Hi Stormy Silph , thank you for helping with this field test for the upcoming opening of the Lavaridge gym.
Your (unofficial) gym challenge in the PLAINS biome has been accepted! I've reviewed your Pokemon's moveset and ability.

Remember all Pokemon can use the Dodge action to negate damage, regardless of their moveset.

Zac had only just sent the email and already he was nervous. The first full scale test of the gym's battle systems! "Oh man, this is gonna be amazing!" he said, grinning out at the battleground. The open, arena-sized section of flooring looked like it had been transplanted straight from the fields of Kanto. There were dozens of varieties of lush grasses, tangled shrubs, and even a few low, hardy trees dotting the field. Zac was pretty sure he had even seen a Pidgey nesting in one of them earlier. Surrounding the oval-shaped section of grassland were several tiers of empty seating, and the whole setup was protected by a mechanical roof, currently closed.
Ideally they would be testing in full sunlight, but Zac wanted to keep at least a few secrets, hence the night battle. Hopefully the blazing stadium lights would serve as an ample replacement for sunlight.

Now all he had to do was wait.

Stormy had read and re-read the email over and over to get the details straight. Things had definitely changed since she had been gym leader of Lavaridge town. In fact, the entire town had practically changed overnight, and it was starting to creep up on her just how little she paid attention. It was as if she was just seeing the gym now for the first time.[break][break]

And she took her time walking towards the front desk, her attention slowly panning over the room to settle on 'Qurtney's' nametag. She smiles briefly, greeting the woman. She's directed to the battleground, and Stormy is visibly blown-away by how fantastic it looks. [break][break]

'Apollo would love it here.'[break][break]

It reminded her of home so much that it left a lump in her chest that rose to her throat. She glances up at the stadium lights, squinting a bit beneath their blazing glory. Beneath them, she spots the familiar shape of the man she's here to challenge... unofficially. Her smile widens.[break][break]

"That means a lot, comin' from you," Zac said, and he smiled out at the lush fields. He pulled himself up straight, sizing up his first combatant. "Let's not fall short on the trappings, 'ay? If you're here for a battle lets make it a proper one."
Zac cleared his throat. "All challengers must complete the educational objective, which includes answering some questions before and after the battle. So tell me Stormy,"

"Why did you pick Rapidash and Donphan?"

"What is your current goal as a trainer?"

She answered, and Zac's smile widened. "Fantastic! I expected nothing less from you, to be honest. Let's get right into it then!"
He whistled, and there was movement out in the field as his Doduo sprinted over to him. "You remember Big Habanero, don't you?" Zac asked. "He's grown, hasn't he? He's an absolute terror out in the wide open plains."
The bird Pokemon stood restlessly, shuffling from foot to foot, with one of his heads looking at Stormy, his former trainer, and the other plucking at a loose feather in his side.

"Look at him! He's ready to rock and roll."

Stormy smirks, but stands at attention and measures his words carefully so as to give him appropriate and insightful answers. [break][break]

"Rapidash -- Apollo -- is my oldest friend, and he compliments Donphan very well. They are both trusted and reliable companions."[break][break]

Zac's wide smile is encouraging, and the intensity of her gaze softens, as does the stiffness in her shoulders. The man whistles, and out sprints a young, spry Doduo - one she recognizes immediately. Stormy laughs out loud, nodding.[break][break]

"What an excellent name for an excellent Pokemon."[break][break]

From her belt, Stormy releases her own restless steed. Diamond hooves dig into the dry earth, kicking up sand and grass. He snorts, glancing to Stormy briefly, before settling his sights on the Doduo.[break][break]

"Go on, Apollo, show 'em what you've got."[break][break]

She gives the stallion a gesture of encouragement, patting his rump as the Pokemon prances forward. There is a glint in his eye, a challenge, and he sprints across the field with a spurt of agility.[break][break]

Zac watched in awe as the gorgeous grey equine galloped across the fields. It looked at home, moving with such speed.
"A marvellous name, and a stunning specimen. But you know who else loves to run? Get in there Big Habanero!"
The Doduo gave a happy squark and shot off after Rapidash. Both heads down low and feet beating against the firm dirt, the bird sprinted across the plains. In a true wild setting, the Rapidash could have run forever, but in here he had to turn eventually, and Doduo put on a burst of speed as he closed in to intercept Apollo for the first strike. He sprinted up alongside the horse and threw both heads against the flaming beast.

Stormy smiles fondly as the Doduo bounces out onto the field. It's long legs eat up the distance just as easily as Apollo's do, and the stallion is momentarily surprised by the burst of enthusiasm from the small, flightless bird. [break][break]

It doesn't stop him, however, and he is acutely aware of how quickly the bird comes up on his side. When it lashes out for a double hit, Apollo side-steps, swishing his tail to disorient. The Doduo's beaks miss shearing his hide, and he responds with a fantastically glowing smart strike, bearing down the Doduo with steel ferocity.[break][break]

Smart Strike never misses.
Zac shouted a warning to the bobble-headed bird, but the words were lost in the distance and thundering hooves. Apollo's horn slashed like a sword, running a glowing wound along the fluffy body of the little bird.
<Doooooooou!> It squarked, and Big Habanero was so shocked by the wound that one head fell unconscious. It was a drastic defence, but one that sent healing energy coursing through Doduo.

The remaining head assumed full control. It was amazing. An entire body, united under a singular purpose. Doduo pelted after its assailant, one head flopping. The lively head let out a honking battle cry, echoed in its dreams by his snoozing twin.
The combined cry was a loud and obnoxious avian airhorn.

The horn slashes against the Doduo's furry hide, knocking one of the heads limp. It is honestly quite startling, and Stormy's eyes widen and she stands on her tiptoes to try and get a better look at the situation.[break][break]

Somehow, the pair continue to barrel on, running wild against the open field. They kick up dust, and in that confusion, the Rapidash is caught off-guard by the snore.[break][break]

Apollo veers off suddenly with another burst of agility, before coming back around to attempt to blast the Doduo with a fire blast. It explodes from his horn in the shape of a star, enveloping his frame before pushing outward, all-consuming.[break][break]

  A roaring star of hungry flame cut a swathe through the low grasses of the battlefield. Doduo skittered away from the roasting arms of the attack, but even being nearby was enough to blister their skin and burn up patches of their furry feathers.
"Hey, careful with that!" Zac said to Stormy, as the pair watched from the sidelines. Doduo was spry enough to dodge most anything, but there was geniune worry in Zac's voice. "I still want to have a Pokemon once the battle's done!"
    It was enough to shock their second head awake, and the pair struggled for a second as control slipped back to a shared medium. They turned in a tight spin, flicking dirt as they raced at their attempted roaster. With a burst of powerful legs Doduo threw themselves at Rapidash, heads whipping around like dual flails.

And those dual flails are nigh impossible to dodge. In fact, one of them, a real sucker from the right, swings in to pierce the Rapidash's shoulder before he could spring away. He kicks up dirt to avoid the first attack with his agility, spraying dust in his wake. It isn't enough to dodge the second attack, however, and he blows hot air from his nostrils as he pulls back.[break][break]

But when he composes himself, he comes bearing down, swinging his head in a wide arc to clash against the Doduo with his mega horn. This time, his horn glows and extends, but it doesn't sharpen into steel or burst into flame. [break][break]

MUSIC

Encouraged by its successful hit, Doduo's dual heads let out a crow of victory. A premature celebration that was interrupted by swift retribution from Rapidash. Apollo's glowing horn battered Doduo, whose left head instantly fell asleep.

Back in solo control, their more aggressive head brought their body to its feet. Keen eyes followed Rapidash. Not the eyes of a stocky bird, but of a predator separated from raptors by a scant few million years.

With a burst of dust it shot towards Apollo, keeping low and to the side of the horse. It lined up and launched itself through the air, this time with pedalling, slashing talons.

Once again, the Doduo's second head falls limp the moment it is struck. Fortunately, Apollo is more alert this time and prepared for such a reaction. As a result, when the aggressive little spring chicken comes flying at him, talons extended, Apollo sprints away a second time. [break][break]

Unfortunately, it leaves him winded. The stallion's sides heave with the exertion, sweat foaming at his sides. He's breathing heavily, but he seems to refuse to back down. Had he had more energy or more room, he would have already begun his own road to recovery. Alas, it didn't work out in his favour - at least, not yet.[break][break]

One head still bowed in sleep, Doduo landed in a patch of thin and scraggly grass. He was in his element, all sure feet and slicing beak. His feathers were singed and torn, and was clouded in guttering smoke and plains dust. It was wonderful. The only thing that spoiled the epic moment was the snoring of his other head. It did nothing to restore his will to fight. Probably dreaming of lying in the sun and chewing on sunflower seeds.

His opponent was panting hand, and he turned on the horse. With the pure control of an un-shared mind, he lunged at Apollo. His beak jabbed with proud, confident snaps as he sought to pierce his foe. With each precise stab he twisted, his beak drilling through the air to find his opponent's hide

Before he knows it, a beak is driving its way into the tender bits of his hindquarters. He is too tired to continue, and he succumbs to his injuries, bruised ego and all. [break][break]

Stormy sighs, shaking her head. With a curt whistle, she calls the stallion back, watching as the brute hangs his head and meanders back, all bruises and scratches and dirt. [break][break]

"This is what happens when you go too hard all at once, old man. You get your ass beat."[break][break]

With a wave of her hand, she encourages him to go out to pasture, so to speak. In her hand, she pulls out her second pokeball, releasing her much livelier Donphan.[break][break]

"Go get em, baby!"[break][break]

The ground-type doesn't need further encouragement. She tucks herself into a compact defense curl that spurs her into a rapid rollout. She comes barreling down toward the Doduo, fully intent on trampling the two-headed chicken.[break][break]

Apollo lifts his head to observe quietly, chewing tufts of grass idly as his attention follows the battle lazily.[break][break]
