The glass-fronted greenhouse held the orange glow of the firelight, embers shining through the undersides of the leaves as the blaze burned quietly through the night. Indy knows the feeling. The illusion of a concrete person, as if you really could reach out your hand and press skin to skin. Maybe feel pulse. But that's where he'd been wrong. He'd built this imaginary perfect thing in his mind, and just when she'd been fully realized, she was--Gone. They were expecting her--it was her son's birthday--but... she never came. The next time Indy saw his mother was with a cutting of a Calla lily in a heavy wooden box. He threw his handful of dirt, bid his goodbyes, and he watched his father, languish in his grief like a withering flower.

[break][break]And time starts to bleed and blur after a while. Now, his father was staring at Indy - nearly full grown, sharp jacket and the gym's oblivion badge even as his friends fumbled through their lives in t-shirts and ripped jeans, arms folded over his chest in that apathetic, growly way even now - his dad had the distinct feeling he should have put a stop to this back when the kid was ten and passing his pokemon orders from the sidelines.

[break][break]One extended trip at a time, one mysterious meeting after another, he watched his father vanish overseas and relinquish the gym - one that Indy would never be able to make his own -- become hollow. One night he slipped in late to his father's study and failed to recognize it. Unfamiliar paperwork thrown across the desk, blueprints and maps of regions which he'd most likely never visit half-tacked to the walls. And for an instant Indy feels as if he is standing outside of all of it, watching another version of himself in a strange and unlikely universe as his eyes settled overhead on the trademark 'R' stained a bold, incriminating red.
