there were only two things in this world that cait put above both fernando and stormy.

her family and celebi.

"when i enlisted i had assumed that at the war's end i would go back home," she said. "my family is everything to me; and i want nothing more than to be with them. but at the same time i want to continue working under you."

the young woman sucked in a breath, emboldened by his show of acceptance.

'this is going far better than i expected.'

"i think this transition would be good for me. and while i'll miss new mauville, i can still continue doing good work for the league in a reserve unit."

she appeared to brighten considerably, pleased beyond measure that he had presented her with the opportunity to put forth such a proposal.

"it's not that i can't do it - it's that my schedule wouldn't allow me to."

cait had built herself up to be a politician - a government official and a gym leader. her willingness to take her respective title seriously had caused her work-life balance to be heavily skewed by a sizable margin.

"i'm working on acquiring my associates degree," she said. "i need to be present in my gym four to five days out of the seven to handle challenges. i've meetings to attend - pokemon to raise - "

she squinted her eyes slightly, her head cocking to the side.

"if i said yes, i'd be worn down and barely functional as a team member. unless - "

the young woman straightened in her seat somewhat and gave a little smile.

" - unless i acquire your signed permission to surrender my gym leader's seat and return to fortree as a reservist."

her tone was steady as she presented her own caveat.

the gym leader absently reached toward one of her curls, her face betraying very little as she tugged at the green locks.

"unfortunately i can't. not at the moment, at least."

her expression becomes slightly pinched, as though the admittance was reluctantly given.

her gaze flicked off to the side as she appeared to mull over his words, the man rightfully exasperated by her responses thus far as she flitted about in a metaphorical sense.

"i suppose," she said, indecisively.

cait appeared slightly resistant, the distance that had formed between the two allowing her to acquire some semblance of independence.

"but my feelings are largely irrelevant."

she sought to push past the subject, wanting to veer their conversation back to where it had once been.

"you were discussing a formation of a team before i rudely interrupted you, sir?"

"because the end justifies the means."

it was a saying that the majority didn't look too kindly upon - but she didn't care.

"when i was willing - "

she licked her lips and paused briefly before pressing onward with her response.

"- when i was willing to kill myself and my comrades in that elevator shaft i believed - and still do believe - that my actions were entirely valid. i weighed the potential consequences and found the outcome to be ideal."

she clicked her tongue but accepted her misstep with a grimace. cait had allowed assumptions to drive herself forward, which caused her to take a step back in a metaphorical sense.

'i thought - '

but perhaps she had been wrong in assuming that fernando had been manipulating her? had gone out of his way to string her along even. a brief flash of bewilderment caused her reel back and more carefully review the information placed before her.

"i see," she said, simply. "i misunderstood."

the girl forcibly winded herself down, taking a seat and wilting a little as she paced through her own thoughts. she was second-guessing herself, her emotions having allowed her to behave in such a manner. her face warmed and she thanked the gods above her skin concealed it somewhat.

"i apologize for my outburst. i reached assumptions without letting you finish and without properly communicating my concerns. i'll take care not to repeat my mistake."

she was somewhat eager for him to continue, her green-eyed gaze remaining fixed upon him.

"by your book then," she said, tentatively adding her perspective on the matter. "you mean following the rules whilst going about situations in a more... logical sense?"

there was something going on between the two males - though she wasn't entirely sure as to what. from her perspective, it appeared as though caius was far more eager to verbally prod at derek than the former gym leader was; the man acting entirely peaceable in comparison.

"i've been putting in some effort," she admitted. "self-defense can come in handy. and while i'm not the best - i'm no push over either."

her glameow gave a dramatic stretch and her machamp flexed his muscles, both appearing ready to confront whomever they were directed towards.

"i don't mind a bit of a show if you two want to go at it. i want whomever wins, though."

cait's gaze flitted between the pair, her smile remaining broad as she sought to maintain the good mood.

cait tentatively poked her head in, her verdant gaze sweeping across the alcove and its vibrant interior prior to her making a full entrance. she was garbed in her traditional dress, the powder blue material hugging her figure in its usual way.

"kim!"

she appeared to be in possession of a hand-woven basket, the carrier stuffed with edibles and gifts she happily bore for her friend.

'its been a while since we were able to do this.'

things had picked up as of late, her city demanding a bit more form her - her personal hours trimmed down by a sizable amount within the last few months.

"i come bearing gifts."

at her heels was a small ponyta foal and an even snaller skowvet whom latched onto its back.

"and babes as well," she added, jokingly. "i hope you don't mind. it's their first time outside of the gym."

brief flashes of kim cole-essam came to mind, the girl experiencing an unpleasant twinge at the idea of circumventing his authority. but the remaining seats that were presently occupied by Olivia Abbiati and Orion Lykos made the proposal far more palpable.

"you're asking for people to put their careers and reputation on the line," she said.

she pulled away from the desk, her expression difficult to discern.

"but for what? what's it all for?"

cait closed the distance between herself and her pokemon, laying a gentle hand upon the creature. her eyes fall shut and a moment passes before her tangrowth stirs, their eyes blinking open as they trembled lightly.

"in exchange for your victory."

the girl raises her head, switching to a more formal tone as she addressed her challenger.

"you'll be given your badge."

her tangrowth clamored onto her feet and her mistress soon joined her, the girlmoving toward the woman and revealing a badge which rested within the palm of her hand.

"i wish you luck on your journey."

the crunch resulted in tangrowth's consciousness abruptly blinking out, the vines that hugged closely to their mysteriously-shaped body possessing a complex network that involved her circulatory system. and while the outer layers could be trimmed or damaged without issue, these proved comparatively more sensitive.

tangrowth tipped over silently, her eyes falling shut and her form frightfully still. cait appeared mildly alarmed by her sudden fall, but she schooled her features well enough and raised her hand.

"call your pokemon off," she said, her tone firm and brimming with a hint of concern. "you've won."
