After five battles he was starting to feel the pressing of time. He'd grown up battling in backyards and on rooftops in Kanto for hours on end during Tag Battles and Royales.

Still, he wasn't fourteen anymore.

His body was reaching its physical peak but somehow his boundless spirit for battles had diminished somewhat in the last decade.

There were more important things in his life now.

After the Battle Tournament was done he and cait alfric would begin making preparations for their next generation.

Chances were this gathering would be the last time he could spend an entire day battling for the sport of it; capturing that old drive he once had.

Plucking a fresh pokéball from his side he resolve to go wild while he still had the mind and body for it.

Zac wasn't a battler. He had always been more interested in watching and documenting Pokemon than optimizing battle strategies and training them to fight better. Still, it was the grim reality of Hoenn that the region needed battlers.

Sure, there would always be a place for professors and scientists, but when it came down to alien invasions or rampaging legendaries, what the League needed was people who knew how to battle.

that's why he had become a Gym Leader. Not due to some innate battling ability or hard-won instincts, but in spite of them. To develop those necessary skills that he so desperately needed.

The Hoenn Star Tournament had been great so far! Incredibly fun, exciting, and he had lost almost every battle! What was his score, 3:20 or something equally one-sided? Still, every battle was another step closer to being useful when it came to crunch.

Zac approached a lone battler waiting in one of the arenas. As had been the case a dozen times today, it was a familiar face. "Hey Sénon! How's it going mate?" Zac asked, offering a massive hand to shake with the fellow redhead.

The hand shake was taken in earnest and shook firm. He liked Zac; easy to admire, there was a nobility to the guy. He did look a little different though.

"Ramsay, you look good." Casually he lifted a ball from his belt, having already chosen his pokémon. "You've lost weight." The wonders of his avatar status mixed in with some good olds fashioned dedication.

Who needed meats when you could spawn the biggest freshest vegetation at your feet. Did it work like that? Maybe he needed the seeds of a vegetable or fruit first.

Sénon called a Haunter to the field waiting for Ramsay to name his own champion. The Haunter huffed in haunted laughs, her tongue hanging out of her mouth. She loved a good scuffle almost as much as a good prank.

"Thanks mate! It's all the clean living I've been doing," Zac said, taking a can from his Rotom fridge and cracking it open. It was a Passho Plus+, and the air was filled with the sparkling scent of citrus, ozone, and cosmic radiation. He took a big sip and offered one of the drinks to Senon.

"Oh, and the sleeping. Been getting a good 10 hours in most days. What about yourself? Staying healthy?" There was a note of worry in Zac's voice. "I noticed you stepped down as Head Ranger." He had been delighted when Senon got the promotion and recognition he deserved. But then to slip away shortly after? He'd just assumed that life had gotten in the way. A few rumors had filtered through the ranger ranks, but it was best to get the news right from the source.

Zac sent out his Tentacruel. The sea creature looked ungainly on land, as opposed to the usual majestic form it cut in the sea. A swarm of massive, writhing tentacles propped up its bulky blue frame, and the gleaming red orbs on its head reflected chunks of ruby sunlight. Its beady eyes, shadowed by its cliff-like forehead, watched Haunter. Waiting.

It was true that he seemed to disappear from the rangers with no word. It was additive to his pride to know they carried on and protected the lands even when one of the leaders was vacant.

"I had a bit of an injury, from that excursion business in Meteor Falls." It was painful but nothing gnarly, he'd just sprained his ankle and broken a bone in his foot. "Shortly after I was needed in Kanto in my capacity as Ambassador."

He'd only gotten back today, and today was only about one thing. "Let get a drink when the battles are done." With a downward swipe of his arm to his side, he gestured Haunter to attack.

"CONFUSE RAY!"

"Good to hear it wasn't too serious," Zac said, relief spreading through him like sunshine. "I was worried about you mate. Let me know if you get injured again, I've got a bit of a healing touch."

The barely corporeal opponent shot a pinpoint CONFUSE RAY at Tentacruel. The strange frequency sunk into the body of the Pokemon, rattling his brain and throwing off his senses. Tentacruel flailed around, slamming into the sand with its dozen tentacles and blasting jets of BUBBLEBEAM around with less-than-perfect aim.

"I'd love to have a drink after this," Zac said, taking a drink from his can. "It's been a long day, hasn't it?"

He didn't know the Tapu that wrapped Zac in its blessings had the power to heal too. "Thanks Ramsay, I'll be taking you up on that."

It made him second guess what he'd spent his time doing the day Zac Ramsay became an avatar.

To be able to induce healing unto others and to sow the life of flora at will. With those gifts he and Cait would have made a power couple in terms of their potential as humanitarians.

Where the hell was the god of stampeding Tauros to throw a blessing or two his way?

With a playful sternness to his voice he called short the reminder of how damned hot it was out here. "Now focus up Ranger. . ." Zac had built up such a reputation as a gym leader Sénon sometimes forgot he was a ranger too. That happened despite the fact that Ramsay's Biome Badges were all about nature and the habitats pokémon made home.

He couldn't think of a badge nor gym theme more fitting for a ranger.

"-the battles on." Of course he wasn't so battle crazy that he couldn't at least confirm the social invite. "Butyeahwe'll -we'llthrowafewbacktonight."

Bubblebeam did its job as effectively as it did whenever Sénon used it himself. It was actually one of his favorite water-type attacks growing up.

Haunter took damage but didn't falter sending a HEX at the compromised jellyfish.

Zac grinned at the fellow ranger's enthusiasm. While he wasn't a big drinker, or really a drinker at all, Zac loved a good party. Spending time with a bunch of his best friends, with everyone having a great time? Zac couldn't imagine anything better than seeing so many smiling faces.

Meanwhile, Tentacruel was not smiling. Even if the huge sea creature was capable of smiling under that hooked beak, instead its mouth would be twisted into a grimace of nausea and pain. Haunter's HEX struck the CONFUSED Tentacruel, and he reared as the ghostly attack tore at his exposed tentacles.

He staggered back, pulling in his wounded appendages. The red orbs on his head flashed in sudden warning, and poisonous waste surged as a SLUDGE WAVE crashed across the sand towards Haunter.

The SLUDGE WAVE slapped Haunter with a thick 'schlock'. Only wiping away enough for her eyes to see she let out a haunting cackle.

She was so lax in her defense he became poisoned!

She loved a good splatter on the unsuspecting and a funny thing happening to her didn't make it any less funny.

Her laughter grew and echoed out as her eyes began to glow with violet tones.

Louder and louder it became until it likely felt like it was coming from inside the tentacruel's own mind.

One of the many ways Haunter applied her trickery to put another pokemon to sleep.

In the depths of Tentacruel's mind laughter crashed like jangling coral. He staggered, closing his eyes as another wave of nausea struck. It was like reverse sea-sickness. Too long out of the water and he could hardly think straight.

Tentacruel crashed to the sand, retreating into his mind, lured in by the laughter that lapped at his mind like low tide. He clenched his eyes shut, following the sound into the darkness.

Once again Haunter would HEX her opponent sending supernatural energies to flash, flux and jinx the senses of the target dealing damage to the nervous system.

Nothing a pokémon center couldn't ail but the damage it did on pokémon with their resilience already compromised; sleeping, frozen, poisoned, burned, confused or paralyzed, was far more damaging.

Tentacruel shuddered as the ghostly energies pushed against his psyche, shoving him further into nightmare. It was too much. Battered, confused, and driven inward, the creature's sanctuary had now been invaded, and he feel into a deep, dreamless unconsciousness.

Zac let out a low whistle. "That was quick. You sure know how to press an advantage, mate!" He returned Tentacruel, tucking the ball safely in his pocket. "I bet this tournament has been a breeze for you so far."

He was ready to take the battle further given he had the upper hand but it seemed tentacruel wasn't up for it.

Haunter's laughs faded into the ether as she was returned to her pokéball.

It was true he'd taken the victory but he was also quite aware Zac's skills hadn't been put on display here.

Not that Sénon gave him much room with his aggressive tactics. Still, he made a mental note to challenge Zac in a more extended battle context in the future.

"I have been doing pretty well so far but I still feel so out of practice." He approached the other redhead a bit unsatisfied with the results.

"What about you? Victory is nice, but learning new tricks, that's the real win isn't it?"

"Ain't that the truth," Zac said. "Bit too much to hope that you learned any tricks from that battle, isn't it." He wished he'd been able to give Senon a bit more of a fight, but his heavy hitters were more than tuckered out after so many battles.

Tentacruel had tried its damndest, but as far as Zac was aware it was the monster's first real battle. Against a more seasoned opponent, it hadn't been much of a contest. "We'll have to do this another time. Something a bit more extensive, ay?" Zac suggested. "Once things have calmed down a bit I'll find somewhere out in the wilds where we can throw down properly. How does that sound?"
