Reyna Esprit, from her very inception, possessed a heart entirely too empathetic. She could not allow others to suffer around her, or otherwise she didn’t function. She couldn’t; she just turned into a blubbering mess. Playtime at day care stopped until all conflict was resolved and all was well, according to Reyna. If her quite visceral sobbing garnered no action, she easily dwarfed most of the other grade-schoolers by a head and a half. She’d force them to make up if she had to, standing over them with cheeks puffed and tears streaming. With age came the ability to keep her tears in, and she directed that energy to being a guardian presence around the other children. Sitting with those with no lunchmates, tutoring those who asked, and eventually getting into the simple science of basic Pokemon care. New trainers, kids she grew up with and hesitant to leave on their journey, got their Pokemon and themselves hurt even during the most low-intensity training. [break][break]

She stood by at local bouts, keeping an eye on scratches and scrapes, twisted wings or tentacles, and then escorting those too battered for her help to the Center. She never really understood why, though. The kids didn’t immediately go to Nurse Joy, but to her. It wasn’t until the boy who would eventually become her husband spelled it out to her.[break][break]

“You’re good. You should learn, and help everyone.”[break][break]

Reyna even attained her own Pokemon, a Stantler, when she started secondary school. She fought this boy for the first time on the field and learned two things. First, she didn’t care much for battling. Second, this boy and his passion infected her to her bones. He dreamed of championing Johto, becoming a grand example of commitment and drive. She loved his team to pieces, and would care for all of them. She could work at the Center when she got trained proper, maybe even travel with him. They could-[break][break]

They became parents too soon. Stuffed into a studio apartment, the two put their goals on hold. Well, not entirely; Reyna did manage to become a nurse at the Ercuteak Pokemon Center, specializing in Pokemon physical therapy. Long-term treatment that needed a stable, assured personality and a consistency in quality. Even with her life slowly crumbling into that of domestic entrapment, she managed her work quite well. She mustered every fiber of her heart and buried it into her work. She suffered enough at home, watching Wayne realize traveling the region became a dream rather than his plan. He trained less and less. He got a job at the Mart. He released all but Delphi, his Cubone. She stood by him when he said goodbye, watching him resign himself to this. He loved their daughter so much. In that moment, he chose to be a father more than the night in the Bell Tower. [break][break]

He gave up who he was, and it wasn’t meant to be that he became someone new. Swinub Flu racked many in the city the next winter. He quarantined in the Center for 3 days, and it was through the office phone that she said her goodbyes to him. With Delphi, Stanty, and her daughter to care for, she again threw herself at her work. Friends from school were willing to watch them while she buried her emotions deeper. The pain bore down and down and down, reducing this once exuberant woman into a shell. [break][break]

Her daughter disappeared only a year or so later. Driftloon, said the report. A search party went on for 3 days with no luck and it took 8 months for Reyna to come to terms with that. It took her another 5 years to dig up her heart from ground, to come to terms with the fact that she was single, almost 30, and still hadn’t left her hometown. She walked a trench of a rut for a decade and change. She watched awful dramas when she came home from work just in an attempt to feel some vicarious something. She got a call from one of her girlfriends from secondary, about a bad injury her Milotic suffered at a ‘Contest’. She mentioned she was passing through, and so would be looking forward to Reyna taking care of her. Over the course of therapy, she saw every piece of wardrobe, heard every story, saw her every routine. [break][break]

She broke her lease the next week.[break][break]
