[attr="class","tctext"]Elisabeth sat at the docks, folded her hands in her lap, and waited patiently. The sea stretched out before her like black glass, shimmering in the moonlight. The fins of Finneon and Goldeen briefly rippled through the surface, their silhouettes barely visible undersea. Watching them made for a pleasant diversion to pass the time. She had chosen to arrive early; her partner was due to appear at any moment.[break][break]
Transporting cargo for Rocket was, for better or worse, becoming as routine to the Kalosian noblewoman as delivering flowers to different vendors. The basic essentials were more or less the same. Be polite; know when to be discrete. Be efficient; don't waste time. Be professional; no one wants repeat work from someone sloppy.[break][break]
The difference of course was that she was smuggling Pokemon, and the stakes for such illegal activity were anything but low.[break][break]
A quick learner by all accounts, Elisabeth had gotten better at wielding her environment to her benefit, wearing a hood that partially covered her features and cloaked the rest of her body in dark, heavy fabric. No sense in sticking out like a sore thumb for such a simple brief, even at such a late hour. Better to conceal herself in the shadows. [break][break]
She had been kept in the dark regarding the particulars of the mission, save for the need to transport cargo safely from one location to the other, but that suited Elisabeth just fine. Shadowing someone who knew more than her was to be expected as a new recruit. Once her superior arrived, the real work would begin, distasteful though it may be.[break][break]
A stray thought entered her mind unbidden, causing her to smirk despite herself; fitting that a gardener didn't mind getting her hands dirty.

There were certain benefits to her position as an assistant at Team Rocket’s laboratories, for while still a grunt and at the very bottom of the criminal organisation’s strict hierarchy, it meant she didn’t often have to go out and do the same kind of jobs that were assigned to most grunts (unless short-staffed, that is). Her talents laid elsewhere and Team Rocket knew that. Of course, it also helped that she had been part of the organisation for years now.

This night was a bit different, for this night’s pokémon were going to the lab itself, and such being the case, Ceri had been asked to board the boat along with someone else Rocket had sent and make sure their cargo made it to the submarine safely.

A typical smuggling run, although perhaps one with not very typical smugglers…

Leggings, sneakers, a hoodie... The sort of outfit any young woman her age would wear. Paired with headphones that made it seem like she had just gone for a midnight run along the harbour. She stood at no more than 5’3”, and when standing before the woman waiting for her, she smiled sweetly.

Despite the difference in age and height between them -- Elizabeth herself stood at a cool 5'9" -- she responded to the Rocket in a deferent tone. Appearances, the woman well knew, could be deceiving. [break][break]
A faint curiosity prickled at the back of her mind on what unique talents her partner brought to the table, but Elisabeth kept such nosy thoughts to herself. If it was necessary for her to know, Ceri would inform her; if not, then Elisabeth would content herself with wondering.[break][break]
To business, then. "I understand we are transporting cargo? Let me know what you need from me, and I'll be glad to assist."

Being no more than a lab assistant, Ceri wasn’t used to people in Team Rocket treating her as someone who should be respected, so Elisabeth’s deference truly came as a surprise. Yet, the Galarian’s smile remained all the same, having to stop herself from telling the older woman to relax.

Smuggling wasn’t supposed to be relaxing, was it?

The boat part sure didn’t make it relaxing for Ceri…

”That’d be me. Come on, let’s get on the boat.”

Thoughts of motion-sickness were pushed aside as she stepped on the vessel, for while she may have generally disliked travelling by water, it was something she had needed to get used to when moving to a place like Hoenn and then to Team Rocket’s submarine. These sorts of things were often done by boat for convenience, especially ever since they had taken Sootopolis.

Their cargo had already been loaded, all they needed to do was make sure it got to the submarine safely.

”Should be like any job. We’re transporting a handful of Vileplume, though, so you might wanna be mindful of their pollen.”

Pollen that was highly allergic to humans and pokémon alike. Likely to cause paralysis and worse.

The sort of thing Ceri loved studying.

[attr="class","tctext"] ...Was Ceri uncomfortable? The Rocket was smiling, but there was a faint sense of bafflement in the expression as she faced Elisabeth. The blonde had presumed being a new recruit meant lying low and putting her own ego to the side, and for the most part, Elisabeth's previous few missions for Rocket had rewarded that behavior. Of course, it would be silly to assume all Rockets were a monolith. Be adaptable, Elisa.[break][break]
Elisabeth exhaled and smiled, visibly relaxing her demeanor.[break][break]
"A straightforward enough transport mission! Nothing much to discuss, then." She gestured for Ceri to enter the boat first, saying warmly, "After you."[break][break]
While Elisabeth had yet to make use of Rocket's submarine or any other water-borne vehicles, she recognized the boat being used for cargo as one typical of those used for large fisheries. A basic and somewhat outdated model, it would neither draw attention nor suspicion; the water was teeming with similar vessels.[break][break]
It had been a long time since Elisabeth had boarded a boat, but she had always enjoyed them--the feeling of the wind in her hair, the rocking of the ship against the choppy waves, the speed at which they traveled. Her companion seemed less enthused at a glance, so Elisabeth refrained from commenting on her enjoyment of the experience.[break][break]
At Ceri's mention of the Vileplume below, however, Elisabeth's eyebrows raised approvingly.[break][break]
"I have extensive experience with Vileplume, as it happens; I primarily work in poisons for Rocket. The pollen shouldn't be an issue." She had utilised it in a number of powders, poisons, and potions kept hidden in the basement of her flower shop, where Rockets with the right clearance received their 'arrangement' for a poor, unlucky recipient.[break][break]
"Although," she continued, eyeing her companion thoughtfully, "I happen to have some herbs in my satchel that can assist with preventing sea-sickness." A tad hastily, she added, "Not to presume, of course. It is a common ailment, is all."[break][break]
Already she regretted bringing up the observation; a boat was a terrible place to make things awkward, and they still had such a very, very long way to go.

Ceri beamed at Elisabeth then, for even in Team Rocket, it was a rarity to find someone who shared a common interest in toxins. Most people avoided learning about things like those, drawn away from them by the thought of potential dangers. A silly notion to her, since toxins were everywhere and definitely not just being produced by pokémon.

”No wonder they sent you out of all people! A lot of grunts have issues with transporting grass type pokémon because they don’t account for things like pollen and spores, so they get a little too rough with the boxes. I worried when they asked me to come, thought I may have to hit someone for doing something dumb.”

She chuckled then, winking at Elisabeth. Could a girl as sweet and cheerful as Ceri actually hit someone? Maybe. With the right reasons, certainly.

There was an offer of herbs to help with her sea-sickness then, one appropriately made just as the boat began moving…

”Guess it was a little too obvious, hm?” Ceri gave her a smile. ”Sure, what’ya got? Ginger or peppermint or something?...Oh. I grew up in a flower shop, my mum was basically a botanist, so I’m used to taking this or that herb to help with whatever problem.”

The explanation may not have been needed, but it came nevertheless, because in Ceri’s experience, a lot of people had a tendency to be skeptical about how helpful herbs could be. She knew the answer well.

[attr="class","tctext"] At the common ground established between them, Elisabeth smiled, leaning against the side of the boat as it lurched forward. The sea breeze tousled her loose blonde hair, causing it to spin behind her in a spiral of windswept gold. [break][break]
"Do you have to hit recruits often?" she asked, her voice bright with good humour. She didn't doubt that Ceri could have a mean left hook if she wanted. "I've noticed many people don't understand the tender delicacy that comes with caring for Grass Pokemon. They are not some brutish Rock-type you can hurl about unthinkingly." [break][break]
So saying, the blonde rummaged in her bag, bringing forth a small satchet of peppermint that she handed to Ceri. "You have a good sense of these things," she said approvingly. "I brought mint, yes. I hope it will do?"[break][break]
It was a relief to not have to explain her offer to the woman, or to navigate the minefield of someone else's pride. People could be funny about such advice from strangers.[break][break]
"It's funny, us meeting here," Elisabeth continued, thinking aloud. "Most of my days are spent working at a flower shop, and one of my oldest and dearest relationships is with my Vileplume. Serendipitous, no?"[break][break]
She didn't doubt that such similarities were rarities in Team Rocket. Most of the recruits she had met appeared, to put it kindly, down on their luck. Rocket merely paid better than the League ever could.[break][break]
It was a singular pleasure to speak with someone who found their work rewarding, not just necessary.[break][break]
The transport had been going so smoothly until now that it was a shock when the boat shuddered to a stop. "We shouldn't be arriving by now, should we?" Elisabeth asked, arising to her feet. There was no land to see for ages, at least.[break][break]
The premature interruption explained itself swiftly: the enormous tentacles of a Tentacruel reached over the side of the boat, followed by a pair of glaring red eyes. Elisabeth didn't know the Pokemon could grow this large so deep into the ocean, and yet here one was, ready to plummet the ship--and her and Ceri with it--at a moment's notice.[break][break]
"Don't make any sudden movements," Elisabeth whispered, eyes locked with the gigantic Tentacruel. One wrong step and the entire ship of Vileplume could disastrously topple, sending pollen and spores in all directions.[break][break]

The response came almost instantaneously, Ceri beaming at Elisabeth with the brightest and sweetest grin she could give. That was just the way she was: on the surface, sweet and lovely, but the Kalosian woman was right, and she would have had no hesitation in punching someone if she felt obligated to do as much.

”Right, though? I have a friend who loves Steel type pokémon and like I could never. Don’t get me wrong, I love engineering and all, but Grass and Poison types are just my jam, you know?”

Did she know? Probably not, but Ceri had a way of acting as if just about anyone she met was a friend she made long ago.

It was perhaps why she so readily took the offered satchel of peppermint, trusting the woman’s judgement with a smile upon her lips.

”Thanks! Mint’s great! I actually plan on studying the spores produced by these Vileplume for…”
[break][break]
As she talked, the boat came to a sudden stop, and Ceri found herself looking over starboard when the tentacles began to rise from the depths below…

”Oh…”

Perhaps she should have been worried, scared even, but what was to be found in both her expression and tone was more akin to fascination.

“Cool. I got this… Here.” With whispered words, Ceri dug into her hoodie’s pocket and offered Elisabeth a handkerchief, then releasing an Ivysaur onto the deck. A single gesture and SLEEP POWDER began to be expelled from its bloom, the Galarian being well aware that the dust would be absorbed into the Tentacruel’s system the moment it made contact…

[attr="class","tctext"] Elisabeth's eyelids fluttered every so slightly from the haze of SLEEP POWDER, though the Ivysaur's careful aim ensured that the brunt of it landed upon the Tentacruel. The enormous sea Pokemon's red eyes dimmed, tentacles receding into the water with a splash as the ship began to rock with shuddering inertia.[break][break]

Even this most gentle action, alas, had an unpleasant consequence with the fussy Vileplume below. Although the worst of the Vileplumes' spores remained below deck, enough golden haze ascended through the floorboards of the ship to spur Elisabeth into action.[break][break]

This time, the Kalosian noblewoman was the one who summoned a Pokemon, a sparkling green light heralding the arrival of her Roselia, Primrose, from her Pokeball. Yawning slightly as the last of the soporific powder tickled her nose, the flowery Pokemon turned to Elisabeth obediently, awaiting orders. [break][break]

"AROMATHERAPY, Prim," Elisabeth commanded, and a soothing fragrance filled the air in answer, allowing the paralyzing spores and sleeping powder alike to harmlessly sparkle out of existence.[break][break]

Elisabeth exhaled, her shoulders finally releasing the tension of the encounter. Would she ever get used to this? Surely she would have to, if Elisabeth was to make it in this new life she had chosen for herself. "You handled that Tentacruel wonderfully," she said to Ceri, her appreciation sincere. "Quick-thinking, that."[break][break]

A quick study of the below deck ensured that the merchandise had managed to stay relatively unharmed, save for a few unhappily paralyzed Vileplume. Another quick round of Aromatherapy, however, cleaned up that little problem nicely.[break][break]

"You were saying something, about your studies," Elisabeth said, turning to Ceri with a question in her eyes. "I believe you were rudely cut off by that Tentacruel before you could finish?"
