Xiura sat cross-legged on a spread-out picnic blanket on the pier, a compact box of fishing gear and tackle on one side, and a tray of fruit-and-cream sandwiches and boxes of juice on the other. Her shining purple rod was perfectly still and ramrod-straight as her neglected hook and lure floated atop the rippling surface of the water. The sea was wide and open, a cool, sea salt-fragrant breeze whispering past. Wingulls and Pelippers honked high overhead, searching for their next meal.

She turned to the girl beside her, Naomi Sato , and said, "Hmm, how long do you think this usually takes?"

Just then, she felt a violent tug on her pole!

Nomi giggled at the look of utter shock on Xiura's face when, just as her friend was wondering about how long fishing might take, something actually - quite comically - tugged on the blue-haired young woman's fishing rod. Valerian looked up from where he was napping in a patch of warm sand next to the pier, roused by the sounds of splashing as Xiura reeled in a disgruntled-looking Sharpedo. Nomi herself hadn't caught anything yet, but she was still immensely glad that her friend had invited her out to try fishing together: it was something the pink-haired brewer had never tried before, and she was all about trying new things lately, like that crazy virtual reality game she'd played with jack wainwright. Fishing had proven to be decidedly less exciting than that game, however - until this very moment, anyway.[break][break]
Keeping one hand casually grasping her own pink fishing pole, Nomi leaned over to grab a sandwich from the tray Xiura had thoughtfully provided (one could always rely on Xiura for delicious treats!), but just as she went to take a bite, her own pole started jerking violently. "Oh!" she remarked - now her turn to look surprised - and dropped the sandwich into her lap so she could have both hands available to reel in whatever she'd caught. "I guess I've got one too!"[break][break]

Bishop had heard the Splashfest fishing competition had started, and what better way to prove how utterly fucking unassuming he was by spending a few hours fishing? Not that he'd ever done it before, but it shouldn't be that hard. He grabbed a rental kit — complete with rod, bait, and tackle — and wandered over to the pier. Other contestants had taken all of the boats already, so he had to content himself with fishing dockside.[break][break]

As he walked the length of the pier, he recognized the familiar face of Xiura Balfaltin, though she was seated next to a girl with pink hair Bishop did not know.[break][break]

But not knowing a person had never stopped him before.[break][break]

He strode up behind the seated girls and dropped into a crouch between them. "Boo," he said without warning. Grinning, he stood up again and walked around their large picnic blanket to face them properly. "Hey, Xiura. Didn't recognize you at first, girl. It's Ramsey, remember?"[break][break]

On the night they'd met, after wiping the cop's memories and letting him go, they walked back into downtown Lilycove together before parting ways. Bishop had told her he intended on getting an alter ego forged through Rocket, but not what it would be yet. He'd had no idea at the time. It was essential that she know it now before accidentally outing his true identity in front of a stranger.[break][break]

Bishop cast his line, mimicking what he'd seen others do on the pier, and turned back to the girls. "Who's your friend?" he asked, turning his wolfish grin upon Naomi Sato.[break][break]

But before he could get an answer, the fishing rod in his hands tensed. Something had already bitten the hook![break][break]

The wild Horsea thrashed as Nomi attempted to remove him from the end of her fishing rod. Valerian cracked a single baby blue eye, but didn't seem very interested in the water Pokémon, and soon continued on with his nap. Nomi replace the bait on the end of her fishing line and tossed it back into the ocean, then deposited the Horsea next to her things. It gurgled in an irritated fashion. "Well, maybe you shouldn't have bitten down so hard on my bait if you didn't want to get caught!" She scolded him, but then tossed him a strawberry from her sandwich to make up for his trauma. It was then that she realized a man was addressing her.[break][break]
"Oh! Hello! I'm Nomi. Are you a...friend of Xiura's?" Nomi cocked her head cutely, pink ponytail swishing as she observed the newcomer. He was a burly man who seemed better suited for brawling than fishing. It was almost comical, the way he towered over the much smaller young ladies and awkwardly prepared his rented fishing equipment. However, when he caught a - rather small, admittedly - Octillery right away, Nomi was envious of his beginner's luck. It had been at least a half hour before Xiura and Nomi had caught anything, and they owned their own rods (despite their own lack of experience).[break][break]
"You must be a lucky guy, Ramsey!" Nomi smiled. "I hope some of it rubs off on us."[break][break]
As if granting her wish, Nomi's fishing rod began to vibrate again as something else latched onto it. With a surprised yelp, she attempted to reel in her next catch.[break][break]

"Yeah, you could say that," Bishop said with an enigmatic shrug of his shoulder. He released the small Octillery back into the water and cast his line again.[break][break]

Nomi's wordless exclamation drew his attention back to her. The grin on his face widened as he watched her struggle with her catch, finally bringing another Octillery to the surface. This one, though, was enormous. He laughed at the sheer size of it.[break][break]

"Sure as hell I'm lucky." Perhaps he hadn't needed to say it, but Bishop was an arrogant bastard on his best days.[break][break]

As if to emphasize his point, his fishing rod bent as the line went taut.[break][break]

"Of course!" Xiura confirmed, grinning at Bishop.

And of course she remembered he would eventually be assigned an alias. Pseudonyms were a common part of the trade when it came to her mother's traditional teahouse for Rocket-oriented transactions. A single slip of the tongue could get it cut out.

She took an idle bite of her kiwi, blueberry, and whipped cream sandwich.

"Great catch!" she exclaimed of the colossal Octillery her friend caught.

Then another bite occurred, but at her lure!

"Ramsey, let's see how much of your luck rubs off on this one," she grunted with effort even as she teased the other Rocket, reeling in her catch.

It would be accurate to say that Nomi was struggling to haul the absolutely massive Octillery she'd caught onto the pier. "This has got to be the - " she huffed, face turning red with exertion " - largest Octillery I've ever seen!" Unable to hold on any longer, she let the gigantic Pokémon fall back into the ocean with a splash so big it soaked through most of the bottom half of Nomi's outfit (good thing she was wearing a bikini underneath!).[break][break]
"Oh no, my sandwich!" Nomi lamented with a sigh. It was also completely drenched. Soggy bread was no good, so Nomi discarded it into the waves; maybe the giant Octillery would be able to enjoy it if Nomi couldn't. "Ramsey brought us too much luck it seems," she complained, but smiled when Xiura handed her a new fruit and cream sandwich. She took several quick bites before turning back to her fishing rod. She was somewhat surprised to find all of her fishing equipment still in tact after all the commotion.[break][break]
"So what do you do, Ramsey?" She asked her new acquaintance, genuinely curious. "Are you based in Slateport, or just in town for the Splashfest?"[break][break]
Just then, she felt another tug on her fishing line. "Oh gosh, here we go again..."[break][break]

While the two ladies hauled up their catches, Bishop reeled in his own, pulling a regular, normal Gorebyss out of the water. He quickly unhooked the Pokémon and released it, not interested in the pink fish.[break][break]

"I work in Slateport, in one of the art galleries in the Upper District." He avoided mentioning where he lived. The fewer people who knew, the better. "I come down after my shift's over to see what's goin' on at Splashfest."[break][break]

Deciding he also wanted a fruit-and-cream sandwich, he sat down between Xiura and Nomi, squeezing his bulk into the space. He stretched his legs out in front of him to narrow his profile as much as possible. While holding his fishing rod in one hand, he plucked a strawberry sandwich from the tray.[break][break]

"What about you gals? Do anything fun at Splashfest already?"[break][break]

Just as Bishop took a bite of the sandwich, his fishing rod vibrated. With the sandwich between his teeth, he grabbed the rod with both hands and pulled.[break][break]

What the fuck was up with all the Octillery? Bishop nearly lost his own sandwich hauling the massive Pokémon out of the water and then nearly wrestling with it to free it. He managed to hold onto the sandwich, however, and scarfed it down before he cast the hook (with new bait that time) back into the water.[break][break]

"Damn, who made these?" he asked, picking up a second sandwich, this one with orange slices. "They're fuckin' delicious."[break][break]

He was halfway through that snack when his line went taut again.[break][break]

Finally, a fish that wasn't a damn Octillery. The Basculin was a much more interesting catch, on the other hand. Bishop hadn't seen one live before, only pictures. Despite its novelty, he decided to let it go.[break][break]

He finished his second sandwich before casting his line again. Mere moments passed before another bite pulled on the rod.[break][break]

"Oh gosh, Ramsey, that one's so pretty!" Nomi exclaimed, as Ramsey reeled in a sparkling yellow-colored Wishiwashi while Nomi released her own small Basculin back into the water. The man had squeezed himself in-between the two girls, and Nomi couldn't help but notice the rugged, handsome lines of his jaw and the rather well-defined muscles in his arms, and blushed a little. He works for an art gallery? she marveled, trying to imagine him in a fancier setting than fishing on an ocean pier in casual clothing. It wasn't exactly easy, which made her giggle a little. She wondered which art gallery it was - not that Nomi herself was an expert of Slateport's Upper District, or anything.[break][break]
"Xiura made the sandwiches," Nomi replied to his inquiry, voice filled with pride as she beamed at her friend. "She is the BEST at making delicious snacks! She runs a lovely little boba café, as you probably know." Nomi finished her own sandwich then, and returned both hands to her fishing rod in case another gigantic Pokémon decided to bite.[break][break]
"As for Splashfest, well, I've gone diving a few times. I cheered for Xiura at the swimsuit contest, she looked amazing! I also dunked my friend @marshall at the dunk tank, it was hilarious. He also helped me collect a bunch of Sharpedo teeth on the beach. It's been nice, enjoying the end of the summer with friends. I'm not the best with crowds, though, so the bigger events can sometimes feel exhausting."[break][break]
Ah! Another tug on her fishing pole. Nomi steadied herself, ready for whatever was about to break the surface.[break][break]

The shiny Wishiwashi was interesting, though Bishop wasn't sure if the piss yellow thing could be considered pretty. Still, rare was rare. He'd keep it if nothing else stood out to him.[break][break]

"Xiura, I'm coming by your café someday for more of these sandwiches. You sellin' them? I'll buy your whole stock," Bishop joked, though he refrained from picking up a third. They were rather filling despite being so light, and he didn't want to spoil his appetite for dinner.[break][break]

As Nomi rattled off the list of everything she did during Splashfest, Bishop listened with one ear. The names and activities she mentioned were meaningless to him. She might as well have been reading the ingredients list off the back of a shampoo bottle.[break][break]

"Sounds fun," he said when she stopped talking. His fishing pole was bending, and he pulled hard to haul in the next catch, whatever it was.[break][break]

Xiura shook her head as she tossed back the small Octillery that seemed hell-bent on being caught again. This wasn't what she meant by Bishop's luck rubbing off on their fishing trip!

Casting her line again, she flashed a quick but sincere smile at Nomi's kind words and answered Bishop's question. "Ah, yes, I make them for the shop. I make a fresh batch every day, but usually just one kind of fruit at a time." She felt a particularly violent pull at her lure, so she gritted her teeth and leaned back to pull in her catch.

Nomi helped the Lumineon she had recently caught detangle itself from her fishing rod, and then, unable to hold back her curiosity any longer, Nomi turned to Ramsey and asked, "So what kind of art gallery do you work for, anyway? Is it like, a private gallery, or more like a public museum?" She reached over for another sandwich, this time selecting raspberries and cream. As she ate and waited for Ramsey to answer, she glanced over at Valerian, who had moved to a new spot on the beach where there was more direct sunlight. Some clouds had blown in from the east, it seemed, and Nomi couldn't help but shake her head in amusement at her companion's dedication to seeking out the warmest possible place to nap. I guess I'll have to catch the largest water Pokémon ever for him to finally notice, She mused.[break][break]
Speaking of, her fishing rod began to shake violently, and she set her newest sandwich down to begin reeling in her newest catch. "This really is a crowded area!" She exclaimed.[break][break]

Bishop was barely paying attention to the girls. Whatever was on the other end of his line was putting up the biggest fight he ever imagined from a fish. He could no longer sit, even; he quickly scrambled to his feet and squared off against the mysterious beast with a wide stance. Using the strength of his entire body, he pulled the rod backward with one hand as his other rapidly reeled in the line.[break][break]

The reason for such a difficult fight became evident when the Pokémon finally emerged from the water. A massive Huntail, larger than anything Bishop had ever seen before, was snagged on his hook. His jaw fell open at the sight of it.[break][break]

And then he broke out into the biggest grin and laughed.[break][break]

"HOLY SHIT!" he shouted, not at all disturbed by the angry scowl on the Huntail's face as it loomed over him. "Look at that, girls! By Arceus, it's a monster! Hey, take a pic for me, will ya?"[break][break]

He handed one of them his phone and posed with his fishing rod and catch. Once the photo was taken, he released the Huntail from the hook and took his phone back.[break][break]

"Damn, what a day!" Bishop crowed as he sat back down on the blanket between Xiura and Nomi. "Betcha didn't expect that to happen, huh?"[break][break]

As calm settled back onto the pier, he cast his line out again and picked up another sandwich to eat. He deserved a damn reward for that haul. "Oh, uh, the art gallery I work at?" he repeated Nomi's question, still somewhat distracted by what had just occurred. "It's a private gallery owned by one Seraphine d'Aureville. She's really good. You should check it out sometime."[break][break]

Bishop's job wasn't marketing, but he figured young women like his two companions might be interested in that kind of thing.[break][break]
