"i have, sir."

cait flips open the manila folder as she confirms this, her gaze remaining averted as she glances over her chosen documents. the girl whispers quietly to herself as she does so, verbally listing what she'd like to discuss and in what order. cait appears distracted in that instance, eventually lifting her gaze back onto him. 

"it's been mostly business as usual. the economy is solid despite a few drawbacks involving the war. the only constantly changing factor relates to the city's budget. my advisors are constantly squabbling over what we should be focusing on."

meetings were often spent with debating what should go where and why.

"but before we formally start the report - is there anything you'd like to discuss, sir?"

the young woman appears entirely absorbed and even fixated, failing to truly grasp his subtle displays of affection. perhaps their lack of interaction of late had caused this, the expression she presently wore bearing naught more than a hint of a smile.

"sir."

a familiar flutter originates from the depth of her chest as well as her belly at the mere sight of the man. the flood of warmth is one she had grown use to, a small surge of dopamine experienced as he addresses her by her surname. 

"it's a pleasure to see you again."

she enters and makes her way toward her usual seat. 

"i hope your day is going well." 

the office looks familiar - little having changing in regards to its already pristine layout.

their interactions had - admittedly - been sparse as of late. the young woman had become increasingly independent, merely filing reports on a monthly basis which had been delivered by way of electronic mail. cait had worked on improving her image as a politician, securing funding for projects and ensuring her gym awarded badges at a frequent enough rate.

the woman had become a workaholic, adopting her mentor's work ethnic in a sort of desperate bid to emulate him. but she still considered herself lackluster in comparison to him despite her supposed success in her chosen field. and her own personal failings caused her to unintentionally distance herself somewhat, a solid portion of the year spent without addressing him in an openly friendly manner.

though she had sent him a small gift for his birthday with a lovely note in recent memory, the delivered parcel filled with a capsule containing an espeon that originated from one of her vaporeon's past litters. though even she feared the written message had been a tad stiff and overly formal - lacking her usual warmth. but she had sent it regardless, hopeful its tone would prove substantial. 

cait pondered over her own nervousness as she stood before fernando's office door, the meeting arranged so she could properly brief the man - in person - on how her city was fairing. she'd hesitate before knocking lightly upon his door, quickly returning to securing her hold upon the rather plump manila folder that she carried.

she blinked once - 

- twice. 

"oh."

the girl appeared to ponder over his question, her head tilting slowly to the side as her green-eyed gaze remained fixed upon the ranger.

"what made me do that," she parroted, dully.

cait allowed herself to release a quiet chuckle, her head shaking from side to side in a sort of easy dismissal. 

"isn't it obvious, anderson? everything i did was for . he was on the other elevator. so it was absolutely necessary that we died in his place. it was all for the betterment of the region and to secure its future."

the young woman's expression lit up as she spoke, a curiously fanatic gleam in her eye. her rattata chittered happily, his mistress's giddiness proving positively infectious.

"work - work - and more work."

she laughed and gave a light shake of her head. her machamp took leave of their presence for only a moment, returning with a fresh towel that he pressed into her hand.

"thank you, baby."

cait ran the soft material over her sweaty face, draping it around her neck once she felt as though she had cleaned herself up a bit.

"outside of running the city i'm taking care of my pokemon. spring time just came and went - and i have to deal with the usual amount of eggs and newborns. my rapidash just foaled - which made for an interesting experience."

it was - admittedly - quite a bit to deal with by her lonesome, but she had made the wise decision to dole out duties to pokemon whom had proven themselves more than capable. her hypno was basically her second in the gym, making sure everything was in proper order in her absence. 

"but it's all worth it in the end," she said. "and about that - " 

cait eyed derek, quirking a neatly trimmed brow.

"you gonna try working your way back up to being a gym leader? i could put in a good with if you need it. networking goes a long way."

pyroar's female counterpart and mate proved just as eager to close the distance between herself and mightyena in support of her mate. unfortunately, the collaboration of multiple roars caused the pair to retreat several steps. cait took advantage of their temporarily subdued state, calling out to the pair to return to heel. they promptly obeyed, though remained at her front as they eyed the well-united pack. 

"mightyena?"

it was in that instant that she was reminded of a certain someone, her eyes rounding before her verdant gaze snapped onto kyle.

'so this is who i'm here with.'

she was informed someone else would be present, but that it was entirely at her discretion whether she sought them out. as her luxray sneered at the fire-type pair, she'd absently stroke his prominent mane; her expression transitioning from neutral before a mirthless smile tugged at her lips.

"kyle!" 

cait raised her arm and gave a wave, falsified cheer in her voice.

the challenge reminded her of her past excursion into the wood that occurred a year prior; when she had sought out her god in a desperate bid to ensure their safety and well-being. it was cait's frequent exposure to nature that allowed for the woman to take to the tropical setting more easily, tapping into the survival etiquette that had been drilled into her skull multiple times over. her companions adapted just as easily, a good portion of them wild caught and accessing their own respective instincts. 

they enjoyed the ability to free roam and hunt at their leisure, though they maintained a close proximity to their mistress and the temporary territory they had carved out for themselves. it was the desire for fish that drove the party to the sea, cait riding upon the back of her tropius as they navigated the humid jungle. it was her male pyroar who swaggered out of the tree line first, though he paused momentarily as he noticed the presence of mightyena at the beach. 

desiring to clear them before his mistress's arrival, he sought to close the distance somewhat before baring his teeth and releasing a noble roar. cait had made her appearance only a moment later, a look of alarm on her face as she noticed her fire-type moving to charge the frolicking canines. 

"shit."
