It was hard locating sparring partners who used weapons like he did around here.

Most of the others he’d encountered in the training rooms dealt with hand-to-hand combat, or some variant of street fighting with knives.

So oftentimes he would be practicing alone. Never mind if he didn’t use a practice sword to do so, he preferred to have the real thing on him at all times.

Nine hundred ninety-eight, nine hundred ninety-nine…

Part of his exercise routine involved a thousand swings of the blade. Each and every swing had to be done with precision, otherwise it would be a waste of motion.

Most of the time he’d spent was either down at the fighting ring sharpening his blade on…whatever it could be sharpened on, or otherwise here.

It was looking that he would most probably be the only one who specialized in a bladed weapon, that being a katana. But he didn’t pay that any mind—

At the mention of ‘Celadon’, his eyebrows went up momentarily.

I wonder which gang it is, he pondered to himself. Well, he’d find out eventually, at any rate.

“With nobody else to spar with, difficult. Most times I spend my training where you first saw me.”

Practicing on them, you mean. They wanted to weed out the unworthy, so… he continued the sentence in his head.

He has never felt this insecure before.

Him, without his weapon?

He could feel his palm starting to react to the tension in the air, however he takes a deep breath and hoped that soon enough, he would be reunited with the sword.

Swallowing his trepidation down, he handed his weapon over to the other man.

While he didn’t mind being away from his blade for an extended period of time, leaving it with the presence of another individual other than himself was something he hadn’t dealt with yet, until this moment.

“When—do we depart for Celadon,” he inquired, keeping his voice as steady as possible.

A week? That was seven days too long!

“That—the blade needs daily maintenance,” he attempted to explain. Even if it wasn’t so obvious now, he felt himself maybe falling apart on the inside. The blade had to be kept well-oiled as much as possible.

It was part of his own daily ritual.

“Five?”

Should be easy enough for him… mostly.

Taking a sharp inhale, he attempted to calm himself down. It worked—only slightly.

Eventually, the fights begin. The first two he has no problem with, one ending early with a similar method of him kicking the guy’s shins out from underneath him. The second one folded the moment he’d somehow managed to break their arm.

It was the third one that gave him trouble.

He had never felt this rattled before.
