Every passing day, even as the world began to show signs of color, Adrian was haunted by streaks of crimson upon a deafening field of black. Canvases that he'd robbed of their own color in order to saturate his own, an immoral trespass that should have gone unfulfilled. He can't take it back, it was a sin that couldn't be undone. What had been unmade was to never again be whole. Life could be spent but once before it was lost that starweald above, forever out of reach.[break][break]

With a desperate wish he'd exhausted theirs, and signed away his own.[break][break]

If ever there were a meaning to the name Adrian, it had been long lost to an antithetical homonym. Where a delinquent, misguided soul had once pursued the prestige and title of champion resided only a marred husk resigned to the notion that he was now undeserving, unwelcome in his own skin. Even if it had been done by his own volition, it had not served that so esteemed 'greater good'.[break][break]

It wasn't until lately that he'd completely abandoned the careful construction of his own self-image, realizing himself for the degenerate that he'd always been. With the burdening weight of guilt bearing upon him, Adrian found his resolve crumbling. He wanted to confide in someone, or something... but to do so would be to admit he was complicit with death. There was no out, not this time.[break][break]

And yet for all his transgressions, he has come to be seduced by the promise of power, and his once insatiable lust for recognition is only preyed upon and amplified by the direct intervention of his dark benefactor. Still he finds himself in contest with his peers, the only change is the perception of where he lies on his own scale of right and wrong. To the world, he is perhaps unchanged. A misfit.[break][break]

...But the world would always love a bad boy.

On this day Adrian required certain... assurances. Without any other recourse, Adrian set out to the battle hut to give 'em hell, if only to draw out their brass. It's not the craftiest plan, nor the most elaborate, but it is sure to attract the attention of event organizers. Anyone with a stake in them would surely point Adrian the right way; where he needed to be... to the mind and muscles of the battle hut.[break][break]

"Are you fucking joking," he chortles through a dissatisfied grin as his Grimmsnarl finishes off the rather unimpressive contenders within the chain fence, which it had forced its way into by prying the lock open with its prehensile locks of hair before ambushing them. Already he'd caused a bit of an upset, the crowd roaring with disapproval. Some were eyeing him suspiciously, perhaps vetting his intentions after taking the stage, but it all came naturally to him...[break][break]

"Send someone better," he'd command from the center stage, all eyes on him.

Gavin steps from the shadows that had shrouded him. He had watched as this challenger had chewed up and spat out some of their most promising talent, men and women whose names were spoken in hushed whispers among regulars. Those regulars who found themselves among Rocket's ilk would recognize their underboss as he rolls back his shoulders and crushes the butt of a cigarette beneath his heel. The crowd parts for him as he approaches the ring. Not all knew he was Rocket, but most understood his strength.[break][break]

He pins the man beneath a piercing amber stare. We've met.[break][break]

Gavin shrugs off his jacket and hands it off to one of his associates. Along his left forearm, geometric patterns fail to completely conceal a network of old scars that line his skin with white. It's with his left hand that he reaches for a pokeball.[break][break]

The ball spins, breaks in midair with a blinding flash that reveals the snarling visage of his Lycanroc. The dark blue fur of the werewolf seems to drink in the dim lighting of the cage. Red eyes burn dark with fury.[break][break]

It is with an ecstatic smile that he is joined by... a familiar face, one ingrained into memory, but for no one reason. It is a face that has perhaps been shadowing him, although he wouldn't know it. In the end it mattered little, as it was his mettle he wished to test, and nothing more. A challenge had been issued, and this was the vassal sent in response. What more could he have hoped for? Silence falls.[break][break]

"More than you might care to know," he muttered back in a voice like vitriol, his eyes like a blood moon hanging over a blackened sky, before they shimmered with their usual color, the former lapse in normalcy ostensibly imagined.[break][break]

A pokeball was exchanged on his belt, benching the Grimmsnarl and giving it a moment's respite while he rummaged for a pokeball he was more keen on. It held more sentimental value to him than anything, which is why he clutched it against himself in a gesture of respect before leveling the apparatus at the vacant field, a dazzling gleam enveloping the attentive eye as a new contender took to the field in a radiant splendor.
It snarled and held itself low, growls rolling off its tongue.[break][break]

An intimidating specimen Sirius was, wreathed in a sweltering heat that punished those who even dare stood in its presence. And yet it bore almost no resemblance to that disarming charisma that was Howitzer's, but that was to be expected. It was by design. Denied the comfort of love, Sirius was the culmination of Adrian's training and a byproduct of the year's harrowing experiences...[break][break]

"Sirius, time to get warmed up," he ordered as the room became a furnace.

Sharp eyes catch the change in the other's, so fleeting it might've been imagined — but Gavin is not prone to such delusions. The amber eyes that glint from behind his glasses never leave Adrian's. "Mm. You'd be surprised."[break][break]

An Arcanine reveals itself as his opponent, and Gavin briefly admires its majesty.[break][break]

Despite being situated underground, the close, cramped quarters leave the air in the arena sweltering long before the Arcanine's presence summons the wrath of the sun. Gavin scowls as he slides another cigarette from its carton. For a blissful moment, the match used to light it overrides the stench of booze and sweat with that of sulfur. Gavin exhales, smoke softening the sharp angles of his features, then holds out the carton in a silent offer to his challenger.[break][break]

"I fucking hate the heat."[break][break]

His Lycanroc is directed with actions, not words. The red eyes of the wolf seem to glow in the unnatural light shed upon the concrete battlefield — they fix upon their master, waiting. A quick signal is all it needs.[break][break]

Drawing upon the oppressive heat, Lycanroc's claws erupt in flames. Snarling, it launches itself toward its foe with a FIERY PUNCH.

Yeah, right. Adrian sneered at the offer, declining it with a wave of the hand, though perhaps largely due to his particular tastes. That and he hadn't come here to fraternize, simply to find assurance in himself; in his abilities. Everything else was an unwelcome distraction to the spectacle unfolding before them as their Lycanroc encroached on Sirius, exploiting the effects of Sirius' own move against it. A shortsighted decision, he decided, knowing Howitzer more than capable of taking the brunt of such an attack... ...Sirius. He'd meant Sirius. Of course he had.[break][break]

A dip of his chin is all the encouragement Sirius needed to continue, before its body suddenly vanished from what the naked eye could discern, although Adrian could make out the hints of its silhouette flashing around to the Lycanroc's rear, evading the attack altogether with its world renowned Extreme Speed.[break][break]

Bowing its head and tucking its shoulders beneath the punch only to subsequently dart around the Lycanroc's telegraphed movements was without its challenge for a nimble quadruped, Sirius' low center of gravity and spry legs expanding the options of its footwork exponentially. As it wheeled back around on the Lycanroc, it lunged forward with a guttural growl before crashing into the foe's back with its shoulder, tackling against its diminutive stature.

Gavin shrugs as the offer is declined, indifferent. Amber eyes remain focused on the battle, the delicate dance of claw and fang that caused their audience to howl with excitement and rattle the cage, as if to further incense the dueling canines.[break][break]

Lycanroc's attention is on only his prey. Where some Pokemon elected to rely on a strong defense, Lycanroc had NO GUARD; it fought with reckless abandon, sacrificing safety for the certainty of violence. The Arcanine's blazing speed is matched with Lycanroc's savagery, its flaming fist finding purchase in spite of the odds. The damage would be negligible, but damage wasn't the point.[break][break]

Arcanine completes its maneuver and lunges from behind, bowling over the snarling werewolf. Lycanroc twists around as it falls and wrestles with the larger dog much like it had with its siblings in puppyhood: Gavin and Emma Wolfe had not discouraged him from PLAYING ROUGH.[break][break]

Gavin leans against the wall, cigarette poised between his fingers.[break][break]

Quite the response time... His back hurt just thinking of trying to twist that much, watching the Lycanroc's NO GUARD in action, voluntarily allowing a direct hit just to land one of its own. Neither moves would've been very effective, and yet Adrian wasn't so complacent about it. He's exploiting How-...Sirius' Sunny Day.[break][break]

He wears a scowl and furled brows, watching the struggle from a distance before Lycanroc decides to grapple with Sirius. His eyebrows raise with ephemeral excitability before he barks in command: "Overwhelm it; Close Combat!" Although Sirius is given a noteworthy pummeling, it trades blow for blow, matching the Lycanroc's tenacity while exacting a heavy toll on the opposing pokemon. But in doing so Sirius has lowered its guard, rendering it vulnerable.[break][break]

Where Gavin was more aloof and stoic, Adrian was on the edge of his metaphorical seat. If he could clinch this matchup... Well, that would say a lot about their time spent training. And even if they didn't, it was hardly a sure victory. But the wound inflicted to his ego would still mar his confidence.[break][break]

We can still win this... I know we can.

Close Combat. It's a move both Gavin and Lycanroc are well familiar with — and, due to the werewolf's innate recklessness, not one they could hope to avoid. Gavin's expression does not betray his concern for his Pokemon as he takes another long drag of his cigarette, but he observes the Rock-type carefully.[break][break]

For its part, Lycanroc is far too stubborn to let on how devastating the attack had been. Though the werewolf's rocky hide protected it from many physical attacks, the Fighting-type move shatters stone and causes Lycanroc to snarl in agonized fury.[break][break]

Gavin sees their chance.[break][break]

"Now, while its guard is down."[break][break]

Non-verbal signals betray no hint of their plans, but the white-hot glow that surrounds the wolf would be familiar to many who'd witnessed a Z-move in action. The whole arena quakes with the energy and several onlookers stumble back from the cage; Gavin has never utilized such force in the ring, for he does not often meet an opponent worthy of the effort. With the terrible sound of grinding stone, rocks slam up through the floor. Like SPLINTERED STORMSHARDS, they aim to pierce Arcanine's weakest points.

Adrian had not anticipated what would shortly follow, but managed to shout "Move!" before the attack had completely connect, though Arcanine was surely already making the necessary movements to avoid the worst of it. Sirius yelps as the floor is weaponized against it as rocky, jagged outcroppings begin to erupt from the arena upwards, forming a trail as they surrounded Sirius, stabbing at its underside and injuring its paws and lacerating its underside. Luckily Sirius is as nimble as it is agile, springing into the air and racing along the spires as if stepping along wind itself, circling to the edge of the cage before falling on an uncorrupted space of the arena.[break][break]

But even with that, Sirius was being cornered. Type disadvantages were just a bitch, plain and simple. "Sirius, Morning Sun." He's not as enthusiastic as before, knowing they've been backed up against a wall; instead he's leaning on critical thinking, or perhaps desperation, knowing their only out was beginning to close on them... But he needed to think beyond that.[break][break]

What would they do next? As Sirius' body began to glow, the wounds on its padded feet mending before aught else, Adrian remained wary of the Lycanroc and kept an eye on it rather than its trainer.

To see the Arcanine's valiant attempt to outrun its demise is impressive; the crowd is on the edge of their proverbial seats, and Gavin nods to himself. This one is something special. Not every Arcanine could stand up to a Lycanroc's Z-move and remain on their paws.[break][break]

And it can heal. What a nuisance.[break][break]

His placid expression betrays none of his thoughts. Gavin's cigarette burns down to the filter, and he drops it to the grungy earth and crushes it beneath his boot. He could just as easily order a rockslide and capitalize on the down time created by the fire-type's respite, but that would mean curbing an interesting battle too soon. There were tricks up their sleeve yet.[break][break]

"Perhaps a taste of their own medicine, Lycanroc."[break][break]

The werewolf glances to his trainer, who offers a silent signal of direction. Sharp canines flash with a feral grin as Lycanroc narrows the gap for some CLOSE COMBAT. Though weakened by a similar assault earlier in the fight, it had been trained to fight tooth and nail until the very end. Bloodied claws scrape along the Arcanine's flank and Lycanroc snarls with its bloodlust.

Arcanine would not make the first move, hoping to conserve its strength. As a beast in waiting it was an easy mark for Lycanroc, which closed in at its trainer's command, swiping and clawing at Sirius' flank. Where its nails dug into the flesh beneath the dense fur, red gouges tore asunder, the slightest graze rending its hide. Sirius loosed a gut-wrenching yelp that swiftly became an aggrieved snarling as it rounded on the Lycanroc, attempting to spin away.[break][break]

But the beast had dug itself in, the tangles of its pelt offering leverage as its grasp remained firm, Sirius futilely trying to spin around to its tail and reach the Lycanroc. As it circled around itself, it invariably found itself closed in on all sides by the stormshards, becoming increasingly desperate...[break][break]

"KICK IT OFF!"[break][break]

In an anguished furor Arcanine would thrash about towards the walls of stormshards surrounding it, bucking its hind legs with the force of its CLOSE COMBAT, hoping to repel its attacker with a well placed kick. Its foot to Lycanroc's belly, Sirius would expunge the werebeast from its haunches, perhaps even grinding it against the splintered remnants of its Z-Move...[break][break]

Lycanroc's yelp transitions into a snarl as it's thrown against the splintered rocks of its own attack. Its thick hide is not penetrated by the jutting rock, but the well-placed kick leaves it winded and panting for air as it struggles back to its paws.[break][break]

Gavin offers no command nor words of encouragement despite the tug of sympathy in his gut. Lycanroc had been raised to be vicious, brutal, efficient. It does not look to him for approval for it knows it can only be earned through victory over its opponent. Blood drips from its belly to stain the dirty concrete below. Its flank heaves with every breath.[break][break]

With its pain and its fury, it LASHES OUT toward the other canine, tearing with claws and teeth.

He can tell the fell blow for what it is as Sirius is brutalized by the beast's resultant frenzy, lashing out against its attacker with a series of well-struck blows that gnash at Arcanine's hide. As it's sent staggering back, crumpling against the floor, Adrian realizes the crowd is in an uproar as their battle draws near its conclusion. They can practically smell the blood in the air...[break][break]

"Use Morning Sun again!" What Adrian neglects to realize is that the effects of their Sunny Day have since expired, and what feeble amount of healing they can accomplish now means nothing to the Lycanroc gaining momentum in this climax of their exchange. Sirius is left to the mercy of Lycanroc as it licks its wounds.[break][break]

No, no no NO!!! It's frustrating for him, sitting at the sidelines, feeling all at once that he could've avoided this outcome while simultaneously feeling responsible.

Adrian's frustration, his compassion for the Arcanine that suffers in the absence of its sun, is his only downfall. Had the fiery canine chosen to strike out against Lycanroc, it may well have been the werewolf's end, but the attempt to soothe his Pokémon's pain only leaves it open to attack.[break][break]

"End it, Lycanroc."[break][break]

As the crowd's bloodthirst manifests in jeers and hollers, Lycanroc falls back on a LAST RESORT. With the fumes of its fading strength, Lycanroc lunges for the Arcanine's throat and sinks its fangs in, deep.[break][break]

Gavin's hand slams down on a button on the bar, and a shrill bell signifies the end of the match. Before his Pokémon can tear through the Arcanine's jugular as it's been trained to do, a red light swallows it whole and drags it back to the confines of its ball.[break][break]

The Rocket underboss turns to Adrian with a curt nod. "Drink with me."[break][break]

It sounds more like a demand than a request; Gavin moves toward a quiet end of the bar without waiting to see if Adrian would follow.
