The deep cadence of Gavin's voice is distorted by a gas mask; each exhale rattles through the filtration system as if to add dramatic punctuation to his words. Smog hangs in thick clouds over a large section of Mauville's indoor complex — plastic acts as a barrier of entry, warning signs posted by each tented opening. He enters first, brushing an opaque sheet to the side and holding it open for Valerio to follow.

With Katherine Fairburne's acquisition of the Mauville gym, Rocket's influence flourishes in the city's shadows. As such, they had a vested interest in making sure the only crimes committed were their own.

“now, the last one makes much more sense than the other.” voice muffled under a similar gas mask, valerio's words harmonizes with his footsteps following gavin's lead into the complex. the executive's gloved hands reach to two capsules from his utility belt. bruce the crobat amplifies the corviknight's defog with tailwind while phantom the runerigus sneaks into the shadows of mauville complex to check on the source of this putrid smoke.[break][break]

“let's be real. i know you like cadis more than declan. everyone does,” valerio doesn't, but he understands why the newer members grow fond of him. if only it helps with his personal goals, too.[break][break]

the moss-colored gas thins as they reach the end of the hall, their vision becoming much clearer than when they entered the enclosed premises. valerio takes the lead, following the tracks left by his runerigus. when they get to the corner, he nods his head right, signalling to gavin. “but before you say anything, i agree that if this is really about it, then this is astronomically stupid.”[break][break]

There's a palpable tension in the air as Gavin wordlessly follows the signal, turning right. Scizor's wings create a fitting soundtrack for his ire: a loud, droning hum that shadows their every step.

"You are pushing it, Dachev." Gavin's ire escalates at the sneer in Valerio's tone. His friendliness toward the other didn't exempt the executive from his wrath. In truth, his temper says nothing of his feelings for the two men they discuss. Cadis had simply passed Gavin's chains to a new master. "If you think—"[break][break]

The underboss cuts himself off as Runegrigus returns. The mission takes precedence over his anger, and he shelves the conflict.[break][break]

"We teach them how Rocket handles defectors."[break][break]

His suspicions are confirmed as they draw close. He recognizes the group from the submarine, particularly their leader — she bore some pretentious name like Roxie or Plumeria or something. He doesn't give a shit what her name is. His sharp whistle echoes in the Mauville complex and startles the group. They turn with eyes wide and try to scatter, but—[break][break]

"Don't think so. You really thought you'd get away with it, hm?"[break][break]

A ring of keys on Gavin's belt reveals itself as his Klefki, whose FAIRY LOCK sees the exits shimmer with pink energy. Gavin cracks his neck.

“that’s the problem, gav. they don’t think.” valerio enjoys the show as the leader of the defectors struggle with his klefki’s fairy lock. they thought the weezings they summoned can help them go incognito, but now are incredibly helpless at their pokémons’ presence.[break][break]

the leader of the group clicks her tongue, then the worried expression dissipates and turns into a sneer. “you’re surprisingly good at this, mr. underboss. but who says we can’t fight?” she retrieves two more balls from her pocket and calls a pair of salandit. “boys, help me with these two. show them why we deserve the clown beast more.”[break][break]

valerio’s eyes widen at her sudden confession, dark orbs shift to gavin’s. “they want the blaphe—blaceca— the clown thing?” the executive then bursts out laughing. “what makes you think you can handle that monster, lady?”[break][break]

Had they done their research on the underboss, they'd know him as a collector of fossils — most of which were rock-types. A Steelix shakes the ground beneath them as it's released from confinement, its master already pulling the pin from his glasses and causing evolutionary energy to envelope the metal titan. A SANDSTORM whips up around the behemoth, SAND FORCE boosting the ensuing ROCK SLIDE.[break][break]

He'll help Katherine Fairburne and cover the damages after; now, these idiots needed to be taught a lesson.[break][break]

"Best hope your boys bring something better to the table."

valerio observes the change in the underboss’s demeanor as he release a mega steelix from the underground. he laughs alongside him because he understands what his partner is talking about. where gavin conquers the deep earth, valerio guards the surface.[break][break]

“don’t go all out or Katherine Fairburne wouldn’t like it,” he jokes as his fingers twirl to command his pokémons. as soon as the rock serpent breaks from the ground and rock slides the targets, his runerigus summons earthquake to stop them from retaliating. the salandits faint from the barrage of attacks. only the weezings from the leader remains.[break][break]

she clicks her tongue as she watch her henchmen lay on the ground and plead their innocence. “you just got lucky! you haven’t seen the best of me yet.” she calls on the weezings to gather in-front of her, the smog thickens once more as they congengrate by her side. then a monsoon of fire splashes into valerio and gavin: the woman's last resort is a heat wave against their pokémons.[break][break]

Gavin is not the worst among Rocket, but this does not make him kind. They have shaped him into something as sharp and lethal as the rest. Amber eyes reflect the surge of flames sent forth as the heat sears against his fair skin.[break][break]

"You think you can tame something you don't understand?"[break][break]

Lugia's pokeball is heavy as the burden of its condition. Gavin releases it amidst the swirling sands and it shrieks, a violent and terrifying sound that precedes the RAIN that descends upon them. It cancels out the sands and douses the flames, and the red-eyed glare of the corrupted Pokemon is turned upon the now-cowering defectors. It was not as poetic as the justice would have been were it delivered by Katherine's Blacephalon, but it would have to do.[break][break]

A STORM OF SHADOW engulfs the Weezing. Lugia shows no mercy nor restraint; these are words it no longer knows. It is Gavin's mercy that sees him return the beast before it can turn its wrath upon the trainers.[break][break]

With the source of the spreading smog dealt with, Gavin sends a message along to Katherine Fairburne: A few degenerates wanted the clown, but they're dealt with. Meet us past the quarantine in Mauville.[break][break]

He'll let her deal with them in whatever way she sees fit.
