"Overcommitting can be a risky idea, especially with the numbers game still in my favor. You might find yourself down three Pokemon instead of one. But Mega Evolution isn't a marathon, it's a sprint. And if I only have three chances to knock your Haunter out of the sky, you want those chances to be as hard as can be."[break][break]

Smog rolled out, and Earth Power put Isaac's team on notice. What would normally be a fairly obvious move was now a guessing game as the smog obscured the glowing energies of the earth. Not even wanting to chance the pain, Kiryu shot into the air in a Magnet Rise. Ivan followed suit with a Copycat, both of them dodging the worst of the move with the power of levitation. Unfortunately, while unharmed, it also meant they were useless for this round of combat.[break][break]

Charles and Knuckles were rocked by the attack, the two hunkering down to try and minimize the amount of pain they'd face. However, as they flinched near each other, they turned to each other and nodded. The eerie purple flame gathered around Charles' horn once more, intensifying into what looked like a miniature sun before launching towards Haunter in a brilliant plume. It was large. It was flashy. It was the perfect cover for Knuckles, who vaulted off of Charles' back and charged through the flames to try and deck Haunter with a Bullet Punch.[break][break]

As they marked their target, the levitating Mori and Ringo turned to their remaining foes. Ringo pushed back against the Smog in great sweeping motions, a purple gale forming around his tail. Through his efforts, he tried to simultaneously blow away the smog cloud and pepper the Pallosand with gusts of Ominous Wind. All the while, Mori took a more direct approach, a hand glowing an eerie red as she lunged towards Houndoom. On contact, she'd eat at his essence with a powerful Leech Life.[break][break]

All the while, Isaac watched, more and more intrigued by the moment. Not only would his team get the chance to practice some much needed teamwork, but Johanna was surpassing each and every expectation he had in this little training drill. What started as a by the numbers exercise was turning into the start of something beautiful. There was potential here, and by Arceus was Isaac gonna bring it to bear!

A lot of things were happening all at once. What had previously been one battlefield was now three battlefields she had to account for all at once. Her hands began to shake a clear sign of the coming decision paralysis. Where did she look, did she command the Houndour, Pallosand or was it perhaps Haunter that vaunted her attention?

By the time she finally worked through the nerves Isaac’s Pokémon were already well on their way to perform their own actions. She had to make a decision. The weakest link here was Houndour.

“Retnauh, Hughleikr deal with them as you see fit.” She turned her attention to the Houndour. “Anna let’s do this."

The Houndour perked its ears ready for a command. At this time the Smog was blown away by an OMINOUS WIND revealing the Duskull trying to get close. “Counterattack.” Was Johanna’s sole command. And the Houndour jumped into action charging at the Duskull dark-type energies coating its head as it went in for a headbutting FEINT ATTACK, though in the process it felt the scratches of the Leech life, alas pain had never halted this Houndour.

Meanwhile, Pallosand tried to dodge the OMINOUS WIND by making itself as thin as possible against the ground. It felt the eerie air caressing its sand, trying to tug at its shovel. It was painful, but Pallosand managed to live through it. And as it reformed back into its sandcastle form an orb of powerful ghost energies formed at what was supposedly its mouth. Though it did not stay there long as it was fired toward the Chimecho as a SHADOW BALL.

Lastly the Main attraction. The powerful fiery forced Haunter to dodge. Only to be met with Lucario’s Bullet punch. At first, he thought himself safe, surely a fighting-type move would not hurt him. But then the pain set in as Bone met with Haunter’s face.

The ghost howled in pain and anger. HOW DARED THIS LUCARIO! Purple energy emerged from the Haunter shooting directly back at Lucario as PAYBACK for all the pain it had just caused.

[attr="class","skullbody"]"The bigger the battlefield is, the more there is to keep track of at once," Isaac said as he watched the approaching storm. "Don't worry about focusing on it all. Pokemon are living, breathing creatures, and capable of a lot more than you might think. Train them well, and you can focus on the big picture while they fill in the little details for you." Some saw Pokemon as bullets in a gun they were holding. To Isaac, they were the players and he was the coach. The more berth he gave them to do their thing, the better.[break][break]

And sure enough, they wouldn't disappoint. They took their lumps, of course. In the air, Knuckles could do nothing to defend himself from Haunter's outburst, the Riolu getting slapped down into the sands by a burst of Payback. Mori, too, was helpless to avoid Houndour's reprisal, the shadowy dog leaning into her Leech Life to ensure her own would hit where it hurt. Only Ringo managed to keep up, the Chimecho flying up to try and dodge the Shadow Ball hurtling her way. While she avoided the worst of it, the glancing blow singed her tail.[break][break]

Three strikes, three hits. Were the sides even, that would give time for Johanna's team to regroup. But this was part of why Isaac had three of his Pokemon out in the first place. As soon as the first wave licked their wounds, the second wave launched into action.[break][break]

As Haunter was distracted by his wrath, Ivan zoomed behind him, the Magnet Rise letting him quickly and quietly hover into position. Once more, he decided to fall back on Copycat strategies, spitting a Shadow Ball just like Pallosand's right at the Haunter's back. She wouldn't be the only one marking the Haunter; Charles would also join him, waiting to see if the Haunter would dodge or stumble. He tossed his head not at where Haunter was, but instead in the direction Haunter would move, hoping to intercept him with a Psycho Cut.

While two of the active crew went after Haunter, Kiryu decided to occupy the other two's attentions. She pounded the ground with a heavy fist, sending the fissures of an Earthquake rippling towards the Houndour and Pallosand. If they wanted to stop Ivan and Charles, they were going to have to deal with her, first![break][break]

They wouldn't be the only ones squaring up. Knuckles was the first of the injured team to snap back into action, popping herself off of the ground and scanning the battlefield for opponents. Conviction and determination glowed a stoic grey around her hands; pooling this flickering aura around her, she aimed an Aura Sphere right towards the Houndour.[break][break]

Seeing Knuckles switching targets, Mori decided to return the favor. She gathered a Shadow Ball of her own between her hands, flinging it right at the Pallosand. It would be a tricky target for sure, capable of smooshing itself against the ground to avoid most attacks. However, that was where Ringo came in. The Chimecho's eyes locked on the Pallosand's as he activated his Entrainment. If the Pallosand tried to smoosh against the ground again, he would find an unexpected boon making that all the harder; he could float now! Would he figure out how to get a handle on it, or would this blessing be a curse in the face of Mori's Shadow Ball?[break][break]

The words Isaac spoke sounded familiar to her, though the topic was different the meaning was the same. Yes, she had definitely heard those words used before though in the context of managing people rather than Pokémon. But that factoid did little good now.

The first team shifted with the second. While they had time to recuperate, Johanna’s team would struggle to keep up. Overwhelmed by numbers.

Haunter was the first to be targeted. A Copied Shadow Ball tried to hit him from behind, but intuition warned him. He managed to dodge in time or so he thought. While he managed to dodge the sphere of ghastly energy, a powerful Psycho Cut hit him from behind. Pain grimaced across his face.

The Haunter turned to the Galarian Rapidash. It had to deal with that, it couldn’t handle two at once. Its eyes glowed red, bright, and shining. No trickery or subterfuge. The Hypnosis of before was but an inkling of the full power that now rained down upon Charles if they did not find some way to avoid it, and at this intensity and this focus merely closing one’s eyes would not be enough to dodge the mental suggestions Haunter was launching, for they would hammer upon the walls of the mind even if their gaze did not meet.

Meanwhile, the Aggron occupied the Pallosand and Houndour with an Earthquake. The Pallosand reacted quickly, extending its sand underneath the fiery canine, raising it from the shaking ground as it created sturdy terrain with its own body. Pain hammered through the Pallosand as the Earthquake washed over it.

Johanna was by now stunned. What do I do?

Well, while she was trying to fight her way through the chains of information. Pallosand felt its body raised from the ground. It could no longer hug the sand. For a moment it felt fear, then it accepted its fate. It saw how a Shadow Ball flew towards it, and though it would try to dodge, it knew it would result in failure. And so it raised the Houndour up higher, protecting it from the oncoming Aura Sphere.

The Houndour wobbled as the shaky sand beneath her feet carried her higher putting her in safety, and giving her the high ground against the Metallic monster who was surely able to deal with the whole lot of them. Sparks flew in her mouth for a brief moment as she launched a FIRE SPIN column toward the metallic beast. But the flames were not eternal, for its mouth closed as the sand beneath her feet disappeared. Luckily, it was rather adept at landing on its feet.

Pallosand was swerving in and out of consciousness barely able to keep its form. Though with what little consciousness it had left, it sent a beam of red GIGA DRAIN energy towards the Duskull that had hit it. Hoping to keep itself in the fight.

TLDR:
- Haunter is hit by PSYCHO CUT and responds with FULL power Hypnosis
- Pallosand takes the EARTHQUAKE but saves Houndour from it.
- Houndour uses FIRE SPIN aimed at Aggron
- Pallosand is hit by SHADOW BALL but tries to return the favor with GIGA DRAIN

[attr="class","skullbody"]Overwhelmed by numbers as they were, Johanna's team valiantly refused to back down. Her goal was to hold out for three rounds of combat, and by Arceus, she and her team held each other to it. Pallosand in particular was on full bro duty, sacrificing its own ability to hang in the fight in order to protect Houndour from every attack coming its way.[break][break]

Johanna, too, had internalized the purpose of this exercise very well. In a contest of brute strength, her team would come up short every time. But this was a battle of endurance, and the best way to survive was to limit what the other team was capable of. A Hypnosis put Charles right to sleep, and the Fire Spin wreathed around Kiryu held her back from charging into close quarters combat. Just like that, Isaac was down to only four Pokemon that could feasibly chase the Haunter down.[break][break]

Yet those four were as scrappy as they came, and they had a plan. Ivan, ever the opportunist, noticed the Fire Spin being generated by Houndour and decided to take it for his own. The flames he launched with a flick of his tail curved and coiled, aimed not directly at Haunter but instead all around him. Much as the flames held Kiryu back, so, too, did Ivan hope they would keep Haunter's room to dodge limited.[break][break]

Ringo opted for the sacrifice play instead, flying down by Charles' side. He rang the soothing melody of a Heal Bell into Charles' ear, snapping the Rapidash out of his slumber. Groggily shaking his head, he fired off another Psycho Cut in Haunter's general direction, hoping that the wreathed flames would help make up for the lack of aim he put into his hasty shot.[break][break]

The Houndour was still fresh from the fight, but two could play at her tactics. Kiryu punched the ground in front of her feet, causing clouds of dust to form on the ground around Houndour. In but a moment's time, a Rock Tomb shot up from the ground, hoping to hold the healthiest member of Johanna's team back so the remaining team members could get to work.[break][break]

With how much of a beating Mori had taken, a Leech Life would spell her end and easily get Pallosand back into the fight. For this reason, Knuckles intervened, letting the speed of a Bullet Punch propel her into the path of the Pallosand's energy pulse. From there, she waved Mori onward, even as the Riolu grit her teeth and endured the pain of her life being drained away.[break][break]

The Duskull looked at Haunter, looked at herself, and then sighed. Without further ado, she plunged a hand right into her own mask, pulling out a chunk of her soul orb. As she crushed it in her hand, she whispered a Curse against the Haunter; even if he survived the onslaught being fired his way, fate would eventually make him pay up.[break][break]

Would the Curse have what it takes to push Haunter over the edge? Or would Johanna's team defiantly stay up until the end of Round 3? Isaac watched with bated breath, secretly hoping that the Haunter would push through. He just had that little bit further to go![break][break]

The Galarian Rapidash fell to the hypnosis. For a moment Haunter would sigh in relief. Only for flames to shoot out around it, capturing it in a circle. It looked confused, but then its eyes fell upon the Jolteon and it all made sense. Perhaps slightly infuriated that this Jolteon dared steal a technique from its friend and so gathered a Ball of ghastly energy, and fired the SHADOW BALL through the fiery Prison towards the Jolteon. (Having completely forgotten much difficulty he had when he tried to hit it before)

Unfortunately, since its focus was on the Jolteon, it did not see that the Galarian Rapidash had been pulled out of its sleep. And so, it felt the stinging slash of yet another Psycho Cut upon its back. It howled in pain as its vision grew blurry, it began to fall from the air, getting singed by the fire in the process before he could correct his course. But by then it was too late, he landed upon a coarse bed of sand. Barely holding onto what was left of his consciousness. He definitely did not have the strength to fly anymore.

Houndour was caught in the Rock Tomb, and though it tried to jump from rock to rock to ascend the prison it could not do so.

Pallosand felt a surge of energy as the GIGA DRAIN hit and sucked in the energy. With what power it, it quickly saw how the battlefield was evolving, and it didn’t like the look of it one bit. Houndour was caught in a Prison, and so was Haunter. But of the two it knew Haunter would be more important.

Seeing how the Duskull broke off a piece of its soul. Pallosand knew what was up. But perhaps it could still save its ghastly friend. Ignoring everything else it shot through the sand at a sprint almost never seen in the wilds. Breaking through the barrier of fire, feeling its hot caress as it surrounded itself around the Haunter and build itself like a protective Sandcastle as it used SHORE UP.

Unfortunately, the Curse did not care. Duskull’s intent was clear and so the curse passed through the Pallosand and hit the Haunter. The Darkness swallowed the Haunter as it lost consciousness. The Pallosand noticed the fading friend, and yet it kept doing its thing. Perhaps tricking the opponents to think Haunter was still very much a threat.

But Johanna knew the truth. And should Isaac look upon her face he would see the concern on her face, or perhaps he would simply notice how her hands were curling into fists from sheer effort to keep herself from halting the match right there.

She knew the match was lost. But if Pallosand’s bluff paid off they’d have succeeded in holding out for those three turns.

TLDR:
- Haunter fires SHADOW BALL at Jolteon, but gets hit by Psycho Cut.
- Haunter falls to the ground barely consciousness after taking Fire Spin Damage
- Houndour is caught.
- Pallosand gets energy from GIGA DRAIN and goes to protect the Haunter with its body while using SHORE UP hoping to bluff Haunter’s continued presence.
- Haunter is hit by CURSE, Haunter faints.
- Johanna’s Pokerface is bad.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Charles charged over to the Pallosand, lifting its horn as if it were the headsman's axe. With a dismissive snort, he brought it down upon the sand castle and the Haunter that it was harboring. The fight seemed to be over, yet just in case, it was time to seal the deal.[break][break]

Just kidding! Charles' horn stopped short, healing energy flowing from him into the two injured ghosts. While the Haunter was likely too exhausted to keep going, at least the wear and tear from the battle would be eased by a steady stream of Heal Pulses. Pallosand, having survived against all the odds thrown his way, would be rewarded for his bravely with a full round of healing.[break][break]

Seeing this, Kiryu began breaking down the Rock Tomb that had formed around Houndour. She rumbled appreciatively at the hellhound, clearly proud of how it and Pallosand were able to run circles around her companions. Ringo jingled cheerfully, Mori flashed a thumbs up before passing out, and even Knuckles spared a quiet nod of acknowledgment toward her valiant foes. The only sore loser on deck was Ivan, who was still tumbling frictionlessly through the air from the Shadow Ball that unexpectedly tagged him.[break][break]

Perhaps Johanna would be confused why her team was being celebrated. From her white-knuckled grip to her brow-knit worry, the girl looked to be lost in thought. Yet Isaac turned away from the battle, looking out across the isle of Mossdeep City. "You just spent a Mega Evolution's duration keeping an entire team busy," he said. "Look out there. There were dozens of other places on the island where I could've been. But with your Shadow Tag up, I had no choice. And even with the odds against you, you kept in charge the whole time."[break][break]

He turned his head slightly, looking back towards Pallosand. "Don't think I don't see that gambit. And you picked the perfect time for it," Isaac admitted. "If Haunter's still up, and I don't check, I'm leaving myself wide open. If I do stick around and check, then I may as well still be Shadow Tagged. Either way, any move's a gamble."[break][break]

A small smirk spread across Isaac's face. "I say we leave it a mystery. More fun that way, don't you think?"

Pallosand was prepared. Its resolve steeled as it watched the axe of a second death being brought down. It didn’t even close its eyes as it greeted death with open eyes, or so it would have. But the axe never reached him, instead, both ghosts were bathed in a steady stream of Heal pulses. While the Haunter was already out cold by then, the Pallosand appreciated the gesture and even thanked the Galarian Rapidash for it.

Meanwhile, the Houndour kept trying to pounce over the rocks and failing to do so until the Aggron tore down its rocky prison. And though all the Aggron did was rumble appreciatively alongside the jingle from Ringo, Houndour had time for neither gesture. All its thoughts were on Johanna. It rushed over to her as if it had been able to sense her emotional distress.

Yes, she was confused. They had lost. Why were they celebrating? The tension that had found her before did not wish to let go. So accustomed to being a disappointment was she that even though she was TRYING not to think and behave like that, it still happened. But then Johanna found the warm snout of her Houndour against her curled fist. And suddenly the tension was gone. She allowed her hand to pat the valiant canine Pokémon. A smile spread on her lips.

Oh right… She remembered the objective of this battle. A flush spread over her cheeks as Isaac complemented her performance. If only he had been able to see into her mind he would know she was far from in charge. But perhaps that didn’t matter? The thought crossed her mind. As long as she had seemed like she was in charge, didn’t that mean she had actually been in charge?

She would have to mull it over some more. For now, she took Isaacs’s explanation and more importantly praise and stored it all in what would be one of her Team Rocket Core Memories. “I guess you are right… I suppose my Pokémon did do pretty well.” The Houndour demanded more pets from Johanna and would continue to do.

It Formed a smile out of its sand it sends its best impression of a sandy thumbs-up toward Isaac. It then, with Haunter covered in its sand slithered against the beach over to Johanna and snagged Haunter’s Pokéball, retrieving the ghastly ghost from inside it keeping Johanna in the dark about Haunter’s state of consciousness.

That was future talk. For now, he was content just being the mysterious helping hand. He flashed the sand-thumb a thumbs up of his own, then whistled for his team to fall back to him. Knuckles was the first to zoom over, narrowly beating the sulky Ivan to her trainer's side. Charles trotted up right behind them, tossing any last dust and exertion out from his mane. Ringo carried Mori over, softly tut tutting at the Duskull's self-sacrificial gambit. Finally, Kiryu brought up the rear, making sure all of the others were alright first.[break][brak]

"But, for now, I think we've really covered everything. Shit, if anything, you snuck a few extra lessons out of me there!" Isaac laughed a little, returning Mori and Kiryu to their balls and slipping onto Charles' back. "Catch you later," he added, flashing Johanna a quick smile and wave before riding off into the sunset.[break][break]

It took until Rocket for Isaac to find himself. Maybe, just maybe, he'd be able to pass that favor on to others.

Johanna felt the heat in her cheeks announce the increasing flush. Had she not known better she might think a fever had struck her by Isaac’s words.

I do need to trust myself more. She agreed with Isaac, but she did not voice it. It was still hard to admit verbally. She appreciated his words all the same as things began to simmer down. Their training had come to an end.

“Yeah, I think we did.” She replied with a smile. She watched as he mounted the Galarian Rapidash and gave him a wave as well. “Catch you later” The farewell was quick as Isaac rode into the sunset, perhaps never to be heard from again.

Nah, she had a feeling their paths would cross again.
