an unconscious body is dragged off in the background — a candidate that was in control the majority of the fight, but was caught off guard by a simple right hook. later, they'll need to be taught how to take a hit.

now, taking up one side of the field is a much larger candidate. they have a bodybuilder's build. but it also means they'll likely be slow.

How many had he taken down? Keeping track was just so—mentally exhausting.

Fact of the matter is that he was here, proving his chops.

Maybe raiding the Saffron Dojo back then was a good idea, in hindsight. Flexing his wrists, he made sure that his posture was one ready to strike, before raising his right hand in an ‘attack me’ gesture at his opponent.

He had no idea how many more he would have to bring down, but he was here to prove that he could do it.

[attr="class","beck"]expectedly, the larger candidate charges forward, taking a head-on approach. when he nears yamada, he throws a heavy right hook, one that should easily be dodged, and follows it with a left uppercut to the gut.

his moves are slow but powerful — theo takes a mental note of this, but he doubts he'll need it later.

As predicted—

The other man in front of him may have size advantage, but that’s all he had—size. In speed, and reaction time—

With a quick dance of footwork, he nimbly gets under the open first strike—big mistake, leaving themselves wide open like that, before slamming his elbow into the other man’s solar plexus before shifting around and circling the other.

It wasn’t just circling around, though. There was a purpose to why he’d moved in that direction, out of striking range.

If anyone blinked, they’d miss that he’d aimed the ball of his left foot against the closer of the bigger man’s knees with a powerful kick in an attempt to bring the other down to the mat.

[attr="class","beck"]the kick is unexpected enough that it catches the bigger man off guard. his knee buckles, dropping him to the mat. he's not nearly quick enough to follow yamada but he tries regardless. he shifts on his back, swings his arms in an attempt to sweep yamada's legs.

He’d seen this before—in fact it was this same technique being used against him that had taught him to take down opponents bigger than himself.

Always turn their size on them, he thought with this smirk slowly curling on his face as the expected sweep came in—instead he’d taken a leap and had made sure to angle his landing, elbow first, on the other man’s neck.

He wasn’t done yet, a few moments after grinding his elbow in as hard as he could, he grabbed the expected arms that were about to throw him off and pinned it down in a full nelson.

Never mind if the other man started asking for mercy—he wasn’t here to give that.

[attr="class","beck"]the man struggles in the hold, unable to break free, and though it isn't mercy he asks for, he still taps, conceding the battle. whether yamada decides to release or not is entirely up to him, and theo makes no efforts to step in until he does.

because a battle isn't over simply because one side concedes — they are taught to be merciless. to punish. to kill.

He can tell the other has conceded, given up—however the way he held the other man down in the hold, he didn’t want to concede.

Mercy?

There would be none of that here.

“Just keep quiet,” he hissed, applying more pressure on the hold. He could tell the other was struggling, flailing to get out of the hold.

“Stop struggling.”

He doesn’t know when it happens, but the moment he hears the cracking noise, feels the tension ebbing away in his grip—that’s the only time he releases the hold.

Not taking any chances, he stood up from the hold and flicked his right foot—a small blade quietly emerging from the heel of his shoe.

Without even blinking, he sunk the blade down into the bigger man’s neck. There’s some resistance, but the blade eventually digs in.

…unfortunately, the blade breaks off when he lifts his heel up once he’s sure the other man isn’t moving anymore.

“Tsk,” he hissed again, this time out of annoyance.

blood pools onto the mat, staining it like the others. the body's dragged away to be discarded somewhere, and again, like earlier, another candidate steps up to take their place.

this one is of a similar build to yamada — small, agile, likely deadly. the moment he locks eyes with yamada, he's charging and swinging a katana towards his neck.

Watching quietly as the body was dragged away, he waited before another came up to the plate and—

Oho, so this new challenger wanted to play the same game he did?

Quickly retrieving his own weapon where he’d left it prior to the last few fights, there was barely enough time to raise his own sheathed weapon to block the incoming blade that was coming to get a piece of him.

Unexpected; but for the first few moments he’s forced on the defensive until he has sufficient time to secure his own weapon and unsheathe it from its own scabbard to level the fighting situation.

Tight situation, but it’s one he eventually recovers from—it did send him into an adrenaline rush for a few moments there, got him back on his toes.

Crafty, was all he could think of once his own blade blocked an incoming swing headed right for his neck.

But not today! He continued once he’d made the recovery from his earlier surprised fighting stance, switching from a one-handed hold to his standard two-handed grip and form.

He had to be careful.

With the other blade drawn back, there was a split-second of second-guessing where it would go next—

It was a damned sight to see, really. The flash gave it away—but he’d moved out of range of the wide arc, literally jumping and tucking his feet up as he propelled himself into mid-air.

Now all he had to do was use the momentum and—

Swinging his own blade in an overhead position, Kenjiro unfurled to his full height before bringing the blade down on his opponent’s head.

Whether it would hit either the head or the shoulder on landing, he wouldn’t know, but for a few moments the other was bewildered—where had his opponent gone?

Don’t look up, he thought with this smirk on his face as his own steel flashed and whistled through the air.

Shit.

Metal met metal, and with the force of the landing, he propelled himself downward.

Coming to a landing on the mat, he took another look.

If not from above—then from below!

This time, he would be the one to take the first step forward, holding his own blade in only one hand before crouching down and taking a surprise leap forward.

Instead of swinging the blade, he grabs his own sheath (roughly crammed on the left side of his clothing) before holding the sheath in a backhand grip, swinging it forward first.

There was also a reason why his sheath was heavier than normal—if he hit his opponent hard enough, he’d be able to catch them off-guard and disarm them with his own sword.
