Matt adjusted the saddle on Nana's back. Once he was sure it was on correctly, he climbed into the saddle. Petting her mane softly. "You're doing great getting used to this. We're gonna work on speed today, okay?" Nana nodded her head with a snort. Going to walk towards the starting area Matt had shown her earlier. Off to the side, his Poochyena and Rockruff stood watching. Wanting to show them that this might be their future of racing!

Well maybe not Kazzy. Depends on what he evolved into.. Matt was leaving it up to the pup. Not wanting to influence what the pup wanted. Though Matt himself would love to ride with him, if he did not want to, that was fine. The poochyena seemed to be drinking all this up, watching with wide eyes at the fantastic arcanine in front of her.

Taking a deep breath, Matt held onto Nana. "Okay, let's do this. We'll work up to an Extreme Speed around the area, okay? Only when I signal."

Clicking his tongue, the two took off in a trot. Going around the area before Matt kicked the speed up. They raced in a blinding fashion back to their starting point, slowing to turn around. Matt took a deep breath and dug his fingers into Nana. "Okay Nana, a short extreme speed. To the end and back, alright?" Nana nodded, her feet started to glow- and they were off.

The wind didn't sting Matt's eyes this time, because he had on a pair of goggles, but the wind still bite his skin. Hair whipped far back, as Nana raced over the bridge. It was a simple straight line- until they got to the end and Nana stumbled. It caused Matt to lose his grip, making him flail and then get slung off the back of her and into the water below. Luckily it was the water he hit.

It stung like fuck but it was apart of learning. Though it didn't stop the man from cursing a storm below. "God dammit." He growled, looking up. He wasn't going to let Josh scold him again. Looking up he saw Kazzy and teh Poochyena whining and pawing at the air towards him. "I'm fine... fuckin' fine."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Normally, when Isaac had just wrapped up a mission, he was able to follow a fairly standard operating procedure. Step 1, hop on the nearest motorcycle. Step 2, drive off into the sunset while flipping off the law. Step 3, get to the sub and get those mission clothes off. It was summer. It was hot in these damn things! The quicker he could ditch them, the better.[break][break]

It was a good routine. It was a peaceful routine. There was just one problem with it. Orion Lykos killed his fucking bike.[break][break]

Now Isaac had to hoof it like a normal person. What an indignity! Couldn't life remember that he had things to do and places to be? Finding a safehouse in the middle of a hot city was always a risk, and he wasn't about to get buck naked in the middle of the woods. This meant he wouldn't be able to shed his guise until he had at least set up camp for the night. The triumphant rides from missions passed were replaced with sneaking and skulking through some of the tallest, itchiest grass in the region. Truly, after pulling this stunt, nobody in the Hoenn region better qualified to be his nemesis.[break][break]

Wait, hold on, was that his other nemesis?[break][break]

Isaac peeked his head out from the grass, watching as Matt and his Arcanine spread into a black and red blur. Extremespeed, huh? Ah, good times, good times. And judging by how the blur suddenly stumbled to a stop, Matt was going to meet the same fate he had. Sure, he wasn't going to plummet from the sky like a rock, but he was sent hurtling through the air in a beautiful fashion. Damn, now Isaac was kinda wishing he could catch that on camera.[break][break]

Okay, okay. He got the snickers out of his system. He slipped out from the grass, heading over to the surface of the water to help the fallen man up. Sure, their relationship was . . . contentious. But, hey. As one of the few people alive who had experience going for a ride at that level of speed, maybe his insight could pay off some. "Sure you are," he said, offering his hand. "Now, c'mon. Let's get you outta there before you turn into a lily pad or some shit."

If this moment could have gotten any worse, Matt would have drown himself- wait. Did it just get worse?

It fucking did.

Oh no.

No no no no NO.

"Do you just follow me around like a lost pup?" He shot at Isaac, begrudgingly taking his hand and getting pulled up. There was a pause of time where Matt did really consider shoving the man in the water below. Staring very intensely at it- he really, really- but then Demuu came up and barked at Isaac. Excuse, he was in the way of her trainer.

Matt snapped out of it, huffing and going back towards Nana. Looking her over to make sure she was okay. The fire type huffed back at him, checking him over as well. "We have to get this done.." He muttered to himself, rubbing his eyes. A sour look was passed back to Isaac, then looking back. Scrunching his face up.

"... That's Demuu." At least it was, an attempt of conversation.

"Nah, s'more like . . . y'know when you hear a song on the radio, and now that you recognize it it starts popping up everywhere? Whether you want it to or not?"[break][break]

"Yeah. That's you. You're Funkytown."[break][break]

Okay. Maybe that was a little harsh. But the last thing Isaac needed when he was already dealing with this bike shit was to be called a lost pup by the dog guy. That was just embarrassing! Nevertheless, he took a little breath, winding himself down as the man's newest Pokemon came his way. Surprise, surprise; another cute little pup.[break][break]

"Hey," he said, voice soft and gentle as he looked down towards the Poochyena. They were a lot more approachable looking than their fully evolved kin. "S'nice to meet you, too."[break][break]

Thinking, Isaac let two of his own Pokeballs hit the ground. Out of one came Isaac's Riolu, who took one whiff of the aura here before shooting Isaac a baffled look. Out of the other came a Hisuian Growlithe, who took one look at the people and Pokemon gathered here and began excitedly barking. "Knuckles, Caesar, say hi," Isaac said, Caesar doing so far more eagerly and cheerfully than Knuckles did.[break][break]

"So. Extremespeed, huh?"

Matt look down right offended to be called Funkytown. "And you're about as bad as Krabbys." Now that was a more perverted joke than he might have meant, but he didn't care. Sighing and rubbing his eyes, looking at Nana who looked upset she threw him off again. Scratching her nose softly. "It's okay." He told her.

Looking back, Demuu was still barking- until she saw the new pokemon. Her eyes went wide, dashing behind Kazzy to hide. Kazzy, however, it was the end of the world.

THe dog barked the loudest he ever sounded, going to run excitedly around the other two pokemon. Tail wagging a white blur as he bounced around them. Going into play position, then running away, to come back. Play! Play! Play!

"Now look what you've done, he's not gonna stop until all the energy is ran out." There was no malice in his voice, he found it kinda cute for Kazzy to make some friends.

"Yeah.. Extreme Speed." He swore if Isaac said he knew how to handle this he was throwing him into the water.

[attr="class","skullbody"]At the mention of being as bad as Krabbys, a sympathetic look spread on Isaac's face. "Oh, shit, man. Sorry you know how that feels," he said. "But, hey. Brave of you to be so upfront about it. Don't worry, I'm not gonna tell anyone, okay?" Parry, meet riposte.[break][break]

Knuckles cringed away from both the sudden rush of excitement flooding the area and the inevitable expectation that she would be dragged into more socializing. She spent way too much of her life dealing with having nobody to handle suddenly having so many of them around![break][break]

Luckily for her, Caesar found Kazzy's excitability much more his speed. The mop-haired Growlithe barked almost as loud as his fellow rock dog did, practically hopping back and forth from how amped up he was. When Kazzy retreated, he eagerly gave chase, only to retreat himself whenever Kazzy looked ready to chase.[break][break]

"Oh no, how terrible," Isaac joked, watching the two run around with a gentle smile on his face. "There's just something about seeing them play without a care in the world, y'know? Makes it feel like everything's gonna turn out alright. Even here in Hoenn."[break][break]

Besides, while the kids played, they could talk business. "Y'know, at least you're trying it out on the ground," Isaac said. "It's even more intense in the air. Sure learned that one the hard way. You and yours giving it a few practice runs?"[break][break]

Sure, Isaac's experience with Extremespeed boiled down to almost becoming a high-altitude pancake. But when has that ever stopped him from indulging in his curiosities and trying to lend a helping hand?

Okay, he was going to toss him completely into the water. In fact, he was on his way to toss him just like how Maui tosses Moana without a care- only to pause as he sees how happy Kazzy is. Dropping his hands to his pockets, he watched him zoom around. Chuckling and shaking his head.

"Hope he never loses that playfulness, even when he evolves."

Sighing and running a hand through his dreads, he went back to Nana. Adjusting her saddle, making sure to add some foot straps, might keep him from being flung off. Then Isaac said he did this in the air. Snapping his head back. Okay, he even knew this? Now he was just down right pissy. Did he just do everything he did!? Or... or was he copying Isaac- that was a even worse thought.

"....Yeah. Planning on racing Nana against a gym. Nico does too."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac couldn't help but join Matt in chuckling. There was something about the way he went from tense and hostile to surprisingly relaxed when his Pokemon were involved. It wasn't just about the fact that he cared. Plenty of people cared about their Pokemon, but let that care end there. They could still be petty and selfish, make a point of hurting others, or hold a hell of a grudge. And they could do it in the same breath that they expressed their care.[break][break]

Matt was different. The Matt who fought and the Matt who cared felt completely different. One minute, he could be threatening to throttle Isaac. The next, he'd be diving into a Fighting type's arms to protect him. Even now, their conflict had almost diffused itself, the two standing side by side as they warmly watched their Pokemon play. Why was Matt so quick to anger, when he didn't even seem to genuinely mean it?[break][break]

He was a mystery, and one Isaac was admittedly a little curious about. But for now, that dissection could wait. "Long as you keep giving him reason to be playful, I bet he will be," Isaac said. You were only as old as you felt. Even for Pokemon, that was the case. Sure, Hoenn was a region fraught with adventure, and responsibility, and danger. But with every trouble, there was also something worth fighting for. And in that fight, in that hope, a different kind of innocence had a way of crystalizing.[break][break]

Matt was a fighter. Isaac knew Kazzy was in good hands.[break][break]

And Matt would be in Josh Devlin's. Yeah, sure, there were plenty of gym leaders in this big, crazy region of theirs. But come on. You say the racing gym leader, there was one name that came to mind. How ironic, that his nemesis - ugh, no, that title just felt Wrong now that Isaac had met Orion - knew his close friend - damnit, again, this title felt Wrong, with what Isaac was planning. The social webs he weaved were starting to get too complicated for his own good.[break][break]

Not a lick of his wandering mind showed on his face. Instead, he simply looked to the horizon, tracing out a path with his eyes. "I've always been more about motorcycles than Pokemon myself, when it comes to rides," he admitted. "Love my team, but they're either the slow and steady or quick and weedy type. Not the best for that kinda deal."[break][break]

He paused, eyes tracing along the route that Matt had been running. "Can I see?"

Matt really hoped so. Even if Kazzy's over the top energy was too much sometimes, he still adored it. Along with Nico, he knew his future to be husband wouldn't change Kazzy for the world. Smiling at the thought, he was brought back as Isaac started speaking. A motorcycle might be a better option than Nana, but he wasn't sure.

At being asked to see, Matt turned to stare at him. Did he not see him fail miserably? But he did want to prove he could do this. Looking at Nana, he scratched under her chin. "Wanna give it another go?" He asked, she looked at him, firmly nodding. "Aight then." Heaving himself up into her saddle, he motioned her around to the correct spot. "Demuu, herd Kazzy and the other pup away."

Demuu barked, going to herd the growlithe and rockruff into spots they couldn't get hurt from. Matt was now squinting at the growlithe. "The hell is wrong with your dog??" Matt asked, flabbergasted, but he shook his head. "Alright Nana, you know the deal."

The two would start off in a gentle run, before turning and Nana hunkered down. Feet went aglow and the two went dashing across the bridge again. The blur of them as they rushed by, the speed of the wind could knock everyone back if they weren't prepared to deal with it. But they were gone, the two see sliding to a drastic stop over the bridge. Matt clinging to Nana for dear life, white knuckled... Well he didn't fall off this time. But he sure felt jolted.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac blinked a few times. Okay, good. So he wasn't the only one confused about his weird dog. "Shit. You're the dog guy. I was kinda hoping you'd know," Isaac admitted. "I tried fixing up the poor thing's hair, but it keeps snapping back into place. And not even hedge clippers could trim it. Believe me, I tried. He's a little on the heavy side, too. But not, like. Chunky. More . . . solid. Like he's all muscle."[break][break]

It was weird. But at the very least, the little guy seemed as happy as a clam. He happily leaped away as Demuu herded him around, before sitting as still as a statue and turning to the prepared track. Despite his hair looking matted over his eyes, he seemed completely aware of his surroundings. How strange.[break][break]

In contrast, Knuckles found herself keeping closer to Isaac. Of all the presences here, his was the most familiar and least disagreeable to her. She joined him on standing at the sidelines, seemingly in a deep state of focus. It wasn't as outwordly close of a bond as Isaac had with some of his other Pokemon, but considering how tense and hostile she was upon first joining the team? This comfortable distance was a sign of substantial growth.[break][break]

Seeing Extremespeed on the ground was way different from experiencing it in the air. Honestly, if anything, Isaac probably had it easier. A Dragonair undulating through the air was one thing, but there was no way Matt wasn't feeling every individual footfall and bump in the road. The Arcanine practically defied friction, and the hot air it was displacing may as well have been shimmering. Even the slide to a halt looked like it could've stung something awful. Just what were Arcanine made of if they could handle this?[break][break]

Ugh. Damnit, he couldn't look that impressed. Not in front of Matt. "Not bad. Not bad at all," he said, doing his best to keep that earlier awe under the surface. "Seems you've got what it takes to pull it off. Bet that's gonna leave both the gym leader and Nico seeing stars. But I'm gonna guess pulling it off once isn't why you're out here, huh?"

Matt held Nana tightly. Feeling his blood pumping, everything was stars, it always was after they finished a good run, after 100 bad ones. Looking towards Isaac, he nodded. Patting Nana gently. "Yeah. Want to beat Josh and I want..." Well, he was a ranger. A glance towards Isaac, it made this awkward. Rolling his eyes, he was just going to leave the next part out.

"Want to beat Josh and be able to use this if a time comes for it. Tired of being drilled about how speed works."

There it was, the slight resentment he was holding. Being scolded like that.. it was kind of new. He cared for his siblings and he was a good kid, but now it seemed everything around him was falling apart. Was this the pressures of being an adult? Did he let his personal life get far to messy for him to comprehend? No! Men don't feel this way. Shaking these thoughts out of his head like a mad dog, he finally laid his eyes onto Isaac a final time.

"Have to protect my family."

Leaving it at that, he looked back to the weird growlithe. Lifting a brow, he hopped off Nana. Going over, he let the pup sniff him, before he would attempt to touch him. Blinking as he felt like... Kazzy. Waving the other dog over, he felt them both. Tilting his head, he rubbed his chin softly. "His fur kind of reminds me of Kazzy's..."

Isaac got the message loud and clear. If he did have any further thoughts on Extremespeed, he sure wasn't saying anything. And why would he? Matt had proven he could do it. Any further drilling wasn't going to help him, especially not while he was fed up with it. If anything, it'd just make improvement harder, stress filling its place without mercy.[break][break]

Instead, as Matt's gaze met his, Isaac simply nodded. In some weird, long-distant way, he got it. Years ago, there was someone he'd do anything to protect. Now, four years removed from all that, he was finally starting to regain those feelings. Even after their absence for four years, he knew how powerful and how important they were. That truth was written all over Matt's . . . well, everything, to the point where Isaac was surprised it took him so long to recognize it.[break][break]

He mulled the question over his head as Matt inspected his Growlithe. "Like . . . Kazzy?" he repeated, confused. "You don't think he's a hybrid of some kind, do you? But I've never heard of species blending that clean before. And it doesn't look much like a Rockruff."[break][break]

There was a pause. And then he spoke once more. "What are they like?"

Matt kept looking the dog over. "No, not like a hybrid... well maybe. He just feels like a rock." A gentle tap to the growltihe's body. "Kazzy's body is naturally hard and dense. Yeah he's fluffy, but if you don't be careful his collar is gonna stab you a few times." Shrugging at that, he let go of Caesar and gave him a few good pats. "A good boy, though." He kind of wanted one that looked like that, was pretty neat.

The last question threw him for a loop. Caught completely off guard. Looking at him with a face. Frowning slowly at that, he wasn't sure if he wanted to answer.. looking off to the side. All he ever did was talk to Nico or JT about it... but JT was gone being with Aki, and Nico... he didn't want to bring him down with his anxiety.

"Well, I got six siblings. They're all a handful." He was rubbing his finger under his nose. "I'm the oldest, helped my parents raise them. So always been the one they go to for help." So he was used to being a provider. "Helped with homework, bullies, you name it. My youngest brother struggles a lot in school. He's super smart, but the class bores him, and it gets him picked on." Matt shook his head. "School learned to nip that in the bud because they are scared of my mom." That made him laugh. "Woman is a tiny spitfire."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Come to think of it, Caesar's fur did feel firm and wiry. It was almost like The Dudes' own wispy hair, although that had a more glassy and sharp feeling to it. Caesar's, on the other hand, was heavier. Rocklike. Huh. What Matt was saying made sense.[break][break]

"If he's like some kinda rock, it sure explains why he hates bath time even more than most fire types," Isaac said. The two had eventually come to an accord about cleanliness, but dear god. Getting to that point was a war. Isaac damn near had to chase the little guy up and down the route to catch him! The resulting routine was very touch and go, requiring a lot of careful scrubbing due to Caesar's aversion to any form of immersion. "Now that I know, I wonder if he might like getting to use some of the polish I keep for my rock and steel types . . ."[break][break]

So Matt was an older brother. That explained everything. And he had a lot more on his hands than Isaac ever had. Six siblings. Seven kids. Wow. Growing up, Isaac had his hands full with just the one. Was it any wonder that Matt was always in defense mode? As soon as one fire was put out, five more potential ones were breaking out elsewhere.[break][break]

He did have one advantage in his corner that Isaac lacked, though; a strong, supportive role model. "Sounds like a hell of a mother," Isaac said, grinning at the idea of a human hurricane barging into school and raising hell because, god damnit, this is her seventh kid how are they still bungling this? "You're lucky you've got her. And all those sibs of yours are lucky to have you, too."[break][break]

It sounded like utter chaos. But it also sounded nice, too. "I get your youngest. School always bored me, too. Though I think my ass is smarter than my head is," Isaac joked. "What kinda stuff does he find fun? If he's got a good outlet for his brain, it might make all that reading, riting, and 'rithmetic junk easier to swallow."
