Originally from Motostoke city in the Galar region, Marsha and her two older sisters grew up in an inner city bungalow that was owned by their parents. Marsha's mother Sharon made a decent living as the assistant manager of a local grocery store. Their father Tommis was a real estate agent with a very busy schedule, so his family didn't get to see him at home very often.

When Marsha's older sister Stacey got her first starter, a cute little Sobble, it sparked an interest in Marsha and she decided to follow in her sister's footsteps and become a trainer herself. Marsha's first choice was a Grookey, but it didn't work out for her very well.

The Grookey was extremely hyper, got into all kinds of trouble and made huge messes by knocking stuff over, and they got along about as well as oil and water. So when an equally inexperienced trainer offered to trade her a Toxel in exchange for her Grookey, Marsha didn't hesitate to make the exchange. The Toxel had a docile nature, and it was far more tractable and patient than the Grookey had been, and it turned out to be a good trade.

She did her best to capture some of the local wild pokemon, which ended up including a pair of Rookiedee, a Pidove, a Dottler, and a Wooloo. However, she ended up favoring her Toxel so much that she used it for most of her battles. She felt bad for neglecting the other pokemon, and ended up giving them away to trainers who would have a use for them. For the longest time, she felt the Toxel was all she really needed. Being used in so many battles caused her Toxel to gain a lot of experience relatively quickly.

By the time she obtained her fifth gym badge, her Toxel had evolved into Toxtricity. Having learned the value of trading, she had also captured more wild pokemon and traded them with visiting trainers from other regions, which is how she ended up acquiring her Ivysaur and Hippopotas.

However, it was the combination of a bad loss at the sixth gym, and a talk with a visiting trainer from Hoenn the inspired her to move to the region, with the man having regaled her with various stories that piqued her interest. It sounded like a place that would help her grow as a person and as a trainer, and that was all the motivation she really needed.
