Man this place was creepy as hell. Caius had seen the place every now and then as he walked through Mauville and all that but man was Mauville Hills scary. It wasn’t like he was afraid or anything but he kinda wanted to explore it. Thus, when a mission came up on the League’s board about it he took it first thing. [break][break]

Caius didn’t have a clue who his partner was but he was hyped to jump into the building. He rubbed his hands together and waited for his partner at the front of the hills. This was going to be so awesome, he hadn’t slept the night prior his jimmies were so ready. [break][break]

Ghost stories (or Ghost Pokemon, or just ghosts in general) were a bit of a weak-spot for Toto. Maybe it was the uncanny talent some of her friends had for voices or the byproduct of one too many jokes about Lanturn lights at night, but she got goosebumps just thinking about them. Still, she'd come to Mauville to buy a bike and unless she did this league job it was unlikely the meager bit of money she'd left Dewford with would make it happen.

So she'd signed up, and now she was walking up to the address attached to the job request, and oh god she hated this there were chills running up her arms already! The only comfort she could find approaching the (presumably) haunted apartment complex was the sight of her partner. The listing had said she'd have one and sure enough there he was, and he looked tough! Score!

"Uh, h-hey there!" she called out as she approached, trying not to let her anxiety settle too strongly in her throat and succeeding for the most part, "You're here for the haunted house thing, right?"

Ah man he was so hyped for this he barely noticed when his partner came rolling up to him. Soon his concentration on the building would break and he’d spare a glance at @toto they seemed a bit young to be ghost hunting, then again most youngsters were out and about on the Pokemon training game.

“Yep! I’m your partner for this one…” his words trailed off as he studied the young trainer before them, “You look strong, you been training long?” the questions may have come out of no where but his praise were genuine. Then again, everyone was strong to him, that was the beauty of Pokemon after all anyone could be a powerful trainer and there was no way of knowing besides a hunch. [break][break]

Caius had half a mind to challenge them to a battle right here and now, but that’d just get in the way of the mission wouldn’t it? Maybe another time.

Great! So this large man was her partner to explore this haunted series of apartments with, the goosebumps were smoothing out as they spoke. For the most part. So long as she didn't think the word "ghost" too many times between other thoughts.

She'd expected a lot of responses to her greeting and question. Like a hello. A handshake! Introductions. Maybe a question about her Pokemon? What she most certainly did not expect was a once-over from her partner and a judgement not so different from the one she'd given him. That being a judgement of "wow this person looks strong". At first it was a confidence booster. Was the shine of her first successful battle and subsequent first capture so great it made her look like the powerful trainer she was destined to become? Then it was an anxiety bomb, because now she had to actually answer the question.

"W-well, uh, I'm not sure I'd say I w-was --" Toto was in the middle of setting up what was bound to be a long series of stuttering, indirect, meandering words that would maybe, eventually land on an answer to what the stranger asked when she was mercifully cut off. The man seemed to think better of the question he'd posed to her (and some other thoughts she wasn't privy to) and pushed forward to the task at hand.

"Yeah! Yeah I'm totally ready, absolutely." this was an answer she was much more suited to lying about. In truth she was still terrified at the idea of encountering the specters rumored to live in the apartment complex, but she'd had all morning to build up a facade of confidence and comfort in regards to the matter -- as opposed to the seconds she'd had to try to say "I've only been a trainer for a week and don't know what I'm doing" without absolutely destroying any confidence her partner potentially had in her.

He wasn’t sure about them. They looked strong enough, looked like they had been on the road long enough to collect a good team. But what did he know? His eyes hadn’t been good since his days on the gridiron. [break][break]

Soon, his assumption would be turned upside down when @toto continued their nervousness. A more confident trainer at this point would have had some fire to them. It seemed like they were doing everything they could to not faint. [break][break]

“Alright,” Caius smiled at them, “Well, let's see what you got!.” he didn’t know what to make of the job but he’d lead the other trainer up the stairs to the door and surprisingly enough it was unlocked. [break][break]

Opening the door he’d nod to them to follow him, “Get your Pokemon out if you need, don’t know what’ll be in here. If you do good maybe we can battle.”

By her partner's response Toto could guess her confident act hadn't exactly landed, how embarrassing! She hated looking like a scared newbie, even if that's exactly what she was! She was a trainer now and trainers weren't supposed to quake in their tennies at the thought of running into a Pokemon of all things! Still, she did her best not to let her frustration or self-consciousness show as she nodded and followed her partner up the stairs.

"Oh, yeah, okay," Toto went to fiddle with the pokeballs at her hip at the man's insistence before pausing. Uh, Ghosts, Ghost Pokemon. What were they weak to again? Uh . . . damn, first hurdle already here. Instead of grabbing a pokeball she shifted her hands to her bag and dug around in it until she felt the familiar, worn edges of her dad's Pokemon Encyclopedia. After fishing it out she quickly flipped to the inside of the back cover and began scanning the type match-up chart there.

"Uh, so, what's your name?" she tried to make small-talk as she scanned for "Ghost" in the informative grid.

It sure was drabby in this place. That was the first thing he noticed when he stepped inside. A few cob webs here and there, squeaky wood floors and alotta dust covered furniture. Not exactly his kind of place for a getaway but hey it was at least big. [break][break]

When they asked his name he’d look back and answer, “Caius. Caius Gaumond. Trainer, Gym Leader and-” there was a stomping from the floor above them, “GHOST HUNTER! COME ON!” he’d call out to the person behind him as he made way for the staits, “Alright, we see any ghost you distract them and I’ll get them in a headlock. Sound good?” he didn’t even listen for confirmation he darted up the dodgy wooden stairs.

Toto admittedly, despite being the one who'd asked the question, found herself only half listening as she split her attention between her partner and her encyclopedia. Ghost . . . weak to Dark and itself, strong against -- wait did he say Gym Leader? Her eyes shot up at the bit of Caius's introduction she managed to catch before snapping shut at the sound of heavy footfalls above them. When she opened them Caius was already several steps up the stairs and she was left making up time sprinting after him.

"H-hey, wait up!" she hit the stairs running, taking them two at a time to catch up with the man, "I'm not sure . . . uh, whatever, yeah!" This guy was a Gym Leader, stronger than her, and most importantly didn't seem terrified to be here. All perfect qualifications to call the shots.

There was no time for wait ups! Wait ups were for waiting rooms this was the time for action! Thundering up the stairs he’d make for the first room of the complex he saw. Not waiting for his partner with the force of one thousand angry Nidoking he’d raise his foot and booted the door down only for his foot to split a hole into the wood and his leg would be carried through instead of a grand door slamming entrance. [break][break]

He leaned on the shabby wooden door, from the other side thumping around could be heard. “H-hey. A little help.” he spoke in a uncharacteristically high voice as he rested. If his partner arrived he’d look at them and smile, “Do you think you could kick this the rest of the way for me? I’m a little stuck.” he chuckled, light twinges of pain around his leg as he felt himself getting prodded by the now splintered wood.
