Erin never lingered enough to have a chance to mingle with most of her colleagues—partners in crime—before or after missions. Friends within the organization were less than a handful, carefully picked, and that had never bothered her. She wasn't in Rocket for friendship.

As much as she doesn't regret taking such an approach, for a few seconds after the two are left alone, Erin realizes she may be losing efficiency by choosing not to first get an idea of what they were like.

The picture of the Rocket operative they were instructed to use is taking up almost half of her screen. The other half displays her simultaneous attempts at overriding the network's edit logs. She fully intends to ignore the newcomer as she repeats, for the umpteenth time, what she wants. "Yes, I can tell the owner usually deals with all of this. Let me rephrase my question: Which of you does the rest of the team look to when your boss isn't around?"

It's only when the employees divert their attention from her to the voice that she gives in and turns to face him.

With the young man standing in her way, Erin can't exactly make her exit yet. It would be a matter of time, now, as long as he wasn't as daft as the others. She does hope his IQ doesn't further bring down the room's average.

Littleroot Town is in the middle of nowhere, sandwiched between Oldale Town and a forest that's too close to Slateport to have turned out this uneventful. Clearly something had gone wrong.

One could say it got the short end of the stick, but the problem, she's certain, is not of a natural type. Despite ticking the entire checklist of reasons why a town flourishes, even the vibrance of the wildlife did nothing to help its case.

Erin sighs. She's so bored that she's started pondering about the economical history of this place. She steps out, walking purposefully but without any real direction in mind until she spots another person.

The glint in his eyes and the shifting angle of his tablet gives him away. "You could have just asked for the source program." The comment is casual, despite its implications. Like his, her gaze soon turns elsewhere; to the pile the other man pointed towards, in fact.

"Siri, send the other gentleman a copy, too." Whatever device the man had on his possession for communication, the Porygon2 would attempt to establish a connection to send him a 2D version of its map. Even if the device in question didn't have bluetooth on, the synthetic pokémon would force it to activate for its needs.

She should probably warn him about that, for his safety. A hum. Maybe later, if he didn't notice it himself first.

A brush against her shoulder conceals her pokéball until the aggron materializes in front of them with a

. Erin makes a mental note to train him on stealth next. Their endurance training was going well. One more module wouldn't hurt. She knows her meowth would have benefited from the strict regime she was submitting her latest captures to.

Erin nods at a second pile of rubble, one of the many dots blinking in Siri's map, before walking straight in the opposite direction. The aggron moves forward. "You might want to step back." She knows she doesn't want to be too close when Avalon starts digging through it.

Technically, she doesn't need to run any more scans. The pokémon had gotten enough information during their two previous interactions and the arm was already fitted accordingly. Many things could happen in half a week, though, and Erin, being the meticulous woman she is, wants it all to be perfect.

Lucius's answer has her frowning. Smile gone and replaced. She can't tell if he's only being childishly inappropriate or if he legitimately has lost most of the nerves on his shoulder. Better test it now, she decides.

"I used the same alloy that steelix are made of," she begins her explanation as the arm is positioned to attach to his shoulder. The pale blue of her eyes is diverted from his gaze for this. "Harder than diamonds."

The arm is turned over with the same care she'd use when she was working on sculpting it. She taps twice on the space where his forearm would have been, and a metal lid gives way to an OLED screen. "Comes with an integrated computer. Phone, dex, radio, map, and whatever else you want to download from its App Store."

Until then, everything looked and worked great. It's no surprise; they were the easiest parts of the project. The real trial of fire begins now. Hopefully she'd only have to make a few adjustments, rather than completely remake the arm.

"The electrodes I added over your shoulder will pick up when your muscles contract, and move accordingly." She presses down on the prosthetic arm's socket, at its very top, to show him where she means.

Lucius only needs to know the general location. He wouldn't be able to see the EMG electrodes or the amplifier, of course, as they're hidden inside the arm.

The girafarig doesn't seem too aggressive. The solrock is hard to read. Erin ignores both of them, but slows down just in case the man does wish to catch one of them.

When she spots the aggron, Erin is torn. She wants it, but she's reluctant to leave her baby noibat to her own devices until the whole fight and capture is done. The only possible solution in this situation is to leave one of her most trusted pokémon to deal with the aggron while she fetches her noibat.

Mars, her gengar, materializes soon afterwards. A nod in the aggron's direction tells him all he needs to know while Erin runs ahead in search of baby Malibu.

Three fire wisps flicker alive on his fingertips. They're a few tones lighter than his body. Purple, leaning to lavender. They fly towards the aggron, circling it even as it charges forward with a

heavy slam

.

The gengar simply steps aside. Evading such attacks is easy. What's not so easy (for the aggron, of course) is waving off the

will-o-wisps

entering its body one by one.

Before long, its steel parts would make the heat unbearable. In the meantime, the gengar fires a

dark pulse

. The difference in temperature between its body, growingly hot, and the gengar's attack, chilly as his own, would make it shiver. That fraction of a second gives gengar the freedom to attack once more. The

shadow ball

is just as cold.

It turns into a long battle between an

iron head

and a

taunt

. When Erin returns, the two pokémon are still at it.

She catches the exact moment when the aggron makes the risky choice of using a

double-edged

move. It's clearly a bad choice, because her gengar pushes it back right in time with a

dark pulse

. She notices the aggron recoil—surely it's not because of her gengar's deflective move.

"That's the first thing we're working on, then," she declares. Neither of the pokémon would probably know what she's referring to, but whether or not they understood now is irrelevant. All she needs is to have the aggron in a pokéball for now.

"Let's wrap up, Mars."

[break][break]

The wild aggron is already exhausted, not only from the gengar's attacks but also due to its own. One more

dark pulse

and Erin tosses an empty pokéball at it.

The noibat flies towards the gengar with a berry offering for a job well done.

Two possibilities come to mind: this Silas either thinks too poorly of her or feels too confident in himself, neither of which Erin appreciates one bit; but he doesn't seem to judge her reasons, and for that she decides he is no enemy.
