His voice was kept dry; eyes sweeping to appraise the Rocket Admin and his disguise. There was a small “tsk” as his tongue tapped against the roof of his mouth, betraying the small upturn of his lips. “It's passable. Five? Six?”[break][break]

The venue was already allowing people to pass through its doors.[break][break]

He took the suitcase from beneath the seat. “Our suitor is going to be waiting for us at the bar. If they offer to buy us a drink, remember that it has to be a gin and tonic—that will be our cue,” and there was no need to disguise the package as Desmond made his way to the entrance.[break][break]

It was unlike anything he had ever seen.[break][break]

Rather than comment on the appearance of the Type:Null, Desmond bent his knees to crouch down before the creature; he balanced his weight on the balls of his feet as his fingers brushed through the black, coarse fur that covered only a portion of the pokemon's body.[break][break]

With his eyebrows furrowed, he let his thoughts brew in silence as he gently plucked a follicle of hair from its back, then a scale, and then a feather. Three separate samples from three separate portions of the body that felt worlds apart from one another. “If it is vicious, then it would be best to keep it to its capsule or in a secure location. We wouldn't want it to escape.”[break][break]

He placed them into their own vials, tucking them into his coat pocket.[break][break]

The characteristics of the creature make no sense—there is no sense of cohesion as his hand went from fur to scales, and then to feathers. The Chimera was unlike anything he had ever seen.[break][break]

“You've really stumbled across something,” and that was when his fingers would dip beneath the cusp of the helmet, feeling the creature underneath to confirm that it was not natural; it was an addition. “Now, what is this?”[break][break]

He would grasp the helmet, tilting up the unconscious pokemon's head to see where there was a latch. There was no mechanism. Instead, he found himself staring at a contraption that must have been welded shut. What dwelt beneath this mechanism could not be seen by the naked eye.[break][break]

Breaking it off would not be feasible—not without sacrificing the pokemon in the process.[break][break]

He would rub his brow, pushing back the stray hairs that dipped before his vision. “We'll extract whatever genetic information we can get from these samples—that can help us decipher where to go next,” and he could remember the colleges of his past that would have been more than eager to dissect this species to see what secrets it could have held.[break][break]

Desmond would not share their opinion. It would be frivolous to jeopardize a creature like this. It was better to preserve it and learn through observation.[break][break]

“I want you to keep a close eye on this one—get a notebook, something small that you can keep on your person at all times. Take notes. Make them extensive. Never let anyone see it—this is your science project, Miss Giovanni.”

Another member was welcomed to the fold. It was always so nice when a plan was coming together. “Miss Giovanni has left samples with us regarding her strange pokemon. They are still being processed. Matching segments of its DNA has been the most time-consuming. This was the first time I laid eyes on an artificial pokemon,” and there was a hint of fatigue as he rubbed his temples.[break][break]

“As far as I can tell, the pokemon has been engineered from multiple sources. It was a miracle that it managed to form one cohesive creature.” A question would linger from this analysis: why? Why had Aether gone so far to produce this chimera? And for what purpose?[break][break]

“I imagine @alison will be in touch—she's just as interested in her little discovery as the rest of us,” and this was only scratching the surface. More research would await them. “There will be more prospects to come, but I'm still waiting on specific... information regarding the portal.”[break][break]

He sipped his coffee, nudging a small pile of the folders in her direction to read as she pleased. “If the information is what I believe it to be, then try to stay close to Lilycove in the coming days. You will not want to miss this opportunity.”

Sterling silver. He rubbed the smooth metal beneath his thumb, polishing the surface that distorted his image.[break][break]

In the back seat of the car, Desmond Kelley has a moment of silent reflection—his cuff links repeatedly rubbed as his hands are held in his lap. The slouch in his back that allowed his elbows to balance on his knees ached, just to remind him of the strength that time had whittled from him.[break][break]

A party for the higher echelon awaited them; Galar representatives had been flown into Slateport, just as the League thought it had wrangled back control. It was a charity event—something that failed to register in the man's heart as his fingers stroked his cuff links, just to betray the racing of his mind.[break][break]

Galar had a strict border policy—their ecosystem was sensitive and certain pokemon posed an invasive risk. As of such, many prospective men and women who desired exotic species turned to... illegal means to fill their collections.[break][break]

He had been the foot in the door—the one with the clout to get them inside. A previous life with Silph as an accomplished scientist had opened many doors, and he was eager to open more as he oozed into the position of underboss.[break][break]

People thought he was enjoying his retirement. He supposed he was.[break][break]

Kingsley Arrow had been the perfect candidate to play the fair-haired son; affable, approachable. The Rocket member had the charisma that would sell the story.[break][break]

“I don't trust the valets with the car. They might be one of our former members,” and that would make them twitchy to steal anything that wasn't nailed down.

There was a dead man, dressed in an Aether Uniform, spread out on the white-tile floor; a body bag unzipped and thrown to the side spelled how it had been brought to him.[break][break]

Desmond Kelley was not here to examine a corpse. No, he was here to identify what it had brought. What had the Aether Foundation lost? What had Rocket gained?[break][break]

His cold stare would flick up from the body and to @alison , waiting for her to state what had been gained. “This must not travel beyond this room—do you understand?” Of course she would.[break][break]

“I presume he was not carrying identification—that would be too short-sighted, though I do question why he traveled with this... strange pokemon you mentioned.”[break][break]

The Slateport Power-plant hummed, drowning out the noise as the overhead lights flickered—he had taken her down to the depths of the facility, where people did not venture.[break][break]

His hand stroked at the end of his mustache in thought; a trial run?[break][break]

Desmond Kelley leaned back in his chair, grasping a file from the pile—the aether foundation's logo was emblazoned on its cover. “We have already allocated a good majority of our resources from Slateport following the... events of a few days prior. I believe you will find it to be to your benefit.”[break][break]

The projector flickered, displaying the paused footage of Mossdeep.[break][break]

“You see, I will have to resend my responsibility as Head Scientist. I will need qualified candidates to overtake my existing projects—not that I will be ignoring my old position completely, but I will have other matters that will have to take precedence.”[break][break]

He gestured to the folders. “And there must be new projects, as well. Our areas of expertise may differ, but I believe I have something that will match your skill set.”[break][break]

A folder would be slid her way—the contents blacked and redacted.[break][break]

Type:Null. Polaroid pictures were tapped to the pages, showing the specimen that @alison had retrieved. A secret that he had kept.[break][break]

“I believe you will find that one to be to your interest. Our connections at Aether have been fruitful, and it seems that they have found success with their various projects,” and he would tap his laptop.[break][break]

Mossdeep footage played again. “And we would not want to fall behind the curve, now would we?” He would say as the portal that deployed the Ultra Beasts hung high in the sky, distorting their atmosphere to show a world that they had never seen.

A keycard is pressed to a door—a light changed from red to green in the ruins of Slateport, where buildings rest in their state of dilapidation. The events of Fallarbor have just transpired, but there was no time for rest. The once-Head Scientist would signal for the woman behind him to keep pace as he dipped into the depths of his workplace.[break][break]

His walk was brisk. They had to move. They had to relocate before too much time could elapse.[break][break]

Desmond Kelley would shove a cardboard box into her hands—stacks of binders and lab equipment ready to overflow. He had been wise enough to pack the night prior, leaving the once bustling lap to a state of dismantlement. It would not take long for two people to move its contents.[break][break]

“Our escort will be parked at the docks. We cannot dally,” and his eyes would only take a moment to appraise his once-assistant before he would retrieve a box of his own.

Time waxed and waned. Its passage was not lost on him.[break][break]

Desmond stirred his spoon, watching cream melt into his mug of coffee until it shone like caramel. He needed something sweet—something warm—to keep the mind sharp as he regarded the mess that laid before him. A mess that was present through the videos displayed and the pile of manila folders that were spread across the table.[break][break]

A folder was taken, opened, and inspected.[break][break]

If it did not have what he desired, it was closed and thrown back to the pile. It was a constant rotation of information that he had to digest.[break][break]

When Miss Fowl made her appearance, she would find the man resting a hand to his temple, easing the tension as his skin crinkled.
