to fly all the way down to dewford town for its specialty champignons, only to find them out of stock at the local market, could be considered bad luck. to find out the cave where they grow had been partially flooded by toxic waste only weeks ago? that's a national loss in vera's eyes. as the league-affiliated scientist that she is, it comes as no surprise that she'd pay the cave in question a visit while she's in town. something, anything, must be salvageable.

what does come as a surprise is the incoming attack.

"ooh!" she'd squeal when her eyes got a glimpse of the dust left behind by a quickly approaching geodude mid-rollout. other than that, though, vera is perfectly content standing back and watching the battle unfold, lest she or her pokémon end as a casualty.

it's not until after the geodude falls unconscious that the ginger offers a congratulatory "good job," paired up with a friendly smile and a few claps of encouragement. "man, i really hope that treatment isn't reserved for anyone in the golem evolution line."

the picture is completed by an alolan graveler who lingers by her feet, too anxious to stay still and yet too spooked to move freely.

there is a knot in her stomach that refuses to untie itself as she's plunged from one reality (or not-reality) to another. vera tries to blink the disorientation away. though not completely successful, her eyes are able to adjust to a building that's both familiar in its style as unfamiliar in its structure.

"anise? where are you?" she asks to the stagnant air, worried about the pokémon that had been with her only moments ago. a name she hasn't seen on the news in a long time is brought up in the scream-whispers of a bunch of people. the tension on the faces of league officers is hard to miss.

vera's instincts are asking her to do so many things at once that it's no surprise it overwhelms her. each urgent matter pulls at her. neither of them can win. she's glued to whatever floor she's in, until a sixth sense makes her turn and she catches a hooded figure's eyes on her. she gasps. her knees give out as a single thought crosses her mind.

contrary to expectations, vera's footsteps come from farther inside the sewers system, rather from outside. they're not hurried. in fact, it's not until she recognizes the hair and the voice that she picks up her pace.

"razz? wow, what a funny coincidence," she greets with a bright smile that is regretfully hidden behind the mask she wears. well, she doesn't actually regret not having to breathe in the undoubtedly foul smell of these sewers. but going through deadly situations together does have the tendency of endearing a person, and the smile is genuine.

"did i keep you waiting? sorry, i happened to arrive way too early and figured i'd go ahead and do a bit of reconnaissance while my partner arrived. diagnosis? this place is a huge maze and doesn't have enough light. luckily, i brought someone that can help with that. plus, a map."

vera turns her phone around so that razz can see the blueprints on her screen. from behind her, a lanturn emerges, hovering at around the height of her waist and illuminating the place with the orbs above her head.

"razz, meet taffy. taffy, this is razz." the light orbs on taffy's head tingle with a movement of her head. vera's gaze turns towards the empoleon next to razz. later, with introductions out of the way, the mission proper can begin. "let's go this way."

sometimes vera forgets not everyone's gotten a chemistry degree. her eyelids flutter shut for a moment. "right," she mouths slowly.

razz may have meant the whole 'glass shards as spearheads' thing as a joke, but vera's 20/15 visual acuity had another story to tell. one she's not so excited about. "well, perhaps i should ask you to read my fortune too. i don't think that was shock making me see things."

the plan he explains to her is dangerous, but she supposes they have no choice but to face it.

"don't jinx us, razz!" she gasps in the same breath as a nervous laugh. there's a part of her that's genuinely terrified. the boy's most dangerous hypotheses had all come true so far. under danger of being called superstitious, vera would rather not to test her luck. she turns on her heels, ready to take on one swarm at a time.

a nod is offered, perhaps more for her own benefit than his. "fondue, do you think you could distract them for us? you can surf pretty fast when you want to."

an affirmative hum follows his words of thanks. considering vera herself doesn't think their actions worthy of proper gratitute, she takes them lightly as she steps down the escalator and into an abyss of dark purple.

"not consistently, but we could try." vera's mind wanders briefly to her chinchou and lanturn, whom she had thankfully left back home. she wouldn't be able to subject them to the dangers of poisonous fumes even if she'd brought them along. pretzel's

would have to make do. she nods in its direction.

dark wine turns into sangria as the antenna on the magnezone's head flashes white for a couple of seconds. its light manages to penetrate farther than kyle's phone, though the sea of fumes still looked endless from their spot. most notably, however, vera's eyes catch a stroke of pale green floating away.

vera is pretty sure she has no authority to deny her, even if she wanted to. which she doesn't, either way. selena's help is more than welcome, as is her presence. she gestures for selena to go ahead, and watches her choice in pokémon with curious eyes. a sceptile.

"hey, ascalabus," she greets with a warm smile. had she ever seen a mega sceptile in the flesh? she doesn't think so. it leaves her in a bit of awe. "nice to meet you. my girl over there is called anise, though you may have heard that bit already." she chuckles lightly before letting the two pokémon go back to their tasks. it's a delicate operation they're dealing with here.

the scientist ponders for a brief moment. "i'm no biologist, but she doesn't seem to be complaining, at the very least?" she answers, not totally certain herself. figuring her ampharos would have better luck with a

signal beam

, she turns to the mega-evolved sheep. "anise, can you try and communicate with her?"

the ampharos would have to put that move to good use. the red gem on her forehead glows brighter and a series of waves become barely visible as their radius grows.

"they'll probably be joining us here soon." the situation really is weird, but she has no other possible explanation to offer. vera is no detective; she's never been able to figure out the culprit in mystery films before they're revealed.

rufio's suggestions are as plausible as anything else they'd hypothetized thus far. vera doesn't have the answer, so she leaves the possibility open with a "maybe. i'm not sure." and, luckily for her, her magnezone emits a beep just in time for her to not have to come up with any other explanation.

vera can hear herself deflate when they finally get a glance at what the magnezone's found. "huh? it's an empty pokéball." a moment passes before she points out, "not a safari ball, though?" how odd.

her head tilts innocently to a side. honestly, vera hadn't even thought about the possibility of the bad guys deleting their research. well, not that she had been looking forward to it, really, but she supposes it would be valuable information for the intelligence team. and, of course, she doesn't want the scientists to escape and keep endangering lives.

"you're right. there's a bunch of tall windows at the front — typical industrial warehouse — but we'll have to be extra careful not to be spot-"

a loud, thundering sound interrupts her. it's followed by another, louder and definitely closer. the ground seems to tremble, and vera's first reaction is to turn in the opposite direction. unfortunately, another set of steps would be waiting that way too. farther away, but just as dangerous if the sheer force of those steps were anything to go by. she has no other option but to step back until there's no more space between the brick wall and her back.

after gesturing for the man to hide behind the other pillar, she extends a hand towards her dedenne, until then curiously sniffling around the passage. a mouthed "i've got an idea" would be almost immediately followed by a throw.

are a pair of berry seeds. vera throws one of them past the guard closest to them. the other, she saves in case it's needed for the other.

vera has seen a scene like this before. in a movie. logic tells her she must be dreaming and maybe she should be more careful about falling asleep with the tv on, but she's also pretty certain she couldn't create such a ghastly scene in her sleep. the shiver that takes over her entire body also brings her a step closer to her ampharos.

"at least you feel real, anise." a small sigh escapes her lips. the expressions swirling in her eyes shift from confusion to fear to determination. she raises a finger at the party that is about to be blasted into pieces, just like— "can you set up a light screen before them?"

the ampharos complies while the woman places a hand over her mouth. the crimson on the walls burns brightly in her retinas.

it's not everyday that florist gets to visit gardens other than vera's own, so she's determined to explore as much as she possibly can and bask in as much sun as she possibly can. even if she can still do that in the aforementioned garden. it's just different, the way new places feel. exciting.

for vera, it's an opportunity to breathe in some truly fresh air. she loves lilycove, she really does, but she also loves the green and pink and yellow of the scenery before her eyes. as they walk, spots of white start showing up too.
