug. "i guess we do have some pull here and there though. i'll try to talk to the higher ups for you."

his stare was serious and his expression was neutral for a moment. he makes eye contact with her before he breaks into a smile, comforting, friendly and welcoming.
