She mentions the obvious but how much does she know about them. While Fernando cares little for formalities, disparaging his own colleagues isn’t the impression to instill a new team member. It’s better to let her observe and derive her own assessments before curating how he should address them.

A break in the clearing promises progress. The sudden downpour rains a parade on that hope, leaving their footing slick with a treacherous slide. He leads with digging his toes into the ground to gain traction. It leaves the rim covered in mud.

“I’ve only scratched the surface of what they can do. For instance, supposedly, Stormy can fly although we’ve yet to determine how high, how far, or for how long.”

A simplistic answer built from a decade of experience. It only takes several let-downs to embed a tendency to devalue self assessments. That’s why Fernando remains meticulous in planning around them. That’s why he doesn’t trust them.

“You expect it and calculate accordingly. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.”

The Weather Institute comes into view despite the unending rain. The only obstacle in their way is distance and the hardships that comes with crossing it.

“Can you do that? Not everyone can be that pessimistic.”
