Rhian's ship is scheduled to dock in an hour still, so Leonardo takes this opportunity to check out the Night Market. It's not night yet, so naturally there's not much of the characteristic market feel to it yet. But enough stalls fill the area to keep the physicist entertained until the S.S. Tidal's eventual arrival.

it's not hard to spot him in the small crowd forming in slateport's market. he may not have large distinctive features like her own golden locks, but she'd be able to recognize his hard jaw and the bags under his eyes anywhere. also, he's kind of like a giant.

rhian prepares her attack. positioning is key. finally, she leaps at him with a sing-song "surprise!" she's prepared for the outcome, too. even if she gets reprimanded later, she at least knows leo loves his hugs from behind. and if her plans fail, she can just run away really quickly. being shorter gives her the advantage of speed.

he says, frowning. Far from worrying about the possibility of her stalking him, he worries that she came all the way here alone. Sure, the Night Market may not be that far away from the harbor, but one really couldn't be careful enough in this city, given recent events.

With a sigh, he concedes, returning the hug.

"You probably would have found a way to hack me either way."

As soon as he finishes his sentence, he feels a gust of wind against his face. Next thing he knows the Poké Puffs he was holding poofed. Looking up he notices that the culprit is no other than a scizor and that it is already making its way towards the forest, where they surely wouldn't be able to find it.

"Hey, come back!"

he shouts in anger.

rhian does her best

to contain the little giggles threatening to bubble out of her mouth. she's still holding onto him, her face making direct contact with his back, helping her muffle out most of the sound coming from her. his comment about her finding a way to hack him is very true, but she's not about to admit that.

and then, as suddenly as her surprise attack came, another one does too. if she hadn't noticed the poké puffs in leo's hands before, the wild scizor made sure she would see them before it took off in the direction of the forest— and her boyfriend with it.

"leo!" she calls after him. it's futile: he's hurrying after the scizor, dodging waves of shoppers on his way. soon, his mop of brunette hair disappears from sight. just great.

[break][break]

luckily, as long as leo kept his pokénav on his person, rhian would be able to locate him just as easily as she had already done. with this thought in mind, she opens the device and taps on the brunette's picture. then she waits.

what's going on? she frowns, confused at how long the gps is taking to load, and even more confused when the screen suddenly goes blank. is this broken?

[break][break]

relief washes over her face when the pokénav beeps back on. it is short-lived relief, though, as the screen blinks again and an unfamiliar face greets her, replacing her usual background.

Scizors are known for their speed, and this one was clearly not below average. As a physicist, Leonardo's daily routine doesn't involve a lot of physical exertion. At most he'd go to the gym every few days. But he sure isn't about to let this Poké Puff thief get away. If he did, he'd have to pay the merchant AND disappoint Rhian in one go.

Besides, he'd be failing as a member of the League. Although not in the Law Enforcement division, Leonardo is still employed by the League and neither party's reputation is independent of the other. He'd help catch it. Criminals are criminals, regardless of species.

That said, things are a little complicated. Given the scizor's speed, catching up is nigh impossible. Their best shot is, no pun intended, to shoot at it from afar. Leonardo fully trusts his metagross to hit the mark. The main problem is the many civilians prowling these streets, and the high chances of lost bullets injuring one of them in such an open space.

"Rhian, I need your klefki to use fairy lock,"

he says, not realizing that neither she or her pokémon are present. They never caught up and he must've lost them along the way. Problematic, but still nothing he couldn't work around. She would find her way to him eventually with her pokénav, so he focuses his efforts on the scizor.

If he can't catch up to its speed, Leonardo would just have to make it slow down. His metagross can do the job fine, if only the scizor looks back at them for a moment. Leonardo scans the perimeter for something that could serve as a distraction. Something loud, something that would make it turn its head... His eyes lock on a little girl and her much bigger purple pokémon. An exploud is exactly what he needs.

"Keep going, I'll provide the distraction,"

he instructs the metagross as he takes off towards the exploud. Before splitting up, he adds,

"Make sure you're at the right angle. Once it's slowed down, where you shoot from won't matter much."

And so begins their plan. He's racing against the clock, and he knows he would have preferred literally any other trainer to ask for help, but beggars can't be choosers. The little girl looks scared, but luckily her father is nearby and they finally agree to helping him. When the exploud releases the alarm-like sound, his metagross is ready to gift him a Scary Face.

Leonardo quickly thanks the family before rushing to the scene. The forest is still a long way off, but they couldn't get cocky and risk their success.

rhian has some problems

of her own. after all that talk about hacking leo, she ended up being the one getting hacked by a pokémon. oh, the irony. at least it isn't another person, she supposes. that would have been way more humiliating, in hindsight. not that she enjoys the experience of being on the receiving end of such tricks as a whole.

she stares down at her screen. based on the shape and color of the eyes staring back, she thinks she knows what kind of pokémon is responsible for this attack: a rotom. they're known to be big trolls, and this one doesn't seem to be the exception.

"if i ask nicely, would you leave my pokénav and show me your true form?" she asks. the rotom shakes its head. yes, shakes its head no. this is all so surreal. she tilts her head, thinking. if the rotom refused to stop possessing her pokénav, rhian couldn't do much about it. by the time she got to the closest power plant to force it out, leo might be in trouble, not to mention the force of thousands of volts would be painful even for the electric type. she really would rather not have to resort to that.

she takes out a small battery from her bag. fresh out of the factory, a graphene battery could just be the most delicious snack an electric type could hope for. "do you like graphene batteries? this one could be all yours." she watches the rotom hesitate, and for a moment she thinks bribery really is going to work.

"vanadium oxide for extra durability and a smooth ease-in to that voltage, coupled with graphene for extra conductivity. sounds pretty good, doesn't it?" it does, but the rotom's willpower surpasses its appeal. back to the sketching board for her.

[break][break]

another idea comes to mind. even if it did refuse her request, the rotom at least answered in its own way. it isn't completely uncooperative; it simply did not want to do the specific thing she asked for. in that case, it was worth formulating a different request. "if i let you stay in there, would you help me look for my boyfriend? it's kind of important."

[break][break]

at this, the rotom winks and opens up the more familiar interface of her maps feature. a map of the city serves as background for two blinking dots: one representing her and the rotom, and the other... "they went that way."

[break][break]

pokénav in hand, she follows the blue blinking dot. on the way, rhian finds more than one annoyed civilian, which both confirms leo's passage through there and slows her down. annoyed people can be very petty and unhelpful if they wish to be.

when she finally finds him, leo is battling the scizor at the very edge of the forest. smart location. "leo! there you are," she says, huffing. "is there anything i can help with?"

Upon arrival, Leonardo nods at Rhian.

"Can you lock it in place for good measure? We've already slowed it down and exhausted it, but we don't know if it has any tricks up its sleeve."

True enough, the scizor looks tired. But no matter how many hits it takes, it keeps standing up. It's a formidable trait that Leonardo can appreciate, but it's also a very dangerous one that can get it killed. Even after his metagross' bullet punch and meteor mash combination, the scizor had enough energy and fight left in it to strike back with a bullet punch of its own.

With Rhian's help, though, the battle was pretty much over. The scizor wouldn't be able to stand much longer, and fairy lock would ensure that it couldn't run away either.

"It's over,"

he says, and after a final hammer arm attack from his metagross, the scizor comes to accept it too. It's still got fight in it, Leonardo can tell, but it's also aware of its body's limitations. As the scizor crumbles to the floor, he tosses a pokéball.

leo's request doesn't

surprise her. it's the most sensible one, in fact, even if it's not one she's too happy to fulfill. with a nod of her own, she releases her klefki from his pokéball and instructs for him to fairy lock the perimeter. neither of the pokémon in the field would be able to run away now.

she watches the exchange with alert but discomfort. though she realizes sometimes they're needed, rhian had never liked battles. just looking at the two steel types battling it out in front of her makes her stomach twist. she diverts her eyes when the scizor is about to fall to his knees, and only the characteristic sound of a pokémon struggling against its pokéball informs her of leo's decision to capture it.

oh, thank arceus, she thinks, finally allowing herself to look up again to see the capture attempt's outcome. this means we can take it to the pokémon center asap.

using the tips of her fingers, she gently caresses the face of her klefki. "thank you, grandt. you can rest now." rhian gestures to the pokéball still in her hand, and the klefki returns to its electronic abode.

just as she's about to turn on her heels and head towards the pokémon center (all of them could use a bit of respite), she remembers the little hacker that had infiltrated her pokénav. rather, it forces her to remember it by appearing right in front of her. she's taken aback by its floating form, its plasma tendrils rising up and down as it hovers before her eyes.

"you got out," she gasps in surprise. she can't tell if this is meant to be its last prank on her before it moves on to its next victim, or simply its own way of bidding farewell. "i'm guessing you'll be on your way now?" the thought makes her feel a little melancholy. they may not have spent all that long together, but she would miss it, prankster personality and all.

the rotom tilts its head to the side. well, it tilts its entire body, really. hard to tilt only your head when your head makes up the entirety of your body, she supposes. and see, see how her mind keeps jumping from one thought to another just to avoid the truth that she would no doubt hear?

but it doesn't make any move to leave. normally, rhian would take that to mean the rotom doesn't want to go, not yet at least. the problem is it proceeds to circle around her, stop, possess her pokénav again, beep a few times, then present itself in front of her again.

"um. does that mean you want to come with us?"

it's really quite harder to understand what the rotom is trying to tell her when it's jumping all over the place. hesitating, she holds an empty pokéball to it and hopes for the best.

he asks as he closes off the distance between him and Rhian.

"Are you going to tell me what that all was about?"

After watching the rotom's very fancy display, all Leonardo is able to gather is that Rhian got a new friend. Where she found it or how events led to its eventual addition to the team, he is very curious about.

Before they can really get a chance to talk, something or rather some things begin to buzz somewhere not far beyond the very edge of the forest. His eyes fly to the source of this buzzing sound. The scizor was already inside his pokéball, could it be it had friends awaiting it back here?

He turns to Rhian with an expression telling her this noise would be worth investigating.

literally only a couple steps

into the forest, an unlikely pair flies in circles in a small clearing. almost like a mating dance, they hover around the other. sometimes the vibrava takes the lead. at other times, it's the ninjask. except, at a closer look, it looks more a conversation than a dance. the bugs' wings buzz more loudly now that they're up close, loud enough that her head starts to hurt.

she realizes, then, they're hungry. rhian looks at them. she looks back at the food leo worked so hard to recover. she presents it to the couple.

"i'm sorry," she says, taking a step back to allow the two bugs room to inspect the goodies. "i don't know if mr. scizor was your friend, but he's really hurt right now, so we're taking him to a nurse to look at him. i just wanted you guys to know."

Leonardo would have wanted to argue against giving the bugs ALL of their Poké Puffs, if only he had been given the choice. They could have kept at least two. And did they really have to mention the scizor to them? But as it tends to happen when a man is no longer single, his dear girlfriend decided to take things into her own hands and give the wild pokémon their entire loot.

And of course, he would be the one repaying the shopkeeper for all of the treats given away. [break][break]

"You might have as well told them I wasn't intending on returning it to them, you know?"

Leonardo sighs in defeat, limiting himself to following after Rhian. At least he has a strong new pokémon. He's excited to see what it can do after some training. He has high hopes for the scizor. But first, they would pay a visit to the nurses at the local Pokécenter. [break][break]

Each of them carrying a new pokémon of their own, they head towards their next stop.
