You’re the oldest of three siblings, and you’re secretly afraid of fucking up. But of course you don’t want to disappoint your parents. Early on you learn that your father’s dealing in really shady, unscrupulous shit—and you try to tell your mother, but she doesn’t listen.[break][break]
Maybe it’s out of love, maybe it’s also out of fear—you can never tell.[break][break]
So you ignore it and live life as usual, making a few childhood friends here and there. While one of them seems closer to your younger brother, for some weird reason it’s you he likes to hang out with more. (Maybe because Claude was such a tool, and you could never really understand your younger brother’s thought processes anyway. Maybe the same could be said of Léanne, your younger sister.)[break][break]
You’re too busy growing up to notice that your mother has disappeared—mere weeks after she’d given you your first Pokémon companion, the Mudkip you affectionately call ‘Suijin’. Nobody knows where she’d gone off to, all three of you ask your father where she’d left, and he dismissively tells you that she’d left you behind for some other man.[break][break]
…but you know it’s a fucking lie, because you know that your mother is loyal to him to a fault. You can tell with the stars in her eyes whenever she talks to him.[break][break]
The truth doesn’t come out until much later, when a decapitated body is fished out of the crater lake that you call home—and then you see it.[break][break]
You recognize who they’d brought out when they found her head a few hours later.[break][break]
Righteous anger flares inside of you, and you try to corner your father for answers—but he refuses to give them to any one of you three, no matter how hard you would ask. Unable to stand it, you decide to take shit into your own hands.[break][break]
Telling your siblings to be safe, you run away from home, stopping by that one friend’s house and asking them for that long-standing favor to take care of your siblings while you’re away. Well, not away
away, but you get the point.[break][break]
Determined to isolate yourself from the jackass of a father, you throw yourself deep into the world outside Sootopolis at the age of sixteen. Deciding that staying in Hoenn was too dangerous, you decide to go back to the birthplace of your mother—Alto Mare in Johto,
an entire region away. Maybe some time away from Sootopolis would do you
some good.[break][break]
Once you arrived in Alto Mare, you sought out Mom’s family, and stayed with them.
Of course they were overjoyed to see you, having heard a lot thanks to the letters she would send back home. The next few years fly by, with you living with your relatives and returning to the ‘roots’ of your mother’s native language.[break][break]
During the time spent in Alto Mare, you’d made up your mind to join the Rangers there, spending the time going through the training regimen and eventually building up much-needed experience. Eventually, it was time to—head
back, even if you
didn’t want to—and you were transferred from the Alto Marean branch of the Rangers to…[break][break]
Back home.[break][break]
Back to the place you swore you wouldn’t return to as long as ‘he’ was there.[break][break]
Thankfully, at least, when you checked,
‘he’ wasn’t there. You wondered if Claude and Léanne had heeded your warning and fled the region altogether.[break][break]
You return to Hoenn at the age of twenty-one, joining the local Ranger force stationed there.[break][break]
And then you swore to yourself that you would stop smoking, a habit you picked up back in Alto Mare.[break][break]
If you could quit cold turkey, then you could handle it.[break][break]
…yeah, right.[break][break]
That obviously didn’t work.
