hand in hand is the only way forward; for him, for hoenn.

he's expecting a guest but he won't be there to greet her, at least not at the agreed upon time. league affairs hold most of his attention and as one of the region's strongest gym leaders, he holds more responsibilities than the rest. when he succeeds, it'll be because they expect him to. but when he fails, it might just be the end of him.

the thought subsides when he feels his phone buzz in his pocket. he's late; he's super late, but he has a good excuse this time. regardless, he won't keep her waiting long as not a minute after that he's riding on the back of an aerodactyl, bracing the cold winds as he soars towards his home.

the door slides open and he greets her with a charming smile. "francie, if i'm not mistaken." he extends out a hand. "so sorry for being late. i was stuck in shoal cave for a while." he quickly glances at the clock on the side of the gym; twenty-minutes late.

"have you had a good look around the gym?"

he says to @devo1.

"your path leads to nothing but violence and death. hope exists, sure, but it's slim, and i cannot risk it all for that. not even for you." 

the coldness in the air is combated with the warmness in his voice. for once, he's genuine.

"get out while you can. i'll help you if you need me to. but there's nothing left for you there. hoenn will tremble but it will not fall. i won't allow it to." 

a fleeting touch; perhaps the last he'll share with her.

"i'm sorry, athena."

one moment: nothing; and the next: everything. 

he watches as he weaves through the vastness of the crowd, eyes never once leaving the legendary because he knows how important this is: this turns the tide.

he doesn't possess the love offers nor the knowledge bestows. he wasn't worthy, he's not worthy, but he will be because he knows loss better than anyone else.

tonight, he'll bare his heart for lives lost.

lives he's taken.

"your land—your home—fell because of me. not one day goes by where i don't regret the things i've done. i ask for your forgiveness, but that's not why i'm here." 

he takes a step, breaking away from the crowd to stand isolated by himself. he looks over to , oblivious to the events that transpired that night with . but that doesn't matter, not in the moment. he smiles for her.

"i will not let hoenn suffer the same fate. i'm done running. i will fight for the region, for the people; all i ask is for your help." 

ex-rocket beast, nikolai petrov, reveals his true past to the majority present at the ball. no more lies. no more deceit. this is who he is and there's no changing that.

the past cannot be rewritten but the future remains blank.

"i offer you my body, my life, my soul."

all it takes is a single glance, a soft smile, a fleeting look of the past and he's caught on her hook. his eyes narrow as they trail her out towards the balcony. it's not until she moves out of view does he realize he had been holding his breath.

he seeks refuge but now is not the time for it. he turns to . "stop drinking and look at me." his tone changes in an instant as his hand finds her wrist. "someone from my past is here and if she's here, then there are more." the realization strikes him when he speaks--there are more.

not being able to afford the luxury of scanning the ballroom, he has to juggle his priorities and persephone will always be his highest. "be careful, persephone. i'll find you." true meanings are hidden within his words. he breaks from her. it's not a request but an order.

"i'll find you."

fingers swiftly navigate across his phone and with a single tap, his collateral is secured. any audio received will be recorded as he pockets his phone against his chest. he finds her instantly.

"you shouldn't be here, athena." his voice is low but acute. he steps all too close to her and looms over her, allowing his eyes to undress as he looks to intimidate. but he knows she doesn't cower easily.

"leave. before it's too late."

two drinks are not enough to cast a haze over his judgement. he's at his assigned limit for the night which is shocking for someone with his reputation. but he needs his head clear -- needs it active and constantly aware of his surroundings because even though he's here under the guise of pleasure, he's here for the league, too.

he knows he still doesn't have their full trust but perhaps this could be a turning point: a change that'd benefit both sides. he can only hope.

his date's gorgeous as she always is, but tonight, she completely overshadows him. she puts him in his place and he doesn't mind it because that's where he belongs, at least for tonight. he doesn't feel alone in the shadows because he's not -- how could he be? his light is right next to him and he appreciates every bit of it.

he doesn't hold her hand like he wants to because while they've worked through the invasion, not every thing can fall back into place immediately. some things just take time.

"you're beautiful." 

the silence between them is broken as he shifts on his feet, moving so he's closer to her; so she has to look at him. "i know i keep saying it but only because it's true." he flashes her the same smile she's so familiar with and places his glass down on a random table.

"come on," he takes her by her hand. "dance with me."

espurr: it terrifies him because it knows of its potential, of what it can do it pushed to the brink of extremes. and for that reason only, he chooses to capture it. but he has to be careful.

instead of a full-fledged attack on the psychic-type, he opts for something less violent. his mind is linked to his own psychic-type so no words have to be spoken.

gardevoir hovers forward and sings a lullaby. her HYPNOSIS works wonders and makes it easy for a pokeball to be thrown. he captures the thing.

it's a familiar sight: a man devastated by immense loss, sat by a bar downing shots that he never would have otherwise. the parallels cannot be ignored. he will not let gilbert fall down the same rabbit hole as he did. as he still is in. the man deserves better because unlike nikolai, he's done nothing wrong. nothing.

"fuck, are you that old?" the thought worries him as he downs his share of the shot and slides the glass over to be refilled as well. he'll keep up with gilbert because that's what the man needs right now: a friend through thick and thin. nikolai can only hope to expect the same in return.

numbness begins to overcome them but not nearly quick enough. he keeps his eyes ahead, down, anywhere but his friend.

"i always appreciated how welcoming you guys were. she was kind, warmhearted; and she never judged. i never felt out of place, and that's something." their shots are refilled. he picks his one up before gilbert and raises it towards his friend. "to rosalie." 

shot.

it stings and burns but not for long. the feeling's numbed out and finally he turns to face his friend. "what's your favorite memory of her?"

there's a reason why he asked gilbert to join him: the man is more than capable of standing his own ground. it's evident in how quickly he handles the mudbray. a single attack is enough to down the ground-type for capture. it's impressive, but it also calls for concern because if ever the league decides to turn against him, he's not sure if he'll be able to fend them off.

maybe it's just his paranoia.

but then, maybe not.

they venture deeper into the cave. the walls start to cave in, narrowing and forcing them to move one at a time a single line. it doesn't mess their formation up: gardevoir still remains at the vanguard and serprior covers their rear. he stops when gardevoir stops.

'what do you see?'

he doesn't need to speak it: his mind is linked with his psychic-type, as it always is. there are figures up ahead shrouded in darkness, figures that gardevoir cannot see, even with her psychic abilities.

"there are people up ahead. be careful. we can't sense them." it's as if something's keeping them hidden.

his hand hovers on another pokeball in his pocket, ready as they proceed further in.

slowbro: it reminds him of and how slow she posts. it also reminds him of , but that's to be expected because she has staff work to keep her preoccupied. the former now has no excuse.

"stop. it's not hostile." 

sometimes violence isn't what's needed. it isn't always the answer and that's the whole mentality the league is based on. he has had to give it up for a period of time but he's picked it up again. he's living it again.

guilt pricks away at him, stinging with every word that escapes team leader's lips. his comments are almost passive-aggressive but that's to be expected: nikolai did try to take his life, after all. in fact, according to his memory, he almost succeeded. he takes solace in that.
