The early morning. For once he woke up quickly. With purpose. Giona had his personal flight to Slateport Beach with the help of his Drifblim, but he hadn't any plans to use it today. Before him was someone already setting up camp near a stage. He hadn't been on a stage in a while due to his astonishingly bad record, but he got on quick, while nobody was looking.

"Hey, man. Are you down?"

This was going to be interesting. They had friends in common, and were strangers to eachother. Giona raised a brow. The row of pokeballs clipped to the waistband of his track pants rustled. One in particular threatened to pull his pants down. He ended up obliging it, pulling out a Sableye with a red beam.

Giona looked to Vic with a slight grin, waiting for him to follow up.

"...If not, I can do something else."

He didn’t want to be that person anymore, and even if he had, his pokémon at Hoenn weren’t the well-trained and battle-ready teams he had worked so hard with back at both Unova and Galar.

Yet, this tournament seemed to have awakened something in him, and so it was that when the stranger asked him if he’d like to battle, he smiled as Vic so often did. ”Sure, man, but I hope you don’t expect anything fancy.” He laughed, walking over to position as he had been so used to doing in the past. A pokéball was unclipped from his own belt, summoning an adorable cloud-winged Altaria that flew a few metres off the ground.

The early morning. Giona by comparison was an awkward middle child. Not like his parents’ oldest who worked at the Mauville power plant, and had the most opportunities growing up. Not like their youngest, who was parented the best. He was merely expected to make a living, which he did. Giona smirked to Vic.

"You shouldn’t expect anything fancy either. Check my win/loss record after this."

This was going to be interesting. They had friends in common, and were strangers to eachother. Sableye opened up with Power Gem. A slurry of rock and mineral runoff water sent at Altaria in the same manner as a water gun. Every part of the beam caught the sun and had a slight rainbow texture over them.

Giona looked to Vic with a slight grin, waiting for him to follow up.

"I’ll be keeping an eye out, incase you happen to meet the learning objectives for my gym."

”Oh, you’re a gym leader? That’s pretty cool! I’m Vic, nice to meet ya.” It was with a bright smile that he introduced himself, seemingly unbothered by this new information. It didn’t change much in Vic’s opinion, honestly, a battle was a battle, and they weren’t at a gym. Though, it was always cool to meet people like that.

Then again, Vic thought it was cool to meet just about anyone.

”Dark or ghost, then? Or is it some other kind of theme?”

He always got curious about those things, and while he happily chatted along, his Altaria swooped down vertically to try to avoid the beam of light created by Power Gem. His back and tail feathers were still inevitably hit, but he braved through the pain, and when he was almost at the ground, he swiftly turned to go forwards towards the Sableye, his beak opening with a DRAGON BREATH right before aiming to fly up again – where he’d out of reach from physical attacks, for the most part.

The early morning. Vic wasn’t fazed by this new information. Seemed like a nice guy, too. Probably not the type to try to 100% everything. Some type of person more scary to him than a morning person.

"Ghost types. They owe the most to human intervention. I don’t think a Polteageist or Banette would’ve taken the form it would’ve without like... human concepts. The objective then... is to show your team what you do for them.."

This was going to be interesting. Dragon Breath made its mark. A third of the time, Sableye wouldn’t be able to attack at all, in addition to being slower now.

Giona pinched his earrings. In a flash of light, Sableye’s middle gem expanded and formed a tower-shield. It’d have to, using defense to compete when speed was no longer an option.

There were things Vic really cared about, and things he just thought would be a good time. Battling was the former, and despite how he may have looked and acted, it took everything in him not to intervene and just let the Altaria do whatever he wanted. He didn’t want to care so much, but it was hard not to when it was one of the only things he had cared about since he was a child…

Focusing on the conversation made it easier, and despite all the tumultuous thoughts taking over his mind, he was also having a great time. ”What you do for them, huh? That’s cute, I like it! My only ghost type is my Dragapult, and I’m not sure what human intervention has to do with them… I hear there’s this theory that they’re the ghosts of prehistoric pokémon that went extinct though. Kinda sad, right?”

Vic had a tendency to talk too much and too fast, finding himself ranting when the Sableye changed forms. ”Oh! I haven’t seen a mega evolution in a while, niiiiice! That's a cool one for sure.”

The Altaria, on the other hand, didn’t find it so nice, soon turning in the air to face his opponent and summoning a MOONBLAST.
