“apparently, those clown chasers in mauville aren't the only rocket renegades.” valerio fills in Cillian Quinn with the brief as he drives them to a shady spot at the slateport outskirts. he should know this as a favorite spot among rocket members, being able to navigate among various cliques in the organization without being loyal to one. “most of them got scared when they witnessed the ultra beast and the legendaries during that meeting. while the few others... as you know, they become greedy.”[break][break]

the redhead finally stops in-front of an underground bar. the place looks like a small, private establishment with a narrow corridor of an entrance guarded by a very muscular man. the hall is dark, no lights seeping through pockets of what seems an undiscovered refuge in the bustling port city.[break][break]

“rocket is strong. there is no doubt in that. but this tendency to be afraid of change... isn't it what's holding us back from our true potential?” he turns off the engine before he rolls down his window, waving at the bouncer who recognizes him. “anyway, i already confirmed their location here so all that's left to do is to deal with them. let's go?”[break][break]

Gavin's sigh is heavy. "Rocket will never run dry of renegades."[break][break]

They haunt him in the evening hours as he struggles to sleep, with no work to distract his mind from the threat of collapse. Rocket was a delicate entity forever teetering on the brink of discovery by the League.[break][break]

"Holding others back, perhaps." He'd served under four Rocket bosses in his time with the organization, had seen admins and underbosses come and go. Sometimes, he misses the simple sanctuary of the science labs where they'd been little to him but names and faces. "Those that don't embrace the change will be consumed by it one way or another."[break][break]

With the window rolled down, Gavin breathes smoke into the warm air. When they come to a stop, Gavin steps from the car and crushes the butt beneath his boot.[break][break]

he can't help himself but agree with Cillian Quinn. most people find rockets as means for their personal goals. Valerio Dachev included. few manage to plunge deeper into its sinister secrets but those that dare to flee after are handled, in one way or another.[break][break]

in all fairness, the redhead prefers anything that involves not washing his hands with blood, but he frowns at people who do not dare to go out of their comforts.[break][break]

“we'll cheer to that later.” he snaps back before slamming the van's door.[break][break]

he retrieves a packet full of dirty cash and hands it over to the machamp-like guy who then scoots to allow them passage. valerio calls on his dragonairs who playfully encircles around the rockets, illuminating the dim corridor with their cerulean orbs.[break][break]

“so, is this the way change consumes them or nah?” valerio's whisper is quiet but it reverberates throughout as they descend the alley. “the order is actually to ‘eliminate them.’ so how do you try to interpret these words, mister underboss?”[break][break]

Gavin ghosts past the doorman without so much as a greeting, moving with the confidence of a man who's been here before. He hasn't. His steps echo softly as they make their way down.[break][break]

"I interpret the meaning clearly enough."[break][break]

His hand brushes metal beneath his jacket. Eliminate had only one meaning in this sort of scenario, and Gavin would not hesitate to carry out orders. He pulls the gun and cocks it. At his heels, a midnight Lycanroc appears, dripping saliva from grinning jaws.[break][break]

“damn. you really do get cold, don't you?” he titters watching him retrieve the steel from the holster. an image of astonishment and admiration.[break][break]

“only those three are targets.” the ex-associates are seated conveniently next to each other, mouths gaping with surprise as they greet the executive and the underboss on the bar's doorsteps with fearing eyes. “but the mission also calls for taking care of any possible witnesses. i guess i'll take care of that?”[break][break]

he flicks his fingers for dee and dum to enter the premises, their serpentine bodies slithering through the air as they keep the crowd from interfering with rocket matters.[break][break]

It's his insides that are cold, a frigid vise closing around his chest and making it hard to breathe. The gun's cold, too, the metal against his fingertips. His hands are remarkably steady. His tone, too, as he replies, "I've got to be."[break][break]

His aim, as he lifts the gun and fires three times.[break][break]

The third shot misses, for the man on the end has enough time to recognize his fate and scramble free. The shot hits a bottle of vodka on a shelf behind the bar, shattering it and scattering glass and clear liquid.[break][break]

Their target sends out a Weezing.[break][break]

"Valerio, GET DOWN!"[break][break]

Gavin hits the floor and covers his head, but the explosion still assaults his ear and sets them ringing. There's heat and noise and chaos and he recovers quick because he has to, because that's the man that Rocket has raised.[break][break]

He staggers to his feet. "Valerio?"[break][break]

He's yelling louder than he needs to over the droning in his ears.

gavin's warning is just on time. when the underboss shouts his name, warning the redhead of the explosion, his dragonairs dart themselves into their trainers, dashing with extremespeed and agility to save him from the impact.[break][break]

“nice call!” he responds beneath the rubbles. the targets, although injured, manages to escape the pub and they are left with no choice but to chase them and finally mission.[break][break]

“at least you've handled the witnesses. time to finish the job. they surely haven't gotten far yet.”[break][break]

valerio commands his pokemons with a whistle: dee and dum break the remaining columns that support the structure to bury the survivors alive. at least if they're not dead yet, they would just wish they are. he nods to gavin and begins to chase the ex-grunts.[break][break]

Gavin's ears are still ringing. His head swings toward their fleeing target in a motion that makes him feel dizzy, nauseous, then back to Valerio Dachev as he speaks.

"Go," he orders, "I'll catch up."

He can't run with his balance compromised by tinnitus, but his Pokemon can. He is not far behind Valerio, needing only enough time to send out his Tyrantrum and clamber aboard. With her strong jaw, the regal dinosaur tears through what remains of the doorway and lowers her head to charge through after the fleeing witnesses and the Rocket executive.

Once they're out into the night, Gavin sends out a Lycanroc who lunges forward with frothing jaws and a rippling snarl. As the building crumbles behind, the werewolf races ahead to bring one of the ex-Rockets to their knees. Blood sprays from a wound that opens in the man's throat, choking off his yell.

Leaving behind the underboss, Valerio goes for a rapid chase with the targets that flee the vicinity. As far as Valerio recalls, aside from the ones Cillian Quinn's pokemon has taken care of, there are still three of them. The moment they spot him from behind, they immediately scatter to confuse the executive.

They don't know those tricks don't work because the moment the two turns to a fork, his dragonairs follow them and attempt to drive them back into a corner.

As for the remaining grunt within Valerio's path, “Don't you think you can escape me, you rascal.”

He does not speak for he knows what the veteran is capable of. It is because he's among the few rockets who have trained him in battling when he's relatively new.

“What are you gonna do now? You have nowhere to go to.”

“At least I'm the only one who you caught! My companions are gonna tell you to the police!”

“How are you so sure?”

Two more grunts show up at the corner where they are being chased off by the dragons. Their faces paint fear as his dragons begin to bind them with their serpentine bodies, coiling from the torso then into the chest then into their necks, squeezing the soul out of their bodies.
