Persephone has been trailing the Delibird for what feels like hours but has only really been minutes. She's not sure how the Pokemon got to Mt. Chimney's peak and she's even less sure why it's dragging what looks like a sack down towards what she can only assume to be Lavaridge town. [break][break]

After some time observing the Pokemon, she does notice something strange - while Persephone is no specialist in Delibird anatomy, she can clearly tell that the sack it is dragging is a raggedy one made of cotton, and not the tail-like appendage the species is meant to have. In fact, the place where the tail is meant to be is scarred, almost looks as though the tail had been pulled or sliced off. [break][break]

Persephone shakes her head, distraught that someone would mutilate a Pokemon like this, and follows the strange Pokemon down the path.

kyle spots his fellow elite four member on his way down from mount chimney.

out of the other three, she was the only one kyle hasn't particularly interacted with. mateo has always been a friend and he has known bailey from working at the slateport police department. he somehow feels that he's excluding her by not being an acquaintance at least, and so it prompts him to approach her even though that's not exactly his style.

as he reaches her, however, he begins to notice the same delibird that she has taken interest of. he observes it for a second, quickly getting what was wrong with it.

"amavi, did you do that?"

he speaks without a warning from behind her, forgetting the whole greeting and everything.

She's always had a tendency to focus too much on a singular thing at the expense of her surroundings, and this time is no different. With Persephone's concern resting solely on the Delibird's tail (or absence thereof), she hadn't seen or heard Kyle's approach, startling at his voice. [break][break]

Her head snaps towards her colleague, expression something between surprise and amusement. [break][break]

"Maybe if Delibird tails were as much of a delicacy as Slowpoke ones," she says with the ghost of a smile. "But no. Look - the scarring is old." [break][break]

Persephone drops her gaze back down to follow the Pokemon as it continues its steady, determined waddle, heavy cotton sack in tow. It's not that the Delibird didn't notice them - she saw its eyes regard the duo - but it didn't seem to actually care that they are here. [break][break]

"I was thinking if I should follow it? I'm a little curious to see where it's going. Want to come?"

the more he stares at the delibird, the more that he is inclined to watch it. it just looked so weird without its tail and he understands why persephone was engrossed on something as trivial as it.

"sure!"

he probably still would have done it even if she hasn't invited him.

the scene felt too familiar to him. he vaguely remembers having to watch a different delibird carry things in its tail and refusing their help, in this very place as well.

"you know, i've seen something like this last year before too. ever wonder where they get the things they put on their tails?"

it escaped him that the delibird in question did not have an actual tail attached.

Persephone pauses to ponder Kyle's question for a very long moment, eyes narrowed and lips parted as she searches her memory for any helpful information she might be able to dredge up about Delibirds. [break][break]

Unfortunately, albeit predictably, there is very little, and her experience with the Pokemon was also limited to an encounter eerily similar to the one Kyle described. [break][break]

"I'm not sure about that part," she admits slowly. [break][break]

"It's weird because I remember coming across something like that once too. I wonder if someone's dropping them off to make deliveries to Lavaridge. I think that's where it's going." [break][break]

She screws her face up at the thought of unlicensed Delibird labour and takes a few steps to follow the Pokemon as closely as possible without spooking it.

"like some kind of illegal drug trade cartel with pokemon couriers? i like that hypothesis."

kyle has been playing some detective games lately and his mind may have been fed with ideas that are less likely to be realistic. still, it's an idea he would've played around with regardless of what he had played the night before.

he follows persephone as the two of them stalk the delibird. nothing seems to be out of place outside of the fact that it does follow the route to the nearest town, not unlike what she had said.

"maybe i should track it when it goes back home, what do you think? i just need like a feather or something, and then i'm sure one of my dogs can do something with it."

this was like police work all over again. he missed his days on the slateport police department when his dogs were actually useful without him trying too hard to make them useful.

Persephone halts mid-stride to fix Kyle with a wide-eyed star for a very long moment. She shouldn't be surprised that someone would think to use Pokemon to commit acts of crime. It wasn't that unusual, she supposed. She'd heard of Nickits and similar Pokemon being trained to steal wallets. [break][break]

"Kyle," Persephone says sombrely. "What is the usual process for arresting a Pokemon?" [break][break]

At least the Delibird's gait was slow enough. She imagined having to run after one of Kyle's numerous Mightyenas on foot through the Jagged Pass and shuddered. [break][break]

"That's not a bad idea! I don't think they can fly, right?" She straightens to her full height and cranes her neck as far as she can to try to peer into the tail-sack. [break][break]

"I wonder what's inside though..."[break][break]

now that he thinks about it, he wonders if there actually were instances of pokemon arrests before.

"beat 'em up and then keep them on pokemon pounds, usually," he answers.

he doesn't know if he can beat this delibird up though. he can probably just kick it and it'll fall over with how much stuff it has on its sack. it also doesn't has a tail, so it'll probably die soon or something. he doesn't know much about pokemon biology, but every part of its body is supposed to be important, right?

perse piques his interest about the contents of the sack. if it was something valuable, he definitely wants to get his eyes on it. then again, this was a pokemon. it probably has useless things like rocks or something in its sack since they have no concept of value.

still, he needs his daily dose of disappointment.

"maybe we'll see it once it reaches the destination," he suggests.

the delibird eventually notices them and starts to pick up speed. in a panic, it tries to fly away, forgetting that it's carrying a sack. perhaps it's used to having a tail around.

"oh," kyle mutters in disappointment before noticing the stuff it has left behind. "hey, free gifts at least."

kyle wasn't always a glass half-full kind of guy, but he knows his blessings when they appear before him. he walks over to the sack of gifts, takes a stick lying around, and prods it with it like what a bard would do to the next person taking the next watch.
