After ensuring the child's condition was stable, the first place Gavin goes is home.

Only it won't be home, soon enough, and that's knowledge that haunts him as he crosses the threshold with miasma in his lungs. Breath shudders with the effort of containing powers he's not accustomed to wielding, a sigh released upon the closing of the door.

Sanctuary. Safe, for now.

What strength Lugia had bestowed during the battle has fled him, leaving him drained and hollow. He knows its exhaustion as well as his own, the battle with Yveltal taking no small toll upon the shadowed legend. Its influence is absent from his thoughts.

He is an avatar, an underboss, a force to be reckoned with, and yet he still seeks the comfort of his partner in the collapse. Sinking into the couch, he beckons Emma Wolfe to join him. Tired eyes retain the color of dark rubies from a disguise not yet shed.

"We got the tree," he mumbles, shivers. Wisps of miasma follow the words.

It is days before her assignment is to be handled. Days before her body would be riddled with scars, her throat raw with seawater, before she'd come to realize that though she had witnessed the life leave Melody Miro's body, the woman would still be very alive and well, traipsing across the news as if nothing had happened.[break][break]

If only she knew what was to come.[break][break]

Instead, the woman glances over her shoulder at the arrival of him. She can hear the exhaustion in his footsteps, the relief behind his shuffling gait. He beckons and she comes, watching him quietly for a moment before joining him on the couch. She doesn't dote, but she does remain.[break][break]

For a moment his appearance is unfamiliar, she is lost in the red of his eyes. For a moment, she mistakes them for Lugia's influence.[break][break]

She needs not dote to be a comfort; her presence alone is enough to soothe him, his weight pressing against hers where their shoulders meet. Though their colour reflects that of the legend housed within, tired eyes belong to Gavin alone.

"A lot happened," he confirms, the pulse of his breath dispersing shadow. "We had a plan, but Delarosa—"

There's a growl in the gravel of his voice as he mentions bryan delarosa's name. Gavin allows it to roll from his tongue like a curse before trailing off; annoyed though he was with the man, he was far from the worst culprit.

"Yveltal showed up and tried to kill us. All of us."

He communicates in a monotone that doesn't suit the tension. He's so tired.

He leans into her more than might be normal. It prompts her to set herself to be his rock, his support, though she does not lay her arms around him in any soft of way other than perhaps to rest her hand against his leg.[break][break]

Shadow spills from between his lips and she chooses to look past it, to pull her attention away from the red in his eyes, from the coldness in his posture that is so strangely unfamiliar. To dwell on it is to drive her mad, and so she chooses to focus on his words, on the rasp of his tone and the comfort it brings.[break][break]

"Yveltal? Another legendary Pokemon?"[break][break]

Another God? It laid yet another brick in her suspicion that something was coming. More and more Gods had come to live amongst men, putting down roots in an attempt to do.. something. What, she had no idea - and she knew that she may never know. [break][break]

"It appears that it did not succeed."[break][break]

There is no humor in her tone. She studies his face cautiously, softened only by the exhaustion in his tone and tilt of his cheek.[break][break]

He forgets, in the haze of his own thoughts, that not everyone knows.

"Yes," he confirms of Yveltal. "It was Lugia who said it's name."

There's a stirring in his thoughts as the slumbering deity acknowledges its own. He pauses, as if listening for a voice that Emma Wolfe cannot hear, then continues.

"The tree stopped it, I think. Yveltal destroyed the route, I'm sure it'll be all over the news—" He grimaces, knows he will be as well, in reputation though not in name. "—but the tree, it's like it fought back. You remember Littleroot?"

The question is all but rhetorical; how could either of them forget?

She is perceptive, and to hear him mention Lugia and watch the pause he takes suggests to her that it might not be just him that she is speaking with. The thought is enough to make her skin crawl, but she is able to swallow that discomfort to remain focused on Gavin.[break][break]

"The tree was dormant then. Are you suggesting that it isn't just a tree? That it's alive- in more ways than merely growing tall?"[break][break]

Frankly, she had been surprised to hear it was even still alive. She was sure that the combination of poison and the explosion had been enough to destroy it for good-- clearly not.[break][break]

"That's exactly what I'm suggesting."

The meeting with Walsh had been uncomfortable for Emma Wolfe, he knows, but Gavin had hung onto every word.

"Walsh called it 'a Xerneas' life tree'. There's more than one, it seems, and they harbor the deity's power." He remembers the news that had come out of Littleroot, following the disaster, of the two presumed deceased who had been spotted hale and healthy. "We cut one head from a Hydreigon, but the rest grow on."

Now, Walsh requested they secure the trees in place of destroying them. Gavin can't help but to wonder what had changed.

"With the tree, I'm not sure," he admits, "but after Yveltal attacked, Lugia came to our defense."

Though he doesn't call attention to it, his wording gives hint to the legend's role in that decision. It had not been Gavin to call upon its aid.

"We fought off Yveltal, but the League will know of our allegiance, now."

Given the recent events filled with aliens, legendary Pokemon and the like, an immortal, life-giving tree didn't seem too far-fetched. Still, it was exhausting, and she can't help but feel that weight, that burden of knowledge he had shared sit across her shoulders now, too.[break][break]

"Perhaps Walsh needs it to keep his precious eternal flower alive."[break][break]

She glances away only to return at the mention of Lugia. The woman masks her disgust well, but it helps that her concern bleeds through. Once again, his words carry more truth than he wishes to share. It is what he doesn't say that speaks loudly.[break][break]

Walsh is mentioned, and both of them look away.

She does not trust him as Gavin does. Where Gavin sees potential for Rocket's progress, Emma Wolfe must see something else. It prickles uncomfortably at the back of Gavin's neck, but he says nothing.

It's quiet for a moment until she asks of a plan; his gaze shifts back to her, softens.

Our.

Gavin shifts his weight on the couch, turns his body toward hers. His hands are steady as they wrap around her fingers, despite the racing in his heart, because he has been through so much worse. Discomfiting as Lugia's presence may have been to Emma, for Gavin it soothes.

"We'll need to move." He glances around the familiar Fallarbor living space, sighs. "Wouldn't be surprised if A.Q.U.A turns the region upside down looking for the two rogue avatars that destroyed a Route."

Emma shifts when he shifts, enabling the man to come closer, to become entangled in her. Their closeness, at one point, would have brought her discomfort. Now it only serves to bring her peace. She had never been one to allow for kindness, to allow for someone to come close enough to harm her.[break][break]

But with him, everything she knew had changed overnight.[break][break]

She squeezes his fingers, tightening her grip to encourage his own. More than anything, she knows, is that he needs her. He needs her confidence, her faith, her support. He needs her with him, needs her to understand. And although that, at some times, is difficult, she has never swayed from loving him.[break][break]

Much as he's learned to shut others out, much as Rocket's taught him that love is a weakness to be exploited, Gavin is grateful for the presence that grounds his own. Miasma swirls from his fingertips, unbidden, but it would not hurt Emma Wolfe as it curves around the planes of her skin. It wouldn't feel like anything at all.

For all they have taken, it is always Rocket he thinks of first.

"Sootopolis," he murmurs. "I want to take Sootopolis."

Funny, how a city he'd once loathed had become a jewel among the rubble. Lugia would like Sootopolis, he thinks. A house along the water, a city where Rocket could roam with their guards down. An alternative to the fucking submarine.

She blinks, instinctively tensing as the miasma brushes against skin- but her eyes reopen when she finds there is no sensation. And she opens them because there is a steadiness to the way he affirms. [break][break]

Slowly, deliberately, Emma parses through his decision at the same time she slides her fingers through his. It separates the swirling darkness at his fingertips where she moves, pulling him closer. She holds onto him, as if she were to be his anchor.[break][break]

"Then we shall take Sootopolis."[break][break]

The miasma does not flee from her — it adapts, explores, finds ways to encompass the hand that Gavin holds in his own. So, too, will they find a way to adapt to the shifting darkness that looms on the horizon.

It's a thrill down his spine, a sharpness in his smile.

He leans in, teeth claiming a spot below her jaw.

It should be a warning, but when it comes from his mouth her skin turns to fire. There is an intensity, a need, a hunger that is insatiable, unstoppable, all-consuming. Whatever it is that he wished for, she would grant it. [break][break]

For so long she had been drowning, desperately clawing at the surface.[break][break]

But now her fingernails are at his back, trailing against his skin, leaving behind a trail of pain, of pleasure.[break][break]

His teeth catch her by surprise, but one that she craves. He pushes her back and it bites into her shoulder, but her body twists to accommodate, accepting him as her sole destroyer.[break][break]

She gasps as he descends, a satisfied, comfortable smile lifting the edges of her lips.[break][break]
